The Pope

Marquette just announced the passing of Greg 'the Pope' Johnson.  We saw him most recently at the alumni game during the 100th celebration.  Kind man with a big heart.  Rest in Peace, Pope.

Extremely saddened by the passing of Greg "Pope" Johnson, one of the great personalities in #mubb history & a fixture on the @MarquetteU campus his entire life.  Details on services being confirmed.
Goal is National Championship

RIP Pope.

The other guy in the 2nd photo is "Johnny" of rec-center hoops fame.  I believe he was / is also an exec at NML?  Anyone know if he's still around?  We had some epic games back in the day.

Love the story about Greg going back to school and getting his degree 40 years after leaving Marquette. Hopefully his example inspires countless others.

First met The Pope over 45 years ago and am very sad to hear the news. My wife and I were with Pope the night of our first date in 1985 at The Gym Bar. Many great memories of a very unique guy.

The Pope was my basketball camp coach back in '96, and he was hilarious to a 8 year me back then.  I remember walking from the old gym to the annex for lunch and he would always try and scare some of the kids by smacking a stop sign with his hand and pretending to hit his head.  He got multiple kids each day and it never got old.  He was a great personality and I will certainly miss his presence. RIP!

Was still hooping in my day (2011-15) and just to echo a couple of others here, he was not fun to play with.

RIP Pope. A great guy gone too soon.

In my student days I used to play ball at the Rec Plex and enjoyed Pope plugging in a CD player in the men's locker room and livening up the place with his selection of jazz and more as he got cleaned up from his workout.

Here is a brief write up about his returning to school after 40 years to finish his degree - https://stories.marquette.edu/a-promise-to-finish-6e6621f5f120

Speaking of Johnny, the Marquette Tribune did a write up of him about 8 years ago - https://marquettewire.org/3762473/tribune/tribune-sports/schmidt-the-godfather-of-marquette-basketball-nb1-dp2-mn3/

I hear Johnny still hoops it up at the Rec Center on select weeknights and Saturday afternoons.

Johnny lived at the Rec Center in the early to mid 90s.  He always wore these shoes with springs/lifts under the toes, I guess they were supposed to help his vertical.  Maybe, but they looked super awkward.

Yeah, Johnny was a constant presence at the rec center during my time (99-03).  Every game he came near eventually devolved into a loud, 5 minute argument.  What a gem.

I worked at the Rec Center from 83-87.  Saturday and Sunday afternoons Johnny Miller was the guy for basketball.  We had a Rec Center reunion and Johnny stopped by, and fit in great since everyone knew him.

I played hooops plenty with Johnny at the Rec. Late 70’s early 80’s. I saw him last year at the MU BBQ. He said he has been playing steady over 40 years. I asked him if he got his first assist yet. His friend shook his head and said “no”.

I had a first date at the Ardmore which resulted in three kids. PBR in action.

btw, we are working with GE's Waukesha and Jenbacher guys on co-development of our H2 technology so I'll be in and out of Milwaukee over the next year. Buy me dinner at Real Chili?

theBabyDavid's mother has been to MU game gatherings at Buckley's in Queen Anne and has become a genuine Warrior fan not the least of which is because of the cool unis. She is however highly skeptical that my irreverent self could have possibly been educated at a religious-based school so she insists we attend an MU home game this season. Expect Crash, Cricket and theBabyDavid to be there this season.
