Gorgetown...in Tower’s absence
« on: February 26, 2020, 10:29:46 PM »
As tower doesn’t seem to be appearing, here’s my stab at a summary like his:

1. Gorgetown...MU was driven, and feasted from the outset.
2. Markus was the stud of the game, for his assists, more than his scoring. Early in the game I wondered if he would get a double double.
3. Koby was off (again), and it was good to see Symir clearly taking advantage of those minutes.
4. Solid start from Theo which impacted G’town’s agressiveness for the whole game,
5.When Cain is good, he is good (and Abel). Tonight he was good.
6. Is Wojo a good coach now that the team had a good shooting night?
7. I’ll be there on Saturday, and couldn’t be more excited!!

I appreciate the pun. Well done. Winning is nice. Three game losing streaks aren't collapses. Markus seems to be unbroken
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Just finished watching. Most important takeaway?  Thought this was one of the best games Markus has played at MU.

He read defense really well all night. Hit open shooters in corners. Rarely took ill-advised 3 point shots, nor did he over-penetrate. Shared ball really well and it opened things up for him in second half.

Repeat this formula and we have a chance to have some success. GTown sucks at this point, but this was one of the best decision-making games I recall from Markus.

Wojo also coached a good game and seemed right on the money with his PT allocation.

I think the team figured that G’town would run out of gas, being so short-handed. And since MU was hitting shots early, everyone knew the extra pass would be worth it, in the short- and long-term. Markus knew his time for points would come later, and it did.

I love watching Cain and Johnson rebound but for different reasons.

Cain gets higher than anyone and catches that ball seemingly before it comes down from bouncing off the rim.

Johnson is tenacious. Fights tough and nail for any ball remotely near him and does it (for the most part) without dumb fouls.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Best eFG% game of the year, best OE game of the year. I think we can play better, but the sharing was excellent. Defensive rebounding was a stopper too.

It was a good win and was needed. GT is not very good and was down players. As others say, let the season play out. Let's see if we can take care of kicking SHs ass.

Biggest thing about Georgetown was we were pounding the ball inside. Jayce was a beast. The way Markus was driving the basket was spectacular.

We are a good outside team but we are better when we get production from the Theo/Jayce combo.

We were also hitting our shots, so Markus had no need to go into God mode.

For those who saw him in his playing days - was the Grasshopper a better jumper than Cain? (I know most will say yes, but I'm constantly impressed when he gets up for a rebound)

It's a great question.  I remember Green when he played, but my memory isn't that good.  Two great leapers, but two completely different guys.  Green was relatively short and very well built.  Cain is long and lean.  Green's jumping was all fury and power.  Cain is a graceful, seemingly effortless leaper.  When Green had a breakaway dunk though, it felt like he shook the building.  As athletic as Cain is, its not the same.  OTOH, they says 90% of rebounds are below the rim, but Cain seems like he grabs the ball before it starts to come down.  Very fun to watch both.

Artie couldn’t shoot outside of a jam and was much quicker in the passing lanes for a steal.  When he had a 2/3rds court burst on a steal, everyone knew the flush was coming.

Great overall game.  One nit... Symir played well but he did not handle the double teams very well at all.  No better than our other primary ball handlers.  I really hope next season he learns to handle double teams.

We lose some key ball handlers after this year and need someone who can handle ball pressure next year.  We really need Torrence next season to be a true point.

Most points scored (93) in Big East play this season should say just about everything.

There's also the best effective field goal percentage (68.3 eFG% per KenPom), best 2-point field goal percentage (69.0 2P%), 2nd most 2-point field goals (20), 2nd most 3-point field goals (14) and most assists (23).

Not to mention the 5th least points allowed (72) during the Big East conference schedule.

Perhaps Marquette's most complete game so far. We'll need to be every bit as good tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for the insights on Artie.  I've talked to him at games a few times over the last 8 years or so. Interesting dude.

Here is a little upset tidbit: The Cloudpiercer Jim Dudley may have had the best vertical.

By the way, word from Tower is that he gave up trolling idiots for Lent, so we won't hear from him until after Easter....
