Why you might not know that 2024 was America's safest year since the 1960s

"An overwhelming majority of Americans, 64 percent, believe that crime increased across the country in 2024, according to a Gallup survey conducted late last year. An overwhelming majority of Americans are wrong.

On Tuesday, August 5, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released its comprehensive report on crime in the United States for 2024. As crime data expert Jeff Asher noted, not only did the report reveal that overall crime was down substantially in 2024, but crime "fell in 2024 across every category and population group." Specifically, it "was down in all seven categories of crime across all 10 population groups that the FBI measures."

Moreover, the new FBI data shows that both violent crime and property crime are at their lowest level since the 1960s. In 2024, there were about 349 reported violent crimes in the United States for every 100,000 Americans. That is the lowest rate of violent crime since 1969."
If you think for one second that I am comparing the USA to China you have bumped your hard.

I mean, this is great and all, but really I believe my dentist more than "statistics" when it comes to crime.

Milwaukee contends with flash flooding, state fair and airport affected, with more rain expected Sunday - CNN - 2 hours ago

QuoteFloodwaters rushed through Milwaukee's fairgrounds, airport and roads Saturday, as historic rainfall led to flash flooding, water rescues and an early closure of the region's beloved state fair. With more rain forecast for the region Sunday, officials are urging caution on the roads.

The National Weather Service in Milwaukee issued several flash flood warnings for the area, which will remain in effect until Monday. Milwaukee received 5.74 inches of rain in just hours Saturday – a month and a half's worth of rain, setting a new daily record for the region. The Milwaukee River hit a record high crest of 11.19 feet. The previous record was 10.48 in July 2010.

Storms are continuing Sunday, with the potential for flash floods and street flooding, the National Weather Service office in Milwaukee said. The area is forecast to pick up an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain on top of what they have already received.

Any flooding on the MU campus?

I went to a comedy club last night and one of the comedians asked the audience a few questions about alcohol intake. When he asked who didn't consume alcohol at all, a surprisingly high percentage of those in attendance applauded.

FWIW, it was a mostly Gen Z crowd.

No snark from me ... just something interesting I observed.

Why? We had to wait outside the club before the doors opened, and numerous Gen Z aged folks were out enjoying the evening in a popular Seattle neighborhood filled with restaurants, bars and things to do (Capitol Hill).

I am the farthest thing from an expert on Gen Z behavior. Do they routinely hate having fun in public and interacting with others? Is that a thing? Definitely didn't seem to be the case last night in the very limited sample I observed.

An article came up iny news feed this morning about the USA having smallest percentage of those who say they drink alcohol since 1939.  Especially younger people who are worried about the health side effects.

I know alcohol is bad.  I also know that life should be lived... responsibly, of course.

Americans are also working out more than ever before.

The increase in the % of 35-54 and 55+ beginning roughly in 2020 surprises me. After mid thirties, why would people change their opinions? Maybe due to more research challenging the  "there are some health benefits to alcohol consumption" theories  that have been around for decades. I believe most medical professionals, even IF they concede some benefits (cardio in wine drinking?,) would argue that on balance, alcohol is not good for your body in a number of ways.

Agree with Hards. Ice cream is not good for the body either, but damn! Having some once in a while is great for the taste buds and makes me happy. My cardiologist would almost certainly prefer that I avoid it altogether. Claiming it has no ill effects is pure delusion.

I know a fair number of people who used to drink, but don't anymore largely for health reasons. The reason could mean anything from caloric intake to "I can't sleep when I drink."

I also don't think it's in isolation from the other link I posted above that people are working out more as well. People are living healthier lifestyles.

Agree with some of the reason being healthier lifestyles but also wonder if that is enough to account for the c.28% reading/reply in about 2018 to 48-50% now. That is one Hell of an increase. In any case...glad to see it. I enjoy an occasional beer or glass of wine and drank more when I was much younger, but not heavily. I'm very happy now with being a very light drinker but have no plans to eliminate alcohol altogether.

The survey question wasn't if *any* alcohol is bad for your health - but if "one or two drinks a day" is bad for your health.

I personally can't imagine drinking one or two drinks a day.
