You'll never hear that from me...I like the "larger" waters MU swims in as far as offering kids(Like Warley, Etienne, Brown etc) with much better offers than this kid has gotten. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. That doesn't mean this kid won't be a good player by any stretch, but I know for most offers from say Wake, Xavier, Providence are impressive offers, I think they are OK offers, but doesn't scream to me someone MU needs to offer because schools like that have "so he must be good enough for MU". In other words, I feel as though MU should consistently have better classes than schools like that. Call it what you want, that's how I see it.

Except 2 of the 3 programs you listed have been consistently better than MU for the past 7 seasons.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

And THAT is a major problem, wouldn't you agree? No one should ever consider those two better programs than MU.

Absolutely not, though it's not the first time that Providence has been a better position than us, it won't be the last either. Just gotta make sure that they don't overtake us like UW (as much as it hurts to admit)

Here are some data points for You to Consider relative to Xavier and Marquette. Xavier since 1985-86 when Pete Gillen came aboard has been an extremely strong and consistent program.  They have their own on campus arena that sells out. Not saying they are above MU , but certainly not below MU.

I agree its not ideal.  Marquette is definitely a better program that Providence, but they haven't been lately.  I think over the last 15-20 years, X is right there is with Marquette.  X has been to the NCAA tournament 15 of the last 17 seasons.  It's a very good program.  Outside of the Al days, X is every bit as good of program as Marquette.

I also think you have a somewhat inflated sense of what Marquette basketball is.  It's a really good program.  But you think/wish it was elite, which is really hasn't been since the 70s.

Gonna leave it at that - recruiting thread should be about recruiting and I won't contribute to taking it more off topic beyond this post.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

So Arizona just landed a pair of brothers from lithuania, giving them 6!!! International prospects for the 2020 class...that is absolutely unheard of. Talk about a complete change of recruiting philosophy. Is it that Miller thinks the $$ trail can't be followed as easily internationally??  8-)

Speaking of which, I mentioned it before, but I wish the international market was one MU would explore/use. So much talent over there.

I always wondered why Xavier in the past several years has had more success than MU. This predates Wojo, so it is not just Wojo. I never been to Xavier, so I have no idea what their campus and facilities are like. It could be location. I do not think MU being in Milwaukee is a plus. Milwaukee is blocked off from the east coast by Lake Michigan. Xavier simply is surrounded by a larger recruiting area. Parents want to attend their kids games, so a school that is a few hours drive from home has a recruiting advantage. I think Xavier has a built in advantage over MU, because it is located in Cincinnati vs. Milwaukee.

When I was at MU I would have traded every second of every minute of every day to be a basketball player or treated like one. The players choose to have the "sweet life" of a DI basketball player and free tuition and stipend.

Reasonable people can disagree about NCAA rules but let's not portray these athletes as poor "cattle" used for entertainment.

This is even more dribble from you than usual, oona?

I mean, what did it say about Roy Williams when Trey Wertz -- a kid whose father went to UNC and whose dream school was UNC -- chose instead to transfer to Notre Dame?

What did it say about Mike Anderson when Jesus Figueroa chose to leave St. John's?

And so on and so on and so on.

What does it say about every coach who misses out on a recruit or who loses a transfer?

Parents want to attend their kids games, so a school that is a few hours drive from home has a recruiting advantage. I think Xavier has a built in advantage over MU, because it is located in Cincinnati vs. Milwaukee.

Xavier (and Butler) have had pretty flawless transitions between coaches, which prevented mass turnover one offseason (causing a couple of classes to balance things out).  Butler had one disastrous year with Brandon Miller, who was gone after that single year (still isn't public what happened - he quit coaching altogether).  When we went from Crean to Buzz, there was little changeover, we kept winning (and got several straight classes of quality players).  From Buzz to Wojo was a solid disaster, which caused a multiple-year rebuild (which neither program has really had to go through).  Even with Steele at Xavier, he had one 19 games his first two seasons (likely more had the BET/NCAAT/NIT played out).

Both programs were very consistent in the 2010's.  MU was, unfortunately, just very up and down.  Hopefully, the 2020s are more consistent.

Since the mid 1980's, in order, Gillen, Prosser, Matta, Miller, Mack.

Ohio is a big, highly populated state (7th in population) where hoops is popular. Cincy borders states where hoops is also very popular. (Kentucky, Indiana etc)

I personally don't treat them anyway at all, I have nothing to do with them other than watching them play. Which oh by the way, you also do...yet, I suppose you're so "appalled" that they are treated like "cattle" that you'd be not paying attention at all it's so bad, right?? They are treated so poorly they should really get human rights lawyers and sue the NCAA, ya know??
