Hadn't seen this name before
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:59:14 AM »
From Peach Jam notes on ESPN.

• One of the real surprises is talented big man, 6-9, 225-pound C/F Mike Broghammer ( Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), a member of the Howard Pulley Panthers. Broghammer is a tireless worker, a force on the boards and has an effective jump hook. He needs to extend his shooting range but is a terrific competitor. Broghammer is hearing from: Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Harvard, Gonzaga, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Minnesota, and others.

Mike Broghammer, PF (6-9, 223)
2009 Mound, Minn. / Hopkins

What a pleasant surprise to watch this young man emerge as somewhat of a sleeper this week. Broghammer competed at a very high level against big name competition. He dropped 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in an overtime win vs. Xavier Henry, Daniel Orton and a very talented Athletes First team. It was not so much the number of points Broghammer scored, it was the way he did it that was so impressive. He does all the dirty work for his team he rebounds on both ends and when he goes to the offensive glass, he does not accept box outs. He defends the low post and plays with intensity and passion. He runs the floor hard every time. He's sneaky athletic and can finish above the rim in transition. His range extends to about 15 feet, and he can also face up and attack the lane off the dribble. He get's to the free-throw line with regularity and has a good touch. He's not fancy, but he gets the job done. His game and body are still developing, but he has the heart to be a high major recruit in the right system.

Anyone know anything else or possibly have seen this guy play?

Introducing Broghammer...(what a great heavy metal band name)

Mike Broghammer - Hopkins

Mike BroghammerJoining his high school and AAU teammate on the all-conference list is sophomore Mike Broghammer. The 6-7 big man is still developing physically, but he has great potential which is already garnering division one offers.

GH: Besides North Dakota State, has anyone else offered you?
MB: Green Bay just offered me. That’s all the action I’ve got, Green Bay and NDSU.

GH: What are your thoughts on Tubby Smith being hired?
MB: I think it’s a great hire. It’s great for the Gophers and I can’t wait to watch it this year.

GH: Have you had any contact with the Gopher’s coaching staff?
MB: I have not had any, they have not contacted me at all.

GH: Would you be interested in Minnesota?
MB: I wouldn’t mind, it’s a good option, but I don’t have a high interest for Minnesota.

GH: How come?
MB: I’m going to aim high, and if I come low, that’s how it goes, I guess.

Looks like his Howard Pulley Panthers were last season's 17U champs for the Pulley Invitational. Teammate of UW's Jordan Taylor.

And look who was a member of the 16U champs! ;)

I don't know. Too many similarities to Ryan Amoroso for me.

Based on this link:
http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=3148346

I find two things interesting.
1) 2009 recruit - is someone leaving? I doubt it.
2) The CSU connection - An old target of our new assistant coach?

Not arguing with you here but can you expand on this other than: white, 6'9, and easily converted last name to nickname?

Minnesota, too. I know it's a bit of a stretch.

I don't think it's that big of a stretch.

Leitao is seeking guard's commitment
Men's basketball coach Dave Leitao is hoping to land a commitment this month from point guard Jontel Evans, a 5-11, 180-pound rising senior at Bethel High in Hampton.

Evans also has a scholarship offer from Marquette, but he'd like to attend a school closer to his home and is seriously interested in Virginia. Evans and his parents met recently with Leitao and other U.Va. officials in Charlottesville.

Also a football star at Bethel, where he made the all-Eastern Region second team at tailback in 2007, Evans plays basketball in the spring and summer for Boo Williams' powerful 17-and-under AAU team. That team played for the Nike Peach Jam tournament title last night in North Augusta, S.C.

"Hopefully, he is ready to make a decision in the very near future," Bethel coach Craig Brehon said Monday.

With Evans at the point last season, the Bruins advanced to the state Group AAA championship game for the first time since 1993, when their stars were Allen Iverson and Tony Rutland. Evans was named second-team all-region in hoops, too.

Evans is built like Jameer Nelson, Brehon said. "Strong legs, strong chest, strong arms."

my guess is most of this info is outdated and these guys are no longer being recruited except as a total contigency paln.
