OT: Chicago people, Kirkwoods now a Marquette Bar
« on: November 11, 2019, 02:35:52 PM »
Found this out on opening night. Went there to watch the game and they had drink specials for Marquette. Manager is one of the former Schoolyard managers and a Marquette grad. I plan on going there to watch the Marquette/Wisconsin game this weekend.

Seems schoolyard really isn't a Marquette bar since the purchase by Link's.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Did they have the sound on for the game in the bar or just on the TV? Deciding between Kirkwoods and Schoolyard for Sundays game and remember Schoolyard usually pumps in the sound but that was a year or two ago!

Featuring $25 blue fishbowls and $5 jello shots during MU games.   Looks like it's also a Hoosier bar.

The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

Schoolyard is definitely still a Marquette bar but I can't speak to how the gamedsy experience has changed. Plus it'll be competing with the NFL.

Schoolyard was noncommittal when I called about opening game and showing it. Kirkwoods did not have sound during the IU game but there is very little overlap

Maybe your right. Might have been who you talked to or the channel it was on. There are Marquette flags inside and out.

I hope its more like Schoolyard of 5+ years ago, and less like Four Shadows, which was an Iowa bar that flew Marquette flag and pandered to that crowd for any basketball event when Iowa was sucking at basketball.  Or even worse, Will's Northwoods which during basketball season would try to be your coworker who said they rooted for both Marquette and Wisconsin cause they liked to "support all state teams", even though it was Wisconsin as they come.

The only good quality about Will’s is the $3.25 MGD bottles every day.

It's also the only bar in Chicago that I can think of that plays beer dice.

Four Shadows was a decent MU bar for about 2-3 years...the Sweet 16 Buzz years (2011-2013 ish). Went there for the Sweet 16 game against Miami to get us into the Elite 8 and the place was absolutely rocking. Great experience.

After MU went downhill, a lot of the Chicago bars' enthusiasm faded away. If we can return to that level of play, I'm sure it will pick up. They are running a business.

Schoolyard is not what it used to be. They might show the game when there is no conflict, but probably not with sound. I would not consider it an MU bar at all anymore. Glad Kirkwood is at least showing some interest.

I agree with Four Shadows. I do live like a block away, so I might be biased, but I watched the tourney there during the Buzz years and it was definitely nice and rowdy. I was also at Schoolyard last year for the Wisconsin game and it was empty.  I think we should all just agree to stick to Four Shadows and Kirkwood now. I did watch a Thursday day game with Wes Mathews at the schoolyard once though not too long ago, which was pretty awesome, so it still has advantages of people thinking it's still the marquette bar.

I watched the Marquette-Syracuse game to go to the S16 in 2011 there.  It was fun.  But I tried to go there for other games and it was eh.

Agree with Schoolyard, they started to slide more towards U of I and that was that.  I watched a lot of games with nice MU crowds there, but I can remember a lot of painful losses, so maybe good riddance.  Kirkwoods always felt up for grabs, so it would be nice if that could become a stronghold coinciding with the program getting back on track.

As I said, the person who got it to be a Marquette bar was stoked I was there for the Loyola game. He's an MU grad as well. If we fill it, we can get it.

Sounds like something to say in the mirror before heading to the bar...

But seriously I used to like Kirkwoods, their beer garden is solid but I just don't see it. They're so entrenched with Nebraska and IU that I don't see us fitting in. Maybe third option? But even then I'd wonder if they'd put a Pro game over us (not this year as everyone is complete trash).

What?  Since when.  I lived 100 yards away on Scott for 3 years and then around the corner at Lasalle and Division and all I know OTP for was Natural Light bottles in an ice chest and my friends liked their pizza.  I never knew them to have any affiliation period.

Bumping this ...

Going to Chicago for a few days to visit the grand-twins, and visit will include Jan 1, when MU opens BE play at Creighton.

If Kirkwood is open, I like the looks of it online -- good specials on their website, and their very first FB post is a bunch of folks in MU garb getting ready for NDakSt game.

We used to live just a few blocks away and I did go there a couple times, but that was long ago and it wasn't for MU games.

So, have those who have gone there this season been pleased with the experience? Anybody planning to be there night of Jan. 1?

FYI - There’s also a “bar” in Lake County with an open invite that has every away game on a 10’ screen and serves free beer & popcorn.

But there’s also Christmas decorations in the tree out front right now, so caveat emptor.

I have nothing against Christmas decorations when they are put up by those who celebrate Christmas in front of their own Christmas-celebrating houses. I actually enjoy looking at some of the more interesting, elaborate displays ... though I do chuckle sometimes when those displays are still on display in February.

Of course, you know all of that, Benny, but I thought I'd play along.

There's a house in my town that the last 5 years or so has put up a Cousin Eddie display.  They dressed a mannequin to look like Eddie from Christmas Vacation in a robe and the flap hat with cigar in mouth holding some tubing like he's emptying the RV bilge tank.  I laugh every time I drive by.

It's not posh unless things have really changed. I went there more than a few times as an underager. Plus they've catered to IU and Nebraska getting large crowds for them for years. Plus have a large rowdy trivia night.

Had the game on numerous TVs, and yes they had sound.

It was my first time, and it was a good MU crowd. Unfortunately, our lads didn't play well, so the handful of Creightoners that were there were the ones who got to celebrate.

Generally, enjoyed the experience and will go back next time I'm in Chicago and an MU game is being played.

Even got to meet JakeBarnes and his lovely wife. Good people.

At commonwealth. There's literally nobody else here.

The cheese curds are legit though

Edit: a few more people showed up but still nothing compared to the old days at the schoolyard

At commonwealth. There's literally nobody else here.

I was at Commonwealth last year for the UW game and it was packed with MU people.  I wanted to head over for tonight's game, but unfortunately I wasn't able to make it.  Maybe for NMD.

So what’s the best choice for the Butler game in the Chicago area?  Kirkwood’s, Old Town Pub, or Commonwealth?  Schoolyard used to be the choice.

Need the sound on but atmosphere and food and drinks are important.

Been going to commonwealth. Solid cheese curds, stadium cup beer specials, sound on, etc. can't speak to the atmosphere, nothing will compare to the old schoolyard

Definitely the most convenient location for me followed by Kirkwoods. Thanks.

Brought a small group to Commonwealth today. The staff were great. Plenty of teevees many of which went to the MU game at 1:00 plus audio. Everyone liked the food. There were about 10 other alum there. Nice drink and beer selection. Definitely worth another visit. A nice plus was playing the fight song over the audio system at the end of the victory and we all joined in.

Wow way to not say hi. I mean I was wearing my massive neon sign that said "Bagpipingboxer Galway Eagle" on it.

Next time., though I’ll be at NMD, so maybe one after that.  We were in the back with one lone DePaul guy with us as well.
