All-time "If he could have only done it again. . . " team.
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:20:45 PM »

How about a team where a player had one good game that left us wondering what might have been if he could have pulled it off with any consistency:

--Amo's game against South Carolina most definitely earns him a spot
--Joe Nethen had a career game against Cleveland State in 1987, where he scored 23 and pulled down 12 rebounds.
--Mike Kinsella's surprise trey shooting versus Pitt in 2007
--Polo's game against Morgan State--21 points, 9 boards
--Charles Brakes career game versus Prairie View--19 points, 6 boards, 5 assists

Anyone else belong on the team?

David Diggs and the Great Alaska Shootout Championship game.  I think he went 5-5 on 3s.

Novak vs Louisville or Novak vs UConn. I don't remember the exact stats or dates, but both games he was sick. I actually think the Lousiville game was his best. The guy couldn't miss. Granted, Novak during his career was very consistent, but in those games he was aggressive and looking for his shot more. I think if he did that throughout his career, he could have put up even better numbers.

Novak had a GREAT senior season and was very consistent. He should not be listed as an example.

Great call above on Diggs. His 3's were the difference in that game. Funny, both Alaskan Shootout championship games featured a one and done career performance by an MU player.

Hopefully, Dwight Burke does not appear on this list in a few years. Would be nice to see him have a few more UW type games.

I nominate Marquette84 for that one decent post he had back in 2004.

If you read my post, I said that Novak was consistent. I just think in those two games we saw what Novak was capable of if he looked for his shot a bit more and was aggressive on the offensive end. I think in a lot of games he just sort of floated on the perimeter vs. demanding the ball. I think a lot of games, we wanted more from Novak.

41 points, 16 rebounds.  Called the best individual performance of the season in the NCAA.  I think it qualifies, because most of these performances aren't 33.5 points and 10.1 rebounds above their best season's average.

Lucas fouls out and Jerry Homan comes off the bench and leads the team to victory and a berth in the 1974 final four.

If you are going to include Novak's game against Connecticutt than you would have to include Wade's triple double against Kentucky. Hoverever, I do not think any player that makes the NBA should be included on the list.

How about John Cliff's 37 pts against Memphis or Jared Lovette's 13-13 free throws in the big win versus Loserville.

Wasn't a great offensive game by any means, but how about Brian Barone leading MU in scoring with about 10 or so points in a win over Cincinnati in about 2000?

I'd throw Chris Grimm in here for his defensive contributions at the end of his senior season a couple years back against Hibbert and Georgetown, and Gray and Pittsburgh.

--Grimm vs. Tucker
--Todd Townsend hit something like 4 threes (plus one that didnt' count) before the first TV timeout against DePaul one year.

Barone v. Cinci was in 2001 i think.  We won around 50-49 or something like that.  My buddy who i went to games with at the time and I hated barone and never wanted tim to play -- we much preferred the lil' man Cordell.  But barone had the game of his life against the hated 'cats.  fantastic.

Another vote for Grimm against Tucker in 04--that has to be up there for recent players.  a rare start for the reaper and he did a great job keeping a body on tucker the first 10 minutes of the game and tucker was not himself the rest of the game.

I couldn't stand Barone either at the time to be real honest. Met his father at the C-USA tourney in Louisville in 2001, which changed my tune. Everytime I see a kid pump fake instead of shooting when he's open from 15 feet and in I think of Barone.

Todd Townsend.

Todd had a great Blue & Gold Classic either his freshman or sophmore year.  I want to say his frosh.  Named to the All-Tourney team, etc.  Threw down some highlight reel dunks, filled up the stat sheet.  I was super pumped to have him at MU and thought at the time this would be an NBA-type player after 3 years.

Mr. drummer, can I have a rim shot?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Ah, you beat me to Jared against Loserville his junior year.

Why has no one mentioned Jake Thomas. He scored 50 iirc in his freshman year. And put up 30 once this year.

Also David Cubillan went 6-6 from three one night his senior year. He could have been something.
