When do they come out with the lists?

Markus' competition is:

Cassius Winston
Myles Powell
Jordan Nwora
Cole Anthony
Vernon Carey Jr.

Is he leading the race right now?

Cassius Winston in the conversation as well.

The MSU and Oregon losses where missed opportunities for Powell.

Nwora has gotten off to a good start and if Louisville continues to perform well could be a factor

None of these players are ahead of Markus at this point in the season

Crazy what two games can do when you're as explosive as Markus.  Went from a very disapointing start to the season to the likely frontrunner from the NPOY award in 24 hours.  Kid is something else.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

I wouldn’t say disappointing...he was averaging more than 21 points a game before the last two games.   :D

He's #4 on KenPom's POY tracker, I'd say he's at least in the convo at this point

For reference Markus is #1, Nwora is #2, Myles Powell is #7, Cassius Winston is #8.

You need to learn a bit more about college hoops.

While Markus is the leader as of today, I think Anthony is the clear #2. He averages over 20 PPG and is way ahead of Markus on rebounds assists, and steals. He is the best player on a National contender.

I think maybe you should expand your horizons and watch a little more hoops

Cole Anthony and his 39/35/69 stat line is not gonna win any sort of POY honors. Great, he barely averages .4 more assists than TOs. Should hang his hat on that.

Obi Toppin? Devon Dotson? Anthony Cowan? Xavier Simpson?

All guys on current contenders with more efficient stat lines.

I could go away from "national contenders" and do guys like Haliburton as well

Cole Anthony isn't sniffing a POY award if his current numbers stay exactly the same.

Cole Anthony is definitely in the conversation. Cooled off after his electric start, but anyone that averages 20/7/4 for UNC while being in the ACC POY race will be in the discussion.

Anthony Lamb and Obi Toppin are probably the most likely mid-major contenders, but I think their ceiling is probably All-American. If someone like Tyrese Maxey or Vernon Carey gets hot & Kentucky or Duke are the best team, that simple "best player on the best team" argument will be there too.

No doubt, but I also think it is OK to say Markus had been a tad disappointing coming into this tournament.  He was good in the Loyola game and solid against Purdue.  Wisconsin and Robert Morris were ugly (8-27 shooting; 8 turnovers to 5 assists).

He obviously erased that in a hurry.  Please don't misconstrue my comments as being negative towards Markus - we are incredibly blessed to have him on our team - but he wasn't going to be on anyone's early POY leaderboards from the first 4 games (yes, very small sample).
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Know Brew mentioned him, but I'd throw Carey from Duke in the top handful of guys. Best player on the floor in that game against Mich St last week.

Without reading the list, anyone who ends up as potentially the "best player from the best team" would be at least a candidate. Carey, Maxey, and Anthony are all the types that could earn a mention if they have the requisite team success (though not looking great at the moment for UNC).

I finally got around to reading the Marquette alumni magazine piece about Markus.

Yep, I can see why some (OK, one) would call him a cancer.

World could probably use a few more cancers like him.

Pro success ≠ prerequisite

I think a 2x AA with a NPOY oughta do it

Why would his pro career have anything to do with whether his number is retired?

Doc was handicapped by a Head Coach who did not use his talents properly. That is one of the reasons why he left after junior year.   Nonetheless, Doc was a very central to the  achievements that the team did have during his time at MU.

Although in general ,  I would agree Doc was more a total career achievement guy, as opposed to one of the superstars of the past.

Retiring Markus' jersey should be a total no-brainer. All-time leading scorer, will have his degree, will have played 4 years, great representative of the university and its mission.

Thankfully, we get to see him for 4+ more months in that jersey before it's retired!

IMHO, huge pro success can help a guy whose jersey might not otherwise have been retired. But a very clear candidate for retirement like Markus won't be hurt by a lack of it.

I absolutely love Glenn Rivers. But, objectively, one could argue that his accomplishments as a Marquette player were not as "number-retireable" as guys like Diener, Hayward, Butler, Rand, Walton, Lackey, Chones, etc.

I mean, Diener outscored Glenn by nearly 500 points and was a major contributor to a Final Four team.

Undoubtedly, Glenn's accomplishments and contributions after he left Marquette got his number retired. I'm fine with it because he's one of my faves, but let's not pretend these things are only about MU hoops accomplishments.

Does MU retire numbers anymore?  Or just a jersey?

Speaking of which, does Rick get a black sweater hung on the FF rafters? As it is, Rick has won more MU games than any other coach.

Technically its the jersey, which means in theory someone could wear the number.

In practice, I think they try to avoid having someone wear the number. You may remember the Lazar Hayward - George Thompson fiasco.
