pump the breaks
« on: March 05, 2019, 06:55:03 PM »
spent yesterday and today at work catching up on some mu pods and some scoop. holy moly pump the breaks people from both sides.

first for the pods. one pre nova where were asking if the be trophy will be in the building so we can celebrate if we win. what? settle down. nova has earned more respect than that over the last 3 years. then post nova game another is still proclaiming “this team is going to be a be champ.” did we forget that it took a MIRACLE shot AND a 53 point performance to beat creighton game 1? and a missed 3 point foul that could’ve given seton hall a lead inside the last minute of the game at home? and that georgetown has proven to be able to beat the top be competition more than once this year? nova was not losing post mu game. there is A LOT of work left to do to win a be title. you’d thing the last 5 years would give the fan base a bit of humble pie but evidently not. got a BIT ahead of ourselves here. we have a solid team. we do not have a dominant unbeatable team. and no be teams are pushovers this year.

and then theres scoop post creighton. chartouney needs to start because markus cant play pg? huh? theo needs to come off the bench? what? we use markus too much? uhh...? weve had huge success this year. change everything weve done because we lost one game we were supposed to lose and then had one dud of a game?

back to the grind. not a good enough team to take our opponent for granted but certainly not time to push the panic button.

Don’t know that there’s a need to synthesize both ends of the spectrum and treat it as if the MU community falls on one side or the other. 90% of us take a fairly balanced approach to this team.

We’re very good, sometimes great. Can we be great for a 3-week stretch here? We’ll see!

Agree with this wholeheartedly!  Our record and ranking in the polls probably got a little bit ahead of where we actually are as a team.   Everyone thought we would be much improved and no doubt expectations were high at the start of the season and that this would be a make or break year for Wojo, blah blah blah,  but IPHO this team has exceeded expectations by a pretty significant margin.   Wojo has definitely “made“ it and with the addition of Koby and Greg next year, we’ll likely be even better next season.  As successful as the season has been, Porky  never beleieved we’re a top 10 team.  That we were ever ranked that high this season  given the degree to which we’ve toiled in mediocrity for the last five years is a SUBSTANTIAL accomplishment.   While they could bow out early in the only tournament that matters, they’ve also proved that they’re more than capable of making a deep run.  Enjoy the ride folks!

As the podcaster who was talking about the getting the trophy in Philadelphia if MU beat Nova, I stand by it. I also stand-by the seemingly whiplash effect of a week later hand wring about whether the team will win again. If we had talked post Nova, pre-Creighton I would have talked about how everything was still good because MU just ran into bad luck/questionable officiating as MU was in the lead with 3 to go and just couldn't close...we hadn't seen them have that issue before. However, we've now seen it twice in a row where MU couldn't close, had difficulty with TOs and seemingly was out of sorts. It's not a trend yet but we'll see on Wednesday, it could be a trend. Maybe the book is out on how to guard Markus and take the rest of the team out of it? Maybe it was two bad games and we're still a top 15.

Time will tell.
