Biggest miss of the Wojo era
« on: June 09, 2019, 12:54:12 AM »
Which recruiting miss would have had greatest impact on the program? I’d say Khalif - with him I think we do t take a step back in year 4 - much different trajectory.

Khalif Young with his 4 and 4 averages? I don’t think he moves the needle that much. I think Mannion or Amir Coffey is a much bigger miss

I don't know that I'd call losing Grimes to Kansas a miss. KU is one of the five greatest programs in college basketball: 3 NCAA titles, 15 Final Fours, more First Team All Americans than any other school.

Ha - maybe not - I had it in my head that he was a bigger contributor at Providence. Was there another PF we were in on that year?

And pays very well.

At this point Amir is the biggest proven difference maker. Keeping him would have accelerated the recovery of this program post Buzz

Tillman is the biggest miss, he really shown great improvement from his freshman to sophomore year. Much better than Theo on the offensive end,  he is the type of center I like

Did we really have a chance?  Yeah, we saw his Mom’s tweets and the Crystal Bowel shifted to MU the morning of his announcement.  But, truthfully, did we really think he was going to announce MU in front of a packed HS auditorium in Grand Rapids that announcement day (while his pregnant GF watched)?  So “close”, but really far away?   PS, he did get married a couple weeks ago per an MSU blog page I was checking while following the Hausers recruitment.

Who was the transfer that almost came here till Henry Ellenson committed?

Do not know, but always felt we lost him, because his girlfriend got pregnant.

Yes!  Great catch.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Zion Williamson.

Marquette also missed on Lew Alcindor. That’s on Wojo too.

He was from So. Cal. I was one of a few who did not like the Ellenson mania because I thought Henry's one year would cost us more in the long run.
Wojo's Dukie obsession with landing a 5 star showing off for scouts when we needed someone wanted to play for MU.

Kyle Washington. Land him and once Henry goes, we would've had an All-conference level replacement. The 2017 team would've had the interior toughness needed to weather those close losses. The 2018 team would've had that missing presence to push them to a NCAA bid.

I really, really liked watching Coffey play the few times I saw Minnesota games. Aggressive, confident, talented, tough. I knew his dad a little bit, and he had those same traits, but the kid's a better all-around basketball player. Woulda looked great in a Marquette uni.

Several of the other selections are good, too. Washington and Tillman for sure.

And as chili says, I can't believe Wojo missed on Zion. And KD. And both Waltons.

Yeah that's always been my thought. Even if Levin has stayed we would've been better off.

How does one know if we landed one of these guys what impact, negative or positive they would have?  Grimes is one such example.

I feel like Coffey was inconsistent at Minnesota at best.  He had some amazing games, and some where he completely disappeared.  Now he is off on a potentially Quixotic quest for spot on an NBA roster.  Maybe a little more Vander-like than you think.
I mean, OK, maybe he's secretly a serial killer who's pulled the wool over our eyes with his good deeds and smooth jumper - Pakuni (on Markus Howard)
