From the mouths of babes...
« on: January 18, 2018, 12:53:38 PM »
My nephew asked me a question this past week that I admit I didn't know how to answer with any certainty. If this has been kicked around here already, apologies. But, do it for the kids...

Has there been any talk regionally or nationally amidst the pundits about Markus Howard going pro after this year? I told the boy that, while Howard did put up 52 and tosses in additional 30+ games often, he also trots out occasional clunkers (like De Paul) to indicate he's a star, but still developing. I think he's a lock to stay for his junior year and further develop for a possible departure before his senior tour. But, hell, I can't say for sure if he's an NBA prospect at his height.

What else should I tell the kid? Besides "...Never trust someone in red and white unless it's Santa. And, even then, pull the beard."

It's been discussed quite a bit.

I don't think anyone legitimately think Markus is going pro after this season.  His height is always going to be an issue for NBA scouts, and by all accounts, he takes his schooling seriously.  I think Markus will be a four year player, but one that will have just turned 21 on draft day following his senior year.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Yup, just can’t see it after this year. Maybe tests the waters to get some feedback. But it’s very clear that at this moment he lacks the point guard skills for someone with his height. There was a play I believe at Nova where against some token pressure he dribbled the ball off his own foot. Not saying he can’t get there, but as of right now he still needs to develop more as a point guard before M2N becomes a reality.

Height and defense. Don't see him overcoming those barriers. But if he starts averaging over 30 points a game like he was for that three game stretch he will get serious looks.

Would add point guard skills given the height.

Yep.  He will get his shot and just might surprise people, but I'm guessing it'll be after 4 years.

Just spent considerable time looking at almost every mock draft for 2018.

Did not find one in which Markus was listed in first or second round.  Not one, if someone finds one, please post.

Don’t know what it’s starting to get real is all about, unless someone shows he is getting significant draft reviews.  One site said he was measured at 5ft 10 without shoes.

I 100% agree that he's too short, doesn't play D and cannot break a press.  That all said, Jonathan Givony who has a pretty good reputation in the NBA has him in the 2nd round right now.

Someone on here sat next to Markus' parents on the flight home from Maui. IIRC, they pretty much laughed at the suggestion that he may leave early.

I don't think Markus is going anywhere unless he becomes a legit lottery prospect after next season.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Here is the text and top 50 listed.  The writer used to operate DraftExpress which came to be known as the best Mock Draft and Draft info site out there.

"Who are the best prospects in the 2018 NBA draft?

You can find our updated top 100 rankings here throughout the season.

This top 100 differs from our mock drafts in one crucial way: The top 100 is an overall ranking of all draft-eligible prospects in the 2018 NBA draft, regardless of whether or not we believe they are likely to enter -- or ultimately stay in -- the draft.

The mock draft attempts to project which players should or will make themselves eligible in April. And down the road, it will also take into account NBA teams' needs, the draft order and things we've learned about front office tendencies.

The same methodology applies to all of the other rankings we will maintain throughout the season: NCAA freshmen, NCAA sophomores, NCAA juniors, NCAA seniors, point guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards, centers and international draft prospects.

What a ridiculous comment. We know recruits are checking Scoop for validation before committing; it's only logical that they do the same when planning their career that is theirs and theirs alone.

If you've got the upside Markus has got, you don't leave school to be drafted in the 2nd round.
