I know the popular thing is to joke about Crean but it doesn't make sense here. He was better than any other Marquette coach at recruiting shooters. The height thing, absolutely. But not shooting.

Really if you wanted to joke about a coach who didn't recruit height or shooting, it would be Buzz Williams. We all know his issues with getting bigs, but outside of his first two seasons, we had atrocious shooting teams. And what coach recruited the players that were leading the team in 3P shooting for the first two years of Buzz's career? Besides DJO (in Buzz's second year), they were all recruited by TC.

Uh...well, I will agree that Crean and KO were the two Marquette coaches who recruited some shooters after the 3-point rule was implemented in 1986. And Crean has a large number of people on a list that began in 1986 because he was there for half of that time during his tenure.

But Al and Hank recruited better shooters. Period.

Hell, if there was a game of HORSE between Al's best and Tanned Tommy's it wouldn't be close.

Look at the names on your list - Dom James, Mo Acker, Dan Fitz, McNeal, and Cubillan? The Dream wasn't even close to being among Al's best shooters and he would mop the floor with those five.

It's easy to write history when you eliminate a large part of the narrative. One could argue that since 1945 Germany has been among the most pacifist nations in the world. But that doesn't tell the whole story.

I agree that Novak is phenomenal and deserves a spot on the all-time list of MU greats but there are a lot of Al's guys I would take as shooters before Diener.

So in a hypothetical game of horse, Al's and Hank's guys could beat TC's guys? Maybe. I have no idea. Without any stats, that is an opinion. Possibly a true one. But that doesn't change the fact that TC had some great shooting teams. It was a joke that didn't make sense. It happens to the best of us. Now if you had said Buzz, THAT would have been funny and true.
