Football really killed their once "blue blood" basketball program. Joining the ACC has not done much for Notre Dame, Pitt or Syracuse either. Hell, the ACC is just a two team basketball conference with 2 or 4 wannabes.

...and their football teams really stink.

I’d say oversimplifying since they have 3 #1 seeds this year. I wonder if ND hoops would be better still in the Big East. Football wouldn’t allow that though.

I'd love to know what percentage of NY sports fans give a rat's rump about Rutgers football.

I'm guessing it's even smaller than the percentage of Chicago sports fans who give a rat's rump about Northwestern basketball. Probably even significantly smaller.
Northwestern Football actually has value added to its Big Ten brethren . They serve as an unofficial home away from home gain for most teams in the league . So people in Chicago actually touch and feel that program . And of course who could ever forget the old name of their field...
The only mystery in life is why the Kamikaze Pilots wore helmets...
