Name Stays; Mascot Goes

What a concept, Holy Cross.

Now all you kids, get the hell off my lawn.

P.S.  For the record, the name "Crusaders" is light years more offensive than "Warriors."  I'm honestly a little surprised that they didn't change the name, too.

Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

I don't know.... these days I get the distinct impression that it's way worse to mock indigenous peoples than it is to murder them.

What is surprising is that Holy Cross doesn't seem to be taking a payout from any Islamic casino owners to make this happen.  Suckers.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

This just seems backwards.  The Crusader name is what they seem to imply is offensive, not the mascot, but yet they keep the name and drop the mascot.

Agreed. Unless maybe they think muslims are offended by really big Uggs.

Florida, much less the panhandle, isn’t exactly a hotbed of cultural sensitivity

I believe that FSU has the blessing of the Seminole tribe (as does Utah with the Ute tribe).

This is true, the Seminole Nation in both Florida and Oklahoma support the use by FSU but I get the tomahawk chop reference.

I know Utah broadcasts at least one message from a leader of the Ute tribe on the jumbotron at every game.

Good to know. I know that I cringe when I make it to 1-2 Braves games a year while in ATL for work. I always equated the two, but that's a marked difference

IIRC, FSU only has the blessing of like 3/12 tribes.

I'd be fine if Marquette kept the Golden Eagles name and got rid of the Chicken.

Same here. Or at least gave it a redesign. Never been a fan of the current eagle logo. I'd also like to see us update the MU logo, at least removing the yellow "shadows." I think it would be a cleaner, more classic look.

You mean the Furry Bird.

There's very few feathers on that bird. If we're eagle, make him/her wear feathers! All feathers!

So did North Dakota from the Sioux. But we know how that ended up.

Once again, NCAA demonstrates that they have no problem imposing their will on the lower tiered schools while letting the big boys do whatever they want.

That's not true.

The NCAA allowed some schools to keep such nicknames provided they received tribal support. But in the University of North Dakota's case, the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe endorsed using the nickname and logo, but The Standing Rock Sioux's tribal council didn't.
