Monumental figure in the medical field. He performed the first coronary artery bypass surgery in 1963 and had an incredible number of inventions leading to artificial heart transplants and the heart-lung bypass machine.

OK, now I feel like an idiot.  For reasons I can't begin to explain, the NYT article about his death showed up on my Facebook feed yesterday.  I read the article without looking at the date.....
