Started a GoFundMe to Match the fine the Big East is imposing. In their statement, the Big East noted it would go to the charity of Marquette's choice. We seek to match that donation to that charity. All donations are appreciated!

Donated $50 my self (poor alum) if you think I'm a fraud.

MU should pick the Blue & Gold fund.

Skitch

I saw somewhere on twitter that the fine money is going to Camp Hometown Heroes.

So wait, to prove you're not a fraud you just gave $50 to yourself?  Hah.  That's rich.

You might have the best intentions, but I would discourage people from "funding" you unless they know you personally.  For a couple reasons.

1) You could just pocket the money - and then none of it goes to charity.
2) If people are donating to charity, they should do it themselves, and take the tax deduction!  Instead this would just give you a personal $5k deduction (if you really did use the money for charity).

Oh, and here's the Camp Hometown Heroes donation page :)

Yet MU is using it in its athletic department e-mail summary of the game (and on their Twitter feed) and in today's B and G fund donation pitch.

What are they using?  Yes, it's true there's a 5K fine, and yes it's true that it will be donated to Camp Hometown Heroes directly from Marquette.

This guy is offering to take money from us and donate it to  Camp Hometown Heroes himself - completely separate from the Marquette donation.

$5k?  That's how much Scoop makes in subscription fees every hour.

I get they're separate. Just thought it was ironic that photos of the court storm in e-mails got yesterday from athletic department and B and G fund, and on AD Twitter feed. If this allegedly a no-no, why being used to promote MU athletics? Either have the fine and don't use it for promotional purposes, or don't have the fine and use it promotionally.

My name is plastered all over the site, it would bring plenty of personal shame if I pocketed the money that wouldn't ever be worth 5k.

Not just online, there was a massive billboard ad on I-43 South saying "We Are Marquette" with Luke standing in the middle of the rush crowd. They're capitalizing on this.

Not sure why this is "ironic."

$5k is a drop in the bucket if it fills more seats for the remaining games and gets MUBB back in the public eye in Mke.  it has been a while since we had exciting, meaningful games that the casual fan might come to.

a court storming that is all over social media, every news outlet, sportscenter, etc. is fantastic free advertising for MU.  you couldn't buy even a sliver of that exposure for $5K.

Benny B

Seriously?!?

Nobody here is lambasting Marquette for attempting to capitalize on this (well, except that awful t-shirt idea), nor is anyone lambasting the OP for setting up his own fundraiser.

The point is this:

Listen, if all y'all want to take the money you were going to donate to charity and let me donate it for you - at no cost to you -   I'll happily take the tax deduction, too.  I'll even go get bonded and insured if I have to.

Even if the OP has every intention of giving money to CHH, at best it's extremely shortsighted and at worst, it's good ol' fashioned tax fraud.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Lol..give the guy a break.  He is trying to do a good thing.  Maybe he didn't think it through all the way, but don't roast him for it.

I won't be donating, but I think it was an admirable idea with the right intentions.

Didn't even think about a $5k deduction. Can you claim the deduction if it comes from GoFundMe?

I'm all for MU promoting the living bejesus out of this. Love the essentially long free ad on FS1 after the game with the students on the floor, and Raftery and Brando interviewing Wojo and Reinhardt. But if this enough of an offense that it generates a fine under Big East rules, shouldn't it also be against the rules for them to use it promote? If it's supposedly wrong, it's wrong. My beef isn't with MU's promotions department at all, it's with Big East officials for having their cake and eating it, too.

Not that I'm promoting this, but yes.

GoFundMe goes to you personally.  They should probably send you a 1099-MISC with it as income, but they cleverly avoid that with the "personal gifts" tax clause.

After that, it's your money, and if you donate it, you get the deduction.

I get your point, but I think it's against the rules because of safety issues, not because it's unsportsmanlike or anything like that. I don't have a huge problem with it.
