Redshirt Markus?
« on: October 11, 2019, 10:47:01 AM »
A big trend in college football is redshirting players after game 4 if your season is going off the rails.

I think we should look to redshirt Markus if we don't sweep Purdue and Davidson.   One thing to consider, he is young for his class and a extra year of development might be good for his game.

I would first check with the ortho doctor to see how much more height there is in his growth plates. He might be 6’7” after a year.

Of course, though, he would be graduate transfer eligible then and MSU would pick him up.

Has anyone actually followed the dumpster fire that it is Houston Cougar Football this year (where the idea of redshirting skilled players to delay them a year came from)?  Absolute disaster.  One of their players went on an epic Twitter rant against their coaching staff for the hypocrisy of preaching commitment and dedication to be successful, only to now start tanking the season in order to preserve everyone's status for next year.  Pretty damning stuff.

I would be ashamed to be a fan and an alum of a school program that would do that (throw in the towel on an entire season) - especially after they just spend like $4 million annually on a new head coach.  Hilariously, Houston's President also went on record last year that the school will fire coaches for going 8-4.  I wonder what they do to coaches that finish 1-11?

HUGE NO to redshirting seniors if the team encounters early season losses.  Fight until the end with what you have.

In college basketball I wouldn't, unless the star senior actually had an injury and could make a comeback towards the end of the year but the only way to make the NCAA Tournament at that point would be the win a conference tournament.  But in college football when literally a single loss takes you out of contention for an NCAA title unless your school name is Alabama, Clemson, or Ohio State?  Sure, I'd definitely redshirt star players and see them come back the following season, and as a fan I'd be thrilled with that decision.

I'd argue that so much more could go wrong than go right in that scenario.

Other schools can easily begin to use that as a negative recruiting tool "If you lose a game, you will be benched for an entire year, delaying opportunity to go to the pros, increasing odds of players potentially getting injured, etc."  Additionally, what's to stop a redshirted player from just transferring to become immediately eligible at another school?  At a place like Houston, which is a glorifed G5 program, they aren't playing for a CFP spot annually.  Their ceiling is a NY6 bid, and in a league where SMU is now up, Memphis remains up and UCF continues to recruit Florida well, schools like Houston can't afford to "take a year off" in hopes it will be better next year - especially since Houston ponied up big money to hire Hologorsen from WVU.  Not a good look at all.

Imagine if Marcus does take the shirt.  Then we miss the NCAA's, amd wojo is canned.

Having a super senior like Marcus would be a very attractive piece to draw in a new coach.

College football has diff redshirt rules. In CBB, if you play a second of any game, you cannot redshirt.

Well, apparently we'd be planning -- in advance -- Markus's season-ending injury that would allow him to come back for a fifth year.   ::)

I'm sure that Lens was referring to losses in a controlled scrimmage with another school and an exhibition assuring that MU was eliminated from the NCAA Tourney prior to the start of the season.

there are different rules in college football. In every other sport to get a medical hardship, one must have medical documentation of a season ending injury. That includes repeated check-ins with doctors and rehab throughout the year. Unless that happens I doubt one of our team doctors would falsify a diagnosis and medical records and subject themselves to sanctions or even losing their licenses.

That's Iowa, not Purdue.  Although if we're repeating history, i'd gladly take a L against Purdue if it means that we win the Orlando tourney.

I think we should redshirt everyone except Ed, Sacar, Tommy Gardiner and a couple of walk-ons, and just see how it plays out.

I’d redshirt Ed and Sacar too and replace ‘em with a couple more walk-ons, but I don’t think they’d be eligible absent an injury waiver.

Either way, we’d really be loaded for ‘20-‘21.

You mean unintended consequences happen to these changes in rules?

As others have pointed out, this is only a rule for football.  No other sports use the rule.  And there are a lot of positive benefits to the rule.  If a player gets injured, they don't feel like they have to rush back because their eligibility is slipping away.  It gives others a taste of college football against a crappy team for the same reason.

Holgerson is abusing the rule.  But who is it harming exactly?  Not the players, who will get another year.  And if they graduate they may get that opportunity at another school.  He certainly is harming himself and his reputation, but if he has the backing of his athletic director, I think that's fine too.

And of course the fans.  But of course the whole theory is that they are going to lose now for the sake of winning later.  Will that happen?  Who knows.  Under previous rules, he could have redshirted these guys for the entire season.  And that would have been just as controversial IMO.

So in the end, I just don't see what the problem is.  The person who is most likely to be harmed, is the guy whose a$$ is on the line.  The head coach.

Happening at Rutgers right now.  Players opting to sit, leaving coach screwed.

Unintended consequences. Bizarre, silly rule.  4 games.  WTF.  Ridiculous.

Yeah! In the good old days, it was the coach who would quit, leaving the program screwed.

Wow.  Wonderful evidence there.  A sh*tty football program fired its sh*tty coach.  Stop the presses!

We already know your stance.  You don't like anything that gives student athletes options and you don't like change.  IOW, if you think its silly, it must be a good idea.

Good news for those kids redshirting at Houston and Rutger is, they still get an education to go along with crippling long-term pain and injuries and CTE.  Thankfully, they don’t get paid and retain amateur status to entertain fans

Come on. There are some sound and rational arguments to increase compensation and/or out right pay players but to suggest these players are some sort of abused circus animals is laughable. Your better than that.

99% of current or past college football players would never trade places with any 'regular' student and for very good reasons.

99% is high, but the number is large.  Take it also from many of our own former players of the past that have said without hoops, they never would have gone or been accepted to college.

Incorrect.  I like some things that give student athletes options, but think the balance of competition and the investment and risk schools take on them should not be thrown out the door and ignored.

Coaches look out for themselves. Players look out for themselves. No difference. Except the coach is paid zillions of dollars and has a fraud "buyout clause" in his contract.

I am glad to hear that you agree 100% with everything that courts have decided, though.

Zillions of dollars?  Most D1 coaches aren’t paid a million dollars, let alone a zillion (whatever that is).  Hyperbole again.

I don’t agree with everything the courts say, neither do you.

"zillions" is an informal way to say "lots of money." Which you knew.

I'm glad you disagree with a court's ridiculous opinion that college athletes aren't employees.

No, I actually don't agree with you.  They aren't employees.  Period.  For any number of reasons they are not employees as much as you would like them to be, and then you would like them to be the Union type, too....cuz of course you would.  Give an inch, take 20 miles...nope, not employees, not close to employees, courts got that right. The most liberal circuit court in the nation, the 9th circuit, affirmed the decision that the lower court made to dismiss the case in August of this year...they are not employees. This after the original case was filed in San Francisco in the hopes of getting a sympathetic judge...the case was dismissed there originally and appealed to the 9th. Maybe they'll appeal to the SCOTUS, where they will lose again.

1. Just curious if there is actual data, and
2. The number could not be anywhere 99, since Madison has such a high standard for admission, that there athletes would make up nearly 1% by themselves.

Thank God Harvard is a somewhat decent safety school for UW-Madison student athletes or they would have to go to Yale if they didn't get accepted.

While we're talking about things that will never happen, how about bringing back football? Can we put a stadium on the BC lot now that it's clear?

Why is Jeff Bezos wasting one billion a year on a private space program when he could build his own Division I football champ at Marquette for half that?

I mean who's on the Moon to give him a trophy?

AND he could use half of the other half to make St. Thomas Big East basketball champs within ten years!

No not employees, just the people that generate all the income.  Everytime you defend the NCAA revenue sports model, the clearer the hypocrisy becomes to me.

Really...generate all the revenue...all of it.  LOL.   And I’m sorry, do these student athletes receive benefits as well?

Let me know about all the revenue the track, soccer, fencing, volleyball, lacrosse, etc, etc, etc teams are generating while you are at it...so you can expose the “hypocrisy” even more.  LOL
