NIT Bracketology: Feb 10

MU as a 6 seed as of 2/10:

Not sure if a lower seed team gets a home game, but it's a start!

I'm not giving up on an NCAA bid...until we are ousted from the Big East tournament we have a chance...but, the disappointment of not making the big dance would certainly be softened if we ended up playing Bucky in the NIT and beat them for a second time this year...or, (drooling a bit), if somehow Virginia Tech got in as well and we hosted Buzzard and his boys for an NIT game in Milwaukee.

Hate talking about the NIT because this team is no doubt a top 35 team  this year. If they ended up a 6 seed in that bracket they would run through that bracket like a hot knife through butter. They have played big boy after big boy and would play byu, st bon, rhode island. Child please.

Really? There's an NIT Bracketology?

The upside of being in the NIT:

The boys would be playing locally.  No chance of that if they make the NCAA.

It would be awesome if they played  in the Al.  Should be plenty of room for real fans given so many of y'all think an NIT bid would mean that the team is a complete failure.
Have some patience, FFS.

Probably not... once you get away from the NCAAT and NIT, it starts costing the schools money to participate in these tournaments, and I don't think MU is going to pay to be in a post-season tournament based on their declined invite to the CBI a couple years ago.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

There is no upside, chick. The NIT would be an abject failure and an embarrassment to the program. In other comment streams, folks are talking about ending their fanhood of MU because they can't take it anymore. We will miss those loyal fans so much, and an NIT bid might actually result in some ex-Scooper suicides. See the hell that Wojo has wrought? Oh, the humanity!

Top 35 - REALLY?

You are watching a different team than I am.  This team has its moments, but they lack any and all consistency to be anywhere near the top 35 in my opinion.

I disagree Benny.  That team 2 years ago had been picked to win the BEast, was Senior laden, and Buzz had a full step out the door.  It was time to move on.  There was absolutely no benefit to be gained.  This year is 180 degrees different.  And it'll be a helluva lot cheaper than Italy.  I'd guess they'd go in a heartbeat if invited to the CBI or Vegas.  But let's shoot for the NCAA and cheer like h*ll if they get a home game in the NIT as a consolation.

First I've heard of this. Do they expect teams to pick this over the NIT, or is this more of an alternative to the CBI?

Teal, right '82?  I agree with chick.  I'd absolutely love a NIT game in the Al as a consolation prize.  Heck, I'm quite confident that if they end up in the Vegas tourney chick will insist that we go and make a long weekend of it in the sunshine.

MUST be the latter.  With the auto-bids, locked in TV, etc. the NIT is still quite legit.  Not what it was in 1970 but still legit.

I realize in most years Marquette would turn down most non-NCAA tournament spots, but this year's team should take what it can get.  Any game, tournament, or postseason experience would do wonders for this young team (specifically, Wilson, Cheatham, Cohen and Wilson).

Any additional games they can get, they should take without hesitation.

A solid run through the NIT would be a great result for this year and this team.  Good trajectory.  Just b/c we have Providence's number doesn't mean we're world beaters.

A UWM (Ken Pom #125) vs. MU (#103) game would be a very competitive NIT game.  Plenty of venues to choose from to play the game.

Heck, MU alone has three home courts:  The BC, the Al, and Allstate.

Creighton is a 2 seed here. Georgetown a 2 seed.  We have 3 remaining games against those teams.  That's our 2 seed!!!!   Postseason home game!

Certainly, that played a role.  But I think you already hit upon one big detraction - that Italy trip wasn't cheap, and MU's basketball budget is already one of the largest out there.  I disagree that there's something to be gained by going to the Vegas 16, if there was a chance that playing in Vegas might convince HE to stay another year, then sure, 180 degrees... but let's be realistic here.  At most, I'll give it 90 degrees, because if the point is to help the core of players further develop as a team, you're not really doing that in Vegas because the very core of your corps this year won't be in the core next year.

Not to mention, the pre-season and holiday stuff... those are events they can sell to recruits, and so call that a cost of doing business.  But I guarantee nobody on this team was promised a Vegas 16 tournament during recruitment, so by turning it down, you're not going to be breaking any hearts.

Also, keep in mind that MUBB doesn't fly commercial... they need a few boosters to subsidize the cost of the charter, and frankly, I think Easter in Vegas is going to be a tough sell.  I'm not sure that MU is going to want to pick up a $50,000 tab just to fly back and forth to a no-name, start-up tournament with no exposure (at least some of the CBI games are buried on a cable channel or ESPN3 somewhere).

From what I gathered reading a handful of stories about it last night (1st I'd heard of it, too), they're thinking of this as definitely ahead of CBI in the postseason pecking order. A mix of .500 or slightly better teams from top 6 leagues and teams around 20 wins in the better mid-majors. Kind of the teams that used to make the back-side of the NIT before they started letting the small schools that won their conference regular season but not post-season tourney into the NIT.

I don't siagree with your point here, but I don't know how you could say the core of this team won't return. Every single player could return! Sure Henry's probably gone, but the entire rest of the team returns. There would definitely be something to gain by playing as many games as possible this year.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

As it pertains to CBI/Vegas, that's like refusing to participate in a December 15th football bowl game.  2 extra weeks of full fledged practice.  More games together as a team for EVERYONE with the possible exception of HE. And all for the estimated $50K?  Plus remember that Vegas is purportedly working out some TV money to offset some of that cost.  Yeah, I think they go.

But let's not get there okay?  NCAA or more likely NIT.  Let's do that.   :)
