Would have preferred he chose Michigan, as they probably would have stopped chasing the Rocket.

No, but it is rather unusual.

How does an Arizona kid end up at Marquette under Wojo? How do Minnesota or Michigan kids end up at Marquette under Wojo? Would you be wondering the same had Carton committed here? Is it that different?

Difference here is that Carton is from Big 14 country in Iowa but he was considering 3 Big 14 teams from 2 or 3 states away (OSU, UM and IU).  Huge loss for Iowa.  When was the last time Bucky lost a big name home-state 5 star recruit to a fellow Big 14 member(other than that weird Stone situation).

Five-stars anywhere are uncommon, but in recent years there have been a number of kids crossing state lines in the Big 10. Michigan took Jordan Poole from Wisconsin and Zavier Simpson from Ohio. Michigan State got Nick Ward from Ohio and Jaren Jackson from Indiana. Indiana brought in Jerome Hunter from Ohio, Justin Smith from Illinois and Race Thompson from Minnesota. Even Wisconsin brought Reuvers in from Minnesota. Plenty of those kids cross state lines.

I don't think this was necessarily THE reason, but something I have been told about Carton from the beginning is that he is a huge college football fan. Hard to beat Ohio State out when it comes to college football.

IU and Purdue lost Jaren Jackson to MSU.

Minnesota loses kids to UW all the time.

Iowa lost Utoff to UW before he transferred back.

Indiana lost quite a few kids under Crean ......Illinois loses kids all the time.

Some kids are drawn to the home state school......others not so much.

Yup, but I noted that Carton was looking 2 or 3 states away in the Big 14.  Your examples are almost all just across the adjacent state line.

Dude, really? It's the 21st century. We have things like cars, planes, and televisions. We even have the Internet where you can live stream internationally. And you think someone going 400 miles instead of 200 is a big deal? Come on.

Let's just say this is a very limiting set of circumstances you've presented here.
Kid has to live in a Big 10 state, but commit to a Big 10 school not in his home state. And not only does that Big 10 school have to be outside his own state, it can't even border his own state. Oh, and he can't be just a good player, but he has to be one of the few five-star recruits that commits to a Big 10 school every year. Also, he can't be named Diamond Stone.

Stan Johnson, which he had a relationship with.

It's way effing different, Holtmann has been on the job for 13 months. Unless OSU assistants have some relationship with him, I don't obsess over recuiting like you.

The point is kids often leave home to play. For a kid that grew up in Big 10 country, likes college football, and hasn't had any of these schools recruiting him for all that long (Carton's first high major offer was from UW-Madison in June 2017) it doesn't seem that surprising or revolutionary.

Recruit signs with school 400 (?) miles away, with a coach that has only been there for 13 months, and was never really predicted to go there until very late in the process. That better for you?

Examples then. Be sure to nail that 13 month coach with a  top 25, highly recruited player.

Will Wade, hired last year by LSU, landed two 5-star players in the Class of 2018. One is from Orlando (696 miles from Baton Rouge), the other from Roselle, New Jersey (1,351 miles).
One committed to LSU six months after Wade was hired. The other waited 10 months.

Ah.  You decided to add the top 25 criteria in there, which was oddly missing up until now.  ::)

But it turns out this is pretty easy.  In 2018 alone both Bryce Drew and Will Wade landed top 25 players outside their geographic area.  Granted they weren't there 13 months.  I believe the commitments were about 15 and 16 months after they were named.  But they were in the same stage of the recruiting cycle that Holtmann is in now - the summer after his first year at a new school.

It simply isn't that unheard of when you have experienced coaches new to a program and with playing time to offer.

His high major recruitment started 13 months ago. So Holtmann has been there as long as he's had high-major programs in pursuit. So no, I don't see how it's relevant.

So what, you want to start an investigation into whether it was a dirty recruitment because he didn't go to a school that was one stateline adjacent to Iowa? I really don't get why you're so bent out of shape about this.

Well then spell out your brilliant point, because the idea that Carton going to school a couple states away being some kind of bizarre coup sounds pretty idiotic.

And I think the word you're looking for is cognition.

Can't believe anyone would ever want to leave Iowa.

That was the major pitch by the University of Iowa when my definitely not college athletic daughter visited Iowa.

Iowa didn't have a chance on this one. The young man obviously wanted a school with a strong NCAA history that could display his wares on national television deep into March. Ohio State offered that, plus the chance to start immediately. I have to believe Michigan would have been a better choice, but I'm not the one making the decision.

Of course, Marquette would have been better than either of them, but as I said, it isn't my decision.

Stop telling people what to do.

It was a misguided point made without an understanding of history or how college basketball works.  Now PTM and you want to keep digging your hole.  Odd hill to die on.

PITT has not signed any recruits for 2019 or 2020.  Chapel has offered many, many players, as well he should because his team roster is in disarray.  He has yet to close the deal on any of them and lets wait and see how he does with actually getting commitments.

You forgot to mention how challenging filling a 2018 roster @ PITT is this year and he brought in the best class PITT has had in years including one 4 star and possibly a 2nd yet to commit

Absolutely.  Pitt actually has two three stars and a four star committed,  The three stars have signed, the four star has not.  Problem is they had like 10 scholarships open and I believe they will have at least 7 freshmen on the roster.  They also have St. Johns transfer Malik Ellenson next year.  So, good start I guess, but the program is in shambles and Chapel has a severe uphill battle on his hands.

A decent comparison would probably be another head coach that, like Holtmann, had HC success at a previous stop. How did John Calipari do with his first class at Kentucky? 2008, I believe?
