Early indicators for the Game 7 finale have the total audience going as high as 40 million viewers. If that is the case, it will rank as the most-watched baseball game in over 15 years — and potentially longer. It also makes it the most-watched individual telecast this year outside of the Super Bowl.

Last night's historic Cubs victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 of the World Series averaged a 51.5 rating in Chicago, which means about 2 million local TV households tuned in.

That made it the most watched Chicago baseball game ever, surpassing the previous record of 47.1 set by Game 7 of the 2003 National League Championship Series.

The viewership for the 8-7 extra-inning win far surpassed that of the White Sox's 2005 World Series clincher, which posted a 42.5 average rating.
