I always chuckle at the "guys named..." type comments. I mean, couldn't any names be substituted in there had they not panned out? Couldn't Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Love, or Kevon Looney be just as apt for such comments as Dwight Buycks or Vander Blue?

Either a) the LAT didn't connect the dots between Vander and Dwight or b) they did and found that connection to be irrelevant.

Take solace in the fact that (b) is about 100x more likely than (a).

Fair point. Career averages of 7.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.8 apg is pretty pedestrian. Granted he was only here two years, but him making the NBA is Greg Stiemsma levels of incredible.

But that's the point.  Buycks and Vander haven't done anything at all yet they got time on the Lakers, while Dirk and Love have proven themselves.  We'll see about Looney.

More pointing out that the way it's written indicates the name is somehow the problem. Their accomplishments (or lack thereof) would seem like more of a concern than what their parents had scribbled on the birth certificate.

Depends on your reference point.  I'd say Jimmy Butler was less of an NBA prospect than Dwight the first time he arrived on campus.  At graduation, not so much.
