Buzz Williams staying true to what he did here... somehow people forget games like these

You're right. Can't remember any "games like these".

fjm

Not surprised by the loss. DenverMU must be wicked annoyed his boy Buzz lost.

Having said that, I'm actually really angry Varech lost.

Yea.  People tend to excuse some of those collapse games due the the fact he got us to Sweet 16, Sweet 16, Elite 8, and a 6 seed with a team of 7 players, 2 of whom were under 5'10", and not one player over 6'6"

But..a brutal loss by VaTech and Buzz tonight.  At least he has the wins over Number 1 Virginia and Number 3 Duke to fall back on.

What a collapse.
Much like the Louisville meltdown when buzz blew a 20 point lead with mu back in the day

Please. Lost to a 22-10 Florida State team by one point. Were rewarded for a 20 plus win season by having to play Washington in Northern California and then were totally ripped off by the officials. Lost to a ranked louisville team by one point on the road.

what does that have to do with losing a game after building a big lead?

It happens to everybody particularly against a good team on the road.

Yep. Even established coaches who are amongst the best in the business have epic collapses. That's why freaking out when a younger more inexperienced coach does it doesn't make much sense.

All of which we blew massive leads. If we don't blow that lead then you're saying we beat a 21-11 FSU team. We weren't totally ripped off there were like two bad calls down the stretch we blew that game. Yes we lost to a ranked Louisville team after up 18!

No one is ever going to watch a big lead evaporate and think that it's OK. Just because it has happened, doesn't mean it should be expected. I'm not sure what VaTech's win probability was tonight with 15 minutes to play, but I'd guess it was in the 80s or 90s. That loss is going to make any fan mad. And that's perfectly reasonable.

Absolutely agree. But holding up a single collapse as a reason to fire a coach is not reasonable, nor is saying it should never happen or is unacceptable.

Coach still taking it out on MU.  That stinker didn't help us, and it helps Notre Dame.  What a punch to the gonads.

How we lost was the issue.  Playing Washington in Northern California? I'm sure there are plenty of graduates there, but that's still 850 miles away.  A game we should have won. The Louisville game I thought Crean was coaching, so many nail biters with Louisville over the years.  Florida State loss took a half to cough up, not that big a deal.

I think people need to stop thinking a 17 point lead with a half to play is some insurmountable amount to come back from. It's not 1954.

It's a game you should absolutely win.

It was also 21 with under 14 minutes left. That should be an insurmountable lead 100% of the time.

27 point swing in 14 minutes.

1. We had beaten a ranked Michigan the night before and then ran out of gas against another ranked FSU team the following evening.

2. In the Washington game the officials called the game very close in the first half putting MU in foul trouble despite their lead, and then when Washington put on full court pressure in the second half, the refs swallowed their whistles. Not an embarrassment against what was essentially a road game against a good team.

TallTitan34

I don't think Florida State and Washington were that big of deals. Those games happen occasionally to most teams.

Louisville. That was bad.

Also, I believe we were an over seeded 6 seed and Washington was an under seeded 11 seed. It was more of an 8/9 game. I think the world of college basketball is no lead is all that safe.

+1

That entire season was made up of "games like these". Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory over and over and over again. That 2-5 start to Big East play included 4 losses we absolutely could've won and gave away late. I still remember watching that first Villanova loss at Highbury and when we seemed to have it locked up, the bartender asked me why I was so nervous. I said "they're gonna give that lead up, because that's just what they do." And sure enough, they did.

To their credit, they either figured out how to win or just took advantage of a softening schedule, but it sure came back to bite them in the ass against Washington.

If you are talking about the Orlando tournament game, it was the 3rd game in three days. I was at that game.  We were short handed. They were exhausted. There was nothing left in the tank.  They could barely walk after that game.

They could walk enough to build a 16(?) point lead and choke it away with about 5min left. Look I'm not making indictments about that team. My point is Buzz had a propensity for building big leads that would disappear at the end of the game and we'd end up losing and somehow all the people who are hating on Wojo forget that.

Buzz never seemed to care about conference tournaments.

Early on with Crean's players, Buzz was pretty good in MSG. Later on in his tenure at Marquette, Buzz was very poor in MSG. Decidedly mixed record.
