Quote from: MU82 on January 22, 2026, 08:08:43 PMThirty years ago, there was little if any gap in the share of U.S. consumer spending between the richest 20% of Americans and the poorest 80%. But that gap has widening significantly over the decades, and that's not good for a consumer-based economy.

Those poors just gotta spend more.  Either that or don't be poor.  Don't they get it?

100% tariffs just announced against Canada.  First question is why?  Second question is whether anybody takes this horseshiit seriously anymore.

The why is because Canada made a trade deal with China.

The last time we did this (the last time this idiot was president) it decimated manufacturing dependent on Aluminum.

The same thing will happen this time. Because these dummies learn 0 lessons.

I think the "why" is the speech yesterday by Carney.

Tesla stopping production on two models. (Who could have seen that coming)  Focusing on autonomous vehicles and robots.  I can think of few things scarier than a robot army created by Elon Musk.

My daughter owns the 2018 Model X (one of the models just discontinued). It's been mostly a bad car for them - uncomfortable, poor fit and finish, punishing ride on anything but the smoothest of roads, and requiring lots of expensive repairs and maintenance. They thought about trading it in a year or so ago, but the trade-in value was so low that they decided to wait.

I do know others who have had better experiences with their "Teslers," so maybe they were just unlucky.

Regardless, I second your scary thought.

A robot army created by Peter Thiel, who is WAY smarter and more dangerous than Musk.
If you think for one second that I am comparing the USA to China you have bumped your hard.

Several of my coworkers are convinced Palantir is the devil too.  I'm still convinced AI is too dumb to spell.  Convince me otherwise.

I'm not sure that AI has to be smart to be dangerous, but I'd argue Palantir is both smart and exceptionally dangerous.

This is already almost 8 years old. https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2018-palantir-peter-thiel/?terminal=true

I'd place very, very large bets that the data the DOGE boys stole all ended up not only being fed into Grok, but handed to Palantir, too.

Not to mention what Thiel said he wanted to accomplish in the Epstein files

They've privatized the deep state, but didn't bother to let congress know.

Found something new that no one was making a buck on, greased the right palms, and now they have all the information they need on everyone.

Reasonable, though I think the government will collect, and will try to use as much data as people are willing to put out there regardless.  The question is whether AI is really helping them sort/use that data more efficiently.  I'm not sold.
