Favorite encounters with athletes
« on: March 20, 2019, 04:41:14 PM »
An old picture of me and Bobby Hull popped up on my Facebook today so that reminded me of a funny story.

Met Bobby Hull at a restaurant I used to work at, he was doing a meet and greet. When he was done I went over to say hi to him and take a picture. "Absolutely, no problem at all," Super nice dude.

Anyways, during this time, the Blackhawks happened to be playing on TV, we both kinda looked up to watch it and he turns to me and goes "Man that 32 really fu**ing sucks doesn't he? He can't skate worth a damn" He was talking about Michal Rozsival, and I absolutely burst out laughing because of how brutally honest he was.

Sat with him for the next 10 or so minutes just watching the game while he complained and shared some stories from his playing days. Pretty cool stuff.

Great thread idea!  spring, 1993, Reinko as an 8th grader was surprised with a trip to Spring Training with my dad in Arizona to see the Brewers.  Go karts with Pat Listach, going to Sunday mass with the whole Brewer team at their complex, hanging with Brian Harpers dad who scored me a bat...

Fun times!  Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Was at Elsa's in Milwaukee around 1994 (might be off a year or two) and our entire table said "Disco Danny Mac" (nickname) when I arrived.  Ray Allen,  then with the Bucks must have overheard because when we got up to leave he and his entourage were leaving as well...

He came by outside and said "Danny Mac,  how 'bout those Disco moves?"  To which I replied:  "Ray:  They called me Disco because I don't have the moves".

Allen could not have been more disappointed.  He nearly walked away,  then step back and just said "Maaaan."  My friends to this day still do the impression of his disheartened reaction.   ;D

Back in '83, when I was a newly minted freshman, I saw Doc Rivers walking out of the athletic building and I waved at him.

Good times.

At the Rec Center on a Saturday morning.    One game going full court, I call 'next'.    Down behind the curtain, I see a guy signing autographs for kids.   He starts walking toward me and I recognize that it is Paul Molitor.   He asks who has next, I answer that I do, he asks if he can get in.    I say sure.
The game starts and he turns out to be a ballhog with terrible hands who shoots every time.    I actually found myself yelling at the future hall of famer to get back on defense.     We lose, he says thanks and leaves.

Jordan had a celebrity golf tournament for 2 years, and summer of 94 I caddied in it. I was in the first group out and caddied for Bobby Anderson. After the round was over, they were somehow short a volunteer at the first tee, so they asked me to escort the celebrity golfer into the tent at the first tee, and tell the celebrity to sign the tournament posters which were going to be auctioned off at the tournament.

I met a ton of famous athletes, politicians, entertainers. One in particular was in the tent with me and said he was starving and asked if there was anything to eat. He and I both looked around, and I ended up finding a full package of Oreo’s in a bag. Guy turns and asks “Do you think we’ll get in trouble if we eat these?” I said to him “we’ll blame it on Charles Barkley”. I ended up eating half a bag of Oreo’s with Smokey Robinson.

Not an athlete but a sports figure.

My 12th birthday, we had a big bash at Harry Carey's.   This was pre-stroke, so HC was good and polluted.

He shows up to the party room we had.  One of my neighbors had a Corey haim mullet that put Corey to sham.

We all get together to sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame, all the kids with Harry.  He has his hand around my mulletted friend's shoulder.  Halfway through the song, Harry realizes that the long hair is flowing from a boy's head.  He moves his arm to one of the teenage girls shoulder.

When the song was done, he grabbed my mom and planted a giant slobbery kiss right on the lips.

Its funnier to see on video, but was a memorable birthday nevertheless.

I was a big Dolphins fan when they were the best team on the planet in the early '70s, and I was visiting my aunt and uncle in Miami when I was 13. (As was the law, if you were from the East coast and Jewish, once you hit 65 you had to move there.) It was my first airplane trip ever.

The doorbell rang one day and it was Nick Buoniconti, then the Dolphins' All-Pro MLB, and he gave us tickets for the 1973 playoff game vs. the Bengals. Plus, he played catch with a football with me in the parking lot even though he was wearing a suit.

As it turned out, a woman who lived in their condo complex was Buoniconti's secretary, and my uncle (who like Buoniconti was a lawyer) arranged for the tickets. So that was pretty cool for a young kid like me.

The Dolphins crushed the Bengals and I had a blast at the first pro sporting event I ever attended. They killed the Raiders the next week. And two weeks later, they annihilated the Vikings for their second straight title.

When they get involved with my kids, a bunch of cool memories for them and for me as a dad.

I saw Joe Nethen ~5 years ago at a festival.

I went up to him and said hello .. "hey, you're Joe Nethen right?  We lived at McCormick at the same time, 1987."

He shook my hand and 5 seconds later asked "I didn't beat you up or nuthing, did I?" .. I imagine he says that to everyone he meets from that era.

Mine was in high school. My closest friend from high school's father worked for the local ABC affiliate in Nashville. The Atlanta Braves winter caravan was coming through and he asked if my friend and I wanted to go to the Braves press conference with the local sports editor.

We rode out in a television mobile cruiser, got to the conference and were told stand in the back and be quiet while the working media did their jobs. We did and just watched in awe as Eddie Matthews, Rico Carty, Phil Niekro and a couple of other Braves did their presentations.

When the questions were done, Mr. Matthews grasped Mr. Niekro and walked over to us. The two of them saw us, said hello and began engaging in baseball talk. We were mesmerized as they talked about pitching and hitting for a couple of minutes.

My second was Jose Posada, the catcher for the New York Yankees, who signed for my 12-year-old son in a Nordstrom's in downtown Seattle. Hate the Yankees but loved Jorge ever after.

Never got the chance to meet Stan Musial or Bob Gibson, who I admired growing up. And, of course, I would have killed for an hour with Al McGuire, who basically could do no wrong in my mind -- even after the double technicals!

Steve Novak took my daughter to homecoming.  Puked in my powder room on a different night when Sir Larry was not home.

Lew Alcindor, before he was Kareem, was on my paper route.
Always tipped well.

Ran with Al McGuire in Al’s run for about three minutes.  He was gassed.

I caddied for Jenny Lidback of the LPGA during a charity outing at Conway Farms. When a CF member in my group asked ME (and not Jenny) why his swing was off  (I was his regular looper) I told him that he was seriously fast in the transition, and was probably subconsciously over swinging so as not to be outdriven by Jenny. He was a heck of a player and had won the club championship before. My advice to him was to stare in almost a hypnotic state at Ms Lidback’s ridiculously smooth tempo swing and emulate it. He starts puring it every single shot, and Lidback is like “what happened?” The guy goes “Rob told me to stare at you longingly.”  “Your swing of course.”

I remember Laura Davies doing that turf-bash thing in the Solheim Cup at Rich Harvest as well. Sometimes pros will do that when they’re getting a little too shallow in the hitting area, or when they want to hit a fade.

Christie is pretty cool, so that story surprises me. I wonder if it was her caddie that asked that the guy be yanked. Those guys can be brutal though. They often do more harm than good at tournaments, and most just do it for the free round of golf they usually get.

Lots of personal encounters when I was a kid during Al's day, but my favorite was with my daughter.

She was in about 6th or 7th grade, and had been struggling in school. I told her she could go to the game if she turned everything in on time and participated in class (didn't want to make it dependent on a specific grade). She did.

It was early season (November), and she had only been on campus in the winter, so we came to Milwaukee earlier than usual to walk around campus. Turned out to be a torrential downpour, so we decided to pass a few hours in the union. We walk into the Spirit Shop (which was virtually empty that early), and Dominic James was standing there. She told him that she was allowed to go to the game because her grades were improving. DJ gives her a short pep talk about the importance of school - which she listened to FAR more intently than she'd ever listen to me - and became an honors/AP student overnight.

To this day, she credits Dominic with making her take school more seriously...although I hope I helped a little bit myself....  ;)

I hope you saved that puke and then sold it on eBay to a Knicks fan during Linsanity!

1995 I was in Cleveland area for a wedding and as I did at the time wherever I travelled I started calling YMCA's looking for a pickup basketball game.  Finally the East Cleveland Y says "yeah, a bunch of guys come in around noon, just show up".  So I went early and was shooting around and warming up and a bunch of TREES walk in.  Seemed like everyone was 6'7 or larger.

Eventually the biggest guy comes up to me and says.  "Hi, my name is Jim, you want to play?"  I said yes, thats why I'm here... he says well, the way we keep all these lazy buggers on time is that the first guy in the gym gets first pick... that's you, and your first pick is me - and then you let me pick the rest.

He proceeded to pick Tony Miller with the next pick and two other guys I didn't know.  We held the court the whole day... never lost.

Jim, of course, was Jim Chones.

Was cutting past the Plankinton Mansion where two guys were smoking weed on the west side steps. I recognized them as Mike Norris and Rickey Henderson who were in town with the A's.

I spoke with them for a few minutes then asked if they could leave me tix at Will Call. There were 4 for each of the remaining two games.

In high school in the mid-70's while working at a grocery store in Hales Corners, I regularly packed groceries for Robin Yount.  He was the nicest guy and was always made nice small talk as I packed the groceries and loaded into his car.

Was at Goolsby's after a Bucks game next to Brian Winters.  Told him good game, and he sent a pitcher over to our table.  I assume it was a comp.

In another thread, I told of my flight sitting next to Al.

At an MU Block Party around 1979, someone bumped into me and I spilled my beer on Sam Worthen.

Several years ago I got to play Rich Harvest Farms for the first time.  After the 11th hole, the skies opened up so we went to the half way house to wait it out. Everyone else had the same idea and soon, Bo Jackson walked in.  Bo starts telling stories from his baseball days and someone asks, what city has the best looking fans?  Without skipping a beat (except for Bo's little stutter), he says, "without a doubt, Arlington, Texas.  Remember when Robin Ventura got hit by Nolan Ryan, Robin charged the mound and Nolan got Robin in a headlock?"  We all nodded, as it was something we all remembered.  Bo says, "go back and watch it again and see how long it takes us to get out of the dugout to help Robin.  We were too busy looking at the p-$$y in the stands to get out there."

Dom was definitely the celebrity of the 3 Amigos class early on, and in my experience he was always really gracious about it.  I was a student at the time, and had just bought my brother some Christmas gifts at the spirit shop (he would've been about your daughter's age) when I walked by Dom heading into the Union. I jogged back and asked if he would sign a couple things as my brother was a big fan. He was really cool about it, asked my brother's name so he could personalize the autographs, etc.

I took a team sports class taught by Charlie Nader (who was then the golf coach), and Glenn Rivers was in the class. Rampant cheating took place, and not just by Rivers.

For the big exam on volleyball, we were all in a conference room. Nader left the room for about 10 minutes, and we were all collaborating on answers for pretty much every question.

My freshman year at MU, fall '65, was the year the Braves announced they were moving to Atlanta. Ironically they were in the thick of the pennant race, but the whole town boycotted the last few remaining games. The had a 3 game home set with the Dodgers at County Stadium; My room mate, from Fresno CA, and I got tickets right behind the Dodger dugout. We both got signed baseballs from Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax. What are the odds of two guys from the opposite ends of the country having that opportunity and experience because we chose Marquette. Still have those balls and I'm a life long Yankee fan.

As Ive mentioned in the past, I went to Miami University for undergrad.  My freshman year coincided with Big Ben's last year  Beyond his off the field issues in Pitt, he was kind of surly about all the attention he started to get.  However, I had 2 great interactions with him.  Once, after a big weeknight ESPN MACtion win, I saw him out at the bars.  Dumb, slightly buzzed freshman I was, I went up to congratulate him.  One of his OL stepped in and started to say something, Ben moved him aside, poured me a beer from his pitcher and talked to me for a few min.  Guess he was in a great mood.

Another time, right before he left school for the draft after the bowl game, I was at a bar, scuffle broke out, I sort of scurried to get out of the way, tripped on a stool and started to fall into the hallway near the bathrooms.  Big dude catches me from behind, stands me up, says "all good boss" and gives me a pat on the butt.  #7 yet again.

Same vein, my best friend in college was a FB player.  Through parties and other events, ran into Sean McVay a lot.  Proud of him as a fellow alum and amazed he's found success so early...but he was a complete dickhead.  Only FB player who ever tried to get me tossed from a party with a "who do you know here".  Seems like he's grown out of it.

Ray Allen used to come and play basketball with my friend who lived near him early in his career in Mequon.

Once went to a club in Chicago for a friends bday, Curtis Granderson was at the table next to us. Super friendly, really outgoing. Comped our bill when he heard it was a bday and was an effortless wingman.  Conversely, every low level Bears backup OL or backup LB on a rookie minimum were the biggest a**holes you could come across in the Chicago bar/club scene.

1963..Very young in Twin Cities I went to VBS at St Peters on France Ave in Edina, and got to be good friends with "Junior"...a kid who loved to hum, sing joke and laugh with me in the back of the pretty boring summertime bible classes.

A week or so later I ran into Junior at Edina garden center. We played, ran, talked and laughed. My dad ran up and I could tell he was a little off put...why was his son so friendly with a black kid (a rare sighting in Edina in those days) ...just as he walked up to us, Junior's dad emerged from the aisle...it was Vic Power first baseman for the Twins.

I had no idea who Junior's dad was(he wasnt in a Twins uni...just sported a panama hat and cigar-lol)  but he seemed very nice and friendly. My Dad knew who Vic was.....started gushing admiration, greetings etc. From then on, my dad was fine with me hanging with Junior. By the accident of my Junior friendship , I ended up at the Powers home may times ...met Tony Oliva, Zoilo Versailles, Camilo Pascual...(the latino players hung together). As the Twins made the world series in 65 against Sandy Koufax's Dodgers ...I always felt close to that team because the Junior friendship led me to know its Latino pipeline group.

I have many later athlete encounters later with guys I knew and recognized....but, this one is special due to its innocence and my ignorance. As Junior would say...Oh those are just my Poppys friends.

BTW of the group...Tony Oliva was the nicest. Not sure if he even knew a word of english...but he would always smile laugh and soft lob toss the baseball with us.

When I was about 14 I was at a Cubs convention and we had scored tickets to ballroom buffet from my friend's uncle who worked for Pepsi at the time.  We went into the buffet and the only empty table had a coat over one of the chairs, but the other 5 or 6 chairs were free, so we put our coats on them and went to get food. When we came back to the table we saw that the coat belonged to Ernie Banks. We apologized to Ernie and started to walk away, but he called us to sit down.
He talked to us for 20 minutes, asking us what positions we played (I was never so happy that I was a SS), and asked us if we had girlfriends (not even close).  It was such a great experience.

My second favorite encounter came in 2015. Me and a friend of mine were randomly selected as Illinois Lotto fans of the game at Wrigely, and if the Cubs were to score a run in the 2nd inning we'd get a prize. Bryant hit a solo shot into the right field basket.  The prize was to come back later in the season and have a dinner and meet and greet with a Cub. The game we got to come back to was Arrieta's 20th win, and we had a dinner with 30 or so other people and the Cub circling the tables was Bob Dernier.  He had clearly had an Old Style or two.  He saw that we were a table of guys and so some of the stories got a little crazy.  I asked him what it was like leading off for Pete Rose.  He first said that he liked being a lead off man and it never intimidated him, but instead, he "got hard."  Then told a story about Rose calling him up in his hotel room when on the road one time and telling him to come over to the his room.  He opened the door to find Pete is tube socks and tighty whiteys and there were "two cheerleaders" on Pete's bed. He then paused and stopped the story and said, "that's just the type of guy Pete was."

One of my wife's roommates at the Ardmore was a Marquette cheerleader from Cincinnati. Pat Cummings was on the Bucks at the time and after a night of drinking he would come over for some relief with his fellow Ohioan.

More than once I saw him head into the kitchen to grab a beer wearing nothing but a Louisville Slugger.

The Ardmore had a bar downstairs when I was at MU between ‘88 and ‘92. Not sure if it existed when you were there. Fun place...the owner loved The Rolling Stones and he would jimmy the juke box to play their tunes all thru the week...somehow, never got tired of MonkeyMan or Sympathy despite hearing them like 5G times over the years.
Zenyatta has a lot....a lot... of ground to make up. She gets there from here she’d be a super horse......what’s this.....Zenyatta hooked to the grandstand side....Zenyatta flying on the outside....this....is...un-belieeeeeevable!...looked impossible at the top of the stretch...

Thought of another. My favorites are stories where I look the fool before the famous. Here is one.

I am seated in the back on a flight and just before takeoff Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan jumps onboard. This occurred about a year after the Olympics and the Tonya Harding knee capping incident.

We land in DFW. Nancy  gets off first. We both were heading for connecting flights. I saw her ahead and kept following her about 20 feet behind the whole way...we must have walked past at least 20 gates.

I noticed she looked sideeyed a few times. When Nancy finally got to her gate she stopped short and suddenly whipped around and says "What the hell do you want" ....Sheepishly I handed a pen and paper , asking and getting her autograph for my daughter (at the time she was every little girl's hero). Nancy smiled, calmed down and was very nice.

I got home with the autograph and told wife the story. I am still clueless...but My wife explained ...."you idiot, your following spooked her ,think about it, you're a stranger following her.....it was a flashback to the kneecapping" DOH....Instead of being a hero to my daughter ....my wife and daughter took turns calling me "Shawn" or "Jeff Gillooly"  for months after that.

Have told story on here before, but Doc Rivers called my future wife because I told him I was waiting for her to call and ask me out. Doc indirectly changed my life forever and greatly appreciated.
Will add, he is far better at picking a wife than adding to a coaching search.

Fun topic. I have a lot, too many to list. I worked in the suites at Wrigley for 3 years, and any of the visiting "celebrities" (a term used pretty loosely some days) brought in for the first pitch/seventh inning stretch would be set up in the suites. Lots of cool/memorable interactions with people.

Obviously a lot of former Cubs are brought back throughout the season. Met a bunch of the Bears - the O-line guys were always the most fun. Those big boys can put back bbq by the truckload.

I met the entire Hawks team when they brought in the Cup. We bent some of the liquor rules for those guys. Kris Versteeg put me in a headlock.

Also used to play against Shaun Livingston back in the day. Taught him everything he knows, basically.

It was the Ardmore Bar. There was actually a back door passage that led from the bar to the apartments.

Yeah, Doc called her on my behalf. Basement on Johnson Hall, July 11th, 1985. Actually to make story better, Greg “Pope” Johnson instigated our meeting again after couple year break. Two Warriors changed my love life and life forever.

Coach Jim Calhoun was walking next to me at the XL Center on Thursday on my way out of the game.  I didn't realize until someone on my right said "Coach!"  I gave a look and a "What?!"  Until the guy said "Coach Calhoun on your left." is when I finally realized.
It's obviously sports, not athlete related.

Sitting in a DFAC at 0 Dark Thirty at some FOB in Iraq when a random guy comes up, tells us he's jet lagged and asks if he can join us. Turns out it's Kris Kristofferson.

He sees our Ranger tabs and tells us he is also tabbed. Turns out he is a helo pilot and went through the School back in the '60's.

Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar and Gold Gloves boxer. He went on for an hour with some great stories about boxing, rowing crew and playing rugby at Oxford, and how he was a long distance runner - all the while chain smoking Camels in what was supposed to be a smoke-free chow hall.

He talked a lot about his wife Lisa, who back in the day was a babe, but all of us really wanted to ask why he ever hooked up with Barbra Streisand who, in addition to being unattractive, has some questionable, if not genuinely bizarre, personal opinions about the world and how it works.

The Kris Scorecard:

Points for being a genuine Patriot, Kiowa Driver, getting tabbed, marrying a hot babe, hanging with Willie, Waylon, and Johnny.

Demerits for hanging with Barbra Streisand.

I never noticed that.

His character in The Big Lebowski is one for the ages. Sublime.

Your scorecard is incomplete. He also hung out with you....

leading me to an entirely different conclusion. Kris lacks all social filters and is open enough to hang with any fellow human....even you.

It has not.  My daughter says very few join.  600 students in total according to Office of Student Life, that is less than 10%

But that is three to four times what it was when I was a student in the early '80's.  And at least on the sorority side, there are way more girls rushing than there are spots for them.  And several new Greek Houses have been built around campus in the past few years.  Cedar Square, the big landlord in the Marquette area, built them in exchange for long-term leases with the fraternities and sororities.

But yeah,  it's not like it's Greek like an SEC school or anything.

In the late 80s, the only people that joined frats or sororities were those who had trouble making friends the normal way.  They did throw good parties during rush week though.
