Eagleitarian Warrior (intensional misspelling).

Playing homage to both names, while making clear we are all about being equal and respectful.

Still less ridiculous than the Gold.

For the life of me i don't understand why you and other bright people around here are unable to put things in context. We don't even know some of the horrible things we're all doing today because they haven't been defined as horrible yet. Geesh.

Very wise post.

I was going to respond to TAMU when he said he had done racist things in the past.

He would be one of the last people on Scoop that I would ever think that of. I’m guessing what he thinks he may have said or done only seems racist because of the way things are now as I would be shocked if he intentionally acted in a racist manner.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I am a human being. All human beings say, do, and think racist (and sexist, creedist, homphobic, etc) things from time to time.

Intent has nothing to do with it. Most racist things in America are not done intentionally. That doesn't make them not racist.

I also have intentionally said racist things in the past. My main intent wasn't to be racist, it was usually to get a laugh or fit in with a group, but I knew they were racist when I said them. I think if most people are honest with themselves, they have done the same thing at some point in their life. If it wasn't a racist statement then maybe some other kind of bigoted statement or action. The important thing is to own it and try to do better in the future.

Affirmative action?

It’s interesting that people against Affirmative Action who just love to speak out against it, never had a problem when minorities were openly discriminated against in education or job seeking.

Only when minorities were given a fair chance at an education or for a job did these people decide to speak out against how minorities were being given all of the advantages. These are the same folks who think that it is the white race that is suffering in the USA.

Fair??
I believe much of the concern with affirmative action is it is inherently unfair.  Two wrongs do not make a right.

What does justice for a few centuries of systemic (and in many ways, ongoing) oppression look like?

Why don’t you answer Pakuni’s question?

I'm going to guess because it's a really difficult question to answer. I've spent a lot of time thinking about that and don't know. Reparations seems like the most obvious answer, but when you are talking about not just generations but centuries, how do you create equity for that? And how do you do it in such a way that doesn't seem punitive to people living today who, while they benefit from the system created around them, weren't involved in the system's creation and likely don't even realize the benefits they receive?

Free education, interest free loans on homes and cars, tax exemption, maybe do that for a century and you might get close? Though honestly, most likely the worst people to decide how that is handled are people from the classes that have had their fingers on all the levers of power for the duration of those centuries.

No.

But one could argue that justice is giving people from disadvantaged backgrounds breaks on all sorts of things.  "Affirmative Action" in its initial form, was an attempt to do that.  Its formulaic approach meant that it wasn't really going to meet the goals above, but I am perfectly OK with an ethnic minority with financial need but a worse academic record being admitted to a college ahead of one of my children.  My children have plenty of choices and will live a good life regardless.

No!  We can't lock this thread, but Topper can save it.

Topper, use your god-like moderator powers to move all of the off-topic stuff to a new thread in the Superbar, and let the usual suspects go at it until it needs to be locked -- probably another couple of days.

But save this thread so it can be necroed next October 12.  And the October 12 after that...

What's next?  Are we going to lock the NM thread because people can't control themselves?  It'll be anarchy!  Topper, do not let them destroy this thread!

My kids aren't losers - at least I don't think they are.  However they aren't perfect and have parents who think adversity isn't that big of a deal.

And as for me losing my mind, at least I'm not the guy who tells the same jokes and uses the same schtick going on a decade now, and doesn't have the self-realization to figure out that it stopped being funny nine and a half years ago.

Jesus. Threads like this honestly make me leave MUScoop for long stretches. It's like clockwork that some people just can't stop pissing and moaning about this change. Do I like it? No. But it's not going to change, and it just makes this board seem perpetually stuck in the past to every year mark the anniversary of the change. Can't wait for the day when this is no longer a topic. Lock this thread up and/or move it to Superbar in perpetuity.

Direct from Merriam-Webster:
1either
adjectiveei·ther\ˈē-thər also ˈī-\

1 : being the one and the other of two : each flowers blooming on either side of the walk plays either instrument well
2 : being the one or the other of two take either road

So EITHER

You called Sutlan's kids complete losers

or

You said Sultan was losing his mind

EITHER way, you are insulting another poster. Looking back through this thread, you were the first one to throw a personal insult since this thread got necroed.
