Who to root for today
« on: December 15, 2018, 06:39:14 AM »
Gonzaga over No. 12 North Carolina
Washington over No. 13 Va Tech
No. 14 Buffalo over Southern Illinois

If all 3 win, MU could be playing a number 12 team at home for the 3rd time in 3 weeks.

Least likely win is Washington at Va Tech (VT  is a 6.5 point favorite) - Washington is solid (lost by 2 to the Zags), but on the road vs the Buzzards is a tough ask. North Carolina also home and a 2 point favorite.

Of course root for the rest of the BE - Nova at KU could be ugly this morning.

Other less likely ones to root for:

South Dakota State over #7 Nevada: This might be the only time all year Nevada doesn't have the best player on the court. Mike Daum is an excellent college player, but the Jackrabbits have struggled away from home at times. Unlikely upset, but if Daum & David Jenkins both go off, not impossible.

UAB over #8 Auburn: The Tigers travel to Birmingham to play a UAB team they should handle comfortably, but it could be a hostile crowd in the Blazers' backyard, even though it's technically a neutral site game.

Abilene Christian over #11 Texas Tech: The Wildcats bring a 9-1 record to Lubbock to play a Texas Tech team that could be caught looking ahead to a trip to NYC to play Duke in 5 days. I think this is probably the least likely of the three.

So far today...

  • Auburn tied with UAB in the first half.
  • TexasTech up 25 in the second half on Abilene Christian.
  • North Carolina up 12 in the second half on Gonzaga.
  • Va Tech up 18 in the second half on Washington.
  • Buffalo beat SIU.
  • Ohio State beat Bucknell (barely).
  • Arizona State beat Georgia.*
* Georgia choked against ASU. They were up 70-64 and gave up a 9-0 run. Then trailing by 1 with 9 seconds to play, Georgia had about the worst inbound play I've ever seen, throwing the ball right to ASU freshman star Luegentz Dort. They got a look to tie but missed it at the buzzer.

Not too often I see energy in the building or even people for an Georgia basketball non-league game. They were in control. Nice comeback win for ASU and the Pac-12.

It felt so much like that Butler/Indiana game. Butler and Georgia both led until after the under-4 timeout in the second half, gave up big runs to lose the lead, then battled back in only to lose the game in the last few seconds.

My biggest disappointment was that there was a chance the AP #25 team could lose 3 times in the same day. #25 Syracuse lost to Old Dominion, #25 Indiana almost lost to Butler, #25 Kansas State is playing upset-minded Georgia State right now. All 3 are tied in the polls, would've made for an interesting day.

Not a huge surprise to me if you understand how that state goes. (Iron Bowl and Paul Finebaum and such)  85% of the Birmingham crowd are Auburn fans. Good game with UAB on CBSSN.

UAB drills three 3s in the final minute to send it to overtime with Auburn. Heck of a competitive game. UAB looked dead in the water after leading 47-40 before giving up a 10-2 & 8-0 runs to let Auburn stake a lead. Good day of hoops.

Bell, who hit the 2 three's is a transfer from Milwaukee. Not sure how he was declared eligible on 11/6/18 to play this season without sitting out.

Nevada rallies in the second half to escape 72-68. Mike Daum went 1/10 from the field. Woof.

Think this would be pretty cool to keep up with as the year goes on (much like the TV guide thread). That being said there is no way I keep up with it so everyone feel free to add what you think is "important". I will put the teams we want to win in bold then edit to show if they won or lost. Paint touches does something very similar for "bubble watch" which will not happen this year (knocks on wood)

I'm going for Detroit...I remember going with my dad to Calihan hall, a "barn" UD played it .. Dick Vitale, John Long, Terry Tyler, Terry Duerod....always a close game with MU...beat them away one year. McGuire called it a zoo....no steeper seats anywhere. I'm sure I'd have hit the playing floor if I fell out of my seat.

I would be very surprised if they got a 5 seed with that record. I think they make it as an at large but would be closer to the bubble. A few years back Murray State went 30-1 and was ranked #12 in the nation but they were only given a 6 seed. Could be wrong but I think that Murray State team was better than this Furman team.

Basically because I hate the Pac-12 and I don’t want them to have any credibility. Don’t think Baylor is great either and didn’t want Oregon to get a “big road win”

I think we'd rather have Indiana over Jville, but otherwise, looks like we have a chance to make some hay today (in the eyes of poll voters).
Also, I love it when MU takes care of their own bidness and this stuff doesn't matter as much!

Wow.  WI was favored to win this game by 9 by KenPom.  Bad loss for Bucky!

The first thing I thought of was our loss at Green Bay. Playing on the road at mid-majors, especially ones that are motivated (UWGB with Wardle and the in-state rivalry, WKU with the Davison flop) is tough. And Bassey is a pro. He was really good today. UW-M will be fine. Still probably win 12-13 games in the Big 10 (20 game schedule) and get a 5/6 seed.

He looked tremendous considering he was going up against an All American.

Ok. Bringing this back.

MU is in the top 16 per the selection committee. In as a 3 seed.

It’s safe to say we want everyone around us to lose so we can be a 1 seed!

But hey, here is my attempt at who to root for today Saturday 16th.

Maryland (24) Over (6) Mich (mich is on the cusp and have had some losses soon. Would be nice to have them drop)

Louisville (16) over Clemson.

Wake over UNC (8)

Penn state over (12) Purdue

Tenn (1) over (5) Kentucky

Wyoming over (7) Nevada

(Again these are my takes if y’all disagree please do and let me know!)

I agree with this analysis.

Why Louisville?  Would think we want them to go down.

Louisville almost pulled a Creighton.   It actually may have been even worse than a Creighton.  Final sequence:

Cards make 2 FT with about 15 seconds left to go up 7.  Clemson 3, jumpball to Clemson, another 3, steal...Jordan Nwora blocks the shot after turning the ball over.

Cards win by 1.

And Tulane, but that's an 18 point underdog.

Always root for the teams you play against. You want a strong league power rating, and strong non-conference opponents power ratings. The better Louisville does, the better the win looks for Marquette.  Even root for teams you lose to non-conference, as, it will be a better loss, etc...

In this instance, Louisville is more important because even though MU needs league to do well, Louisville is one of MU’s better non-conference wins of the year. MU needs that a little more than one of league teams to win in this situation.

Do we want St. Johns to beat Villanova today or would it be better seed wise to have Nova win and then Marquette beat nova next week? Obviously this is a seed for tournament vs outright big east title. Whats more important?

Cheer for St John's, because they aren't catching us in the standings.

+1...and IF that happens, and MU takes care of business next week against Nova, for all intents and purposes(barring something disastrous), MU will win the BE.
