Uh-oh ... FT% DOES matter (at least every once in a blue moon)
« on: January 23, 2018, 10:33:26 PM »
Well ... what do ya know ... FT% DID matter in Tuesday night's Kansas-Oklahoma game.

Late in the game, with Kansas up by only a few points, Sooners coach Lon Kruger had his guys repeatedly foul Udoka Azubuike, the 7-foot KU center who is a 41% FT shooter.

Azubuike missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and then missed a pair on each of his next 2 trips with KU in the double-bonus. He went 0-for-5 down the stretch (and 1-for-7 for the game) as Oklahoma rallied.

Hack-a-Udoka won the game for the Sooners. Kruger used the strategy because he knows how to read a stat sheet, the one that said Azubuike was a 41% FT shooter.

JB will tell you that getting to the line is more important than percentage made. The proof is that if he had been fouled 15-20 times in the last 5 minutes or so, he would have made enough free throws to win the game.

#FakeNews

#FTsNoMatta isn’t in reference to late game, situational extremes. You know better.

The truth is eFG% reigns supreme. Oklahoma’s eFG% of 57.0 to 52.1% was simply too large to make up in other aspects of the game (eg 5 fewer turnovers)

Please stop the lies. Sad!
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

If Udoka had made even 3 of those 5, Oklahoma would have lost despite its eFG%.

How did he get into this country, anyway? #Sendthemhome

And if Kansas had made one more bucket or denied one more bucket earlier in the game they would have won. If Kanas had grabbed one more offensive board or denied one offensive board they could have won. If they had one less turnover or caused one more turnover they could have won. If they had gotten to the line one more time or kept Oklahoma from getting to the line one more time they could have won. If the ref wasn't daydreaming about the leftover barbecue sandwich waiting for him in his Motel Six which kept him from noticing a travelling call they could have won the game.

Focusing in on FTs as the reason they lost the game is silly. As silly as you think #ftsnomatta is.

Individual FT% mattas in specific late and close game scenarios. This has never been denied. It changes your strategy  and Hack a Shaq (or Hack a Doke) is a legitimate strategy in these scenarios. What never significantly mattas is Team FT% on the outcome of a game.

Agree on all of this.

Why do you think I included the bit about the ref daydreaming about BBQ?
