Some say we're in the lead for NC State transfer Kyle Washington, 6-9 forward.

Damion Lee was a legitimate possibility.

Looks like we're now going after 2 class of 2017 recruits that have prior ASU offers.  The hire could really pay off.

PG is definitely a priority for 2017. As of right now, we will have three scholarhships available for 2017. I would expect a PG, a wing, and a big. Of course, transfers and departures happen so we most likely will see four or five scholarships available or 2017.

You can give all the scholys you want out in California, you want transfers, wait till they spend a winter here.  California kids have no idea about winter.  We will really see how good the new coach is and how many kids want to follow him.

He convinced Haanif to come here. I hear Florida is pretty hot.

I think this a vastly overestimated factor in recruiting. Distance from home? Sure. Weather, not so much.

Just make sure they visit before November!  I agree, distance is a factor to, but MU has a lot to sell right now so you never know

Seriously, has MU really had such trouble landing kids from warmer climates over the past 15+ years?

Jimmy Butler (Texas)
Jae Crowder (Georgia)
Haanif Cheatham (Florida)
Jamail Jones (Georgia)
Joe Fulce (Texas)
DeMarcus Minor (Texas)
Carlton Christian (Florida)
Chris Otule (Texas)
Juan Anderson (Cali)
Karon Bradley (Texas)
Ousmane Barro (Senegal)

Obviously the Midwest is, and likely always will be, MU's base, but it's hardly some impossible task to recruit a player from someplace warmer than Milwaukee.

In 2008 my MU buddies and I went on spring break in LA and stayed at one of the guy's sister's place in Santa Monica (I wanted to say on 8th street). It was awesome. We flew out there on a Friday and that Sunday was selection Sunday. We lucked out and got to play Kentucky in Anaheim. My buddy was a manager at the time so he hooked up tickets and we got to see Crean's last win as our coach. We had to fly out before that brutal Stanford loss, but overall it was fantastic trip. Also went snowboarding at Big Bear and drove to ASU for Paddy's day. Great times.

What was the last "warm weather" NCAA team to win an NCAA title?
Arguably Florida.

How many in the past decade?
2, but just one team: Florida (2006-2007).

Before that? Arizona (1997) and UCLA (1995).

The average low temperature in Durham from Dec-Feb is about 29 degrees, which is the same as Philadelphia.  Highs are closer to 50 for the three months.

My parents in central Florida see plenty of highs in the 50s and see low temps in the high 20s and 30s regularly throughout the winter. Is NC (outside of mountainous areas) ready for a significant (3+") snowfall? If not, that's not a cold weather state.

Eh they all have automated sprinkler systems that spray warm water when cold, basically creates a warm mist around the trees.  Back in the day, they used to have to drive out in the middle of the night and light kerosene heaters though.

Bigger threat is greening, aka a foreign tree parasite that kills trees within months, entire groves wiped out in the last few years.  100% Florida OJ will be quite hard to come by in the next 3-5 years.

Unfortunately a disease called greening is about to make citrus a thing of the past in Florida, not cold weather. Selling now is likely a sound choice given the outlook.

Well Kansas is a cold weather school.  Kentucky and Louisville aren't terribly warm either.

But really, kids aren't going to these schools due to weather.  UNC, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and Louisville are traditionally strong programs lead by Hall of Fame coaches.  The weather might be a nice side benefit, but I think it is pretty low on the list of why prospects make that choice.

Furthermore, just naming national champions is an incomplete picture.  This year, two of the Final Four were from "cold weather" states.  Look below:

2015: WI, MSU
2014: WI, Uconn
2013: Michigan, Syracuse
2012: Ohio State, Kansas (?)
2011: Butler, Uconn
2010: Butler, MSU, WVU (?)
2009: UConn, Nova, MSU
2008: Kansas
2007: OSU
2006: None
2005: Illinois, MSU

Weather hardly seems to be a factor.

MU is a very attractive school  to recruits, and their parents, and once enrolled kids really enjoy it. If weather is a priority they will self select out of the process.  Many high school  students are looking for a high quality experience in an urban setting and we offer that.

Really like him. Malou is an odd story/path, but he can play.

Australian, but Sudanese.. versatile big F. He declared for the NBA draft a couple of years ago.. probably is 21 now? Was going to prep school out east.. injured, went back to Australia for a year... played at a crap prep school in Iowa... was looking at Southern Idaho.. wound up at Yuba.. Yuba had a personal fav of recent years - Julian Welch.. solid program..

I think with a guy like this you worry about eligibility and the like, but he has the potential to come in and be a impact guy for a HM

Howard will be on campus this weekend.

Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein
2017 guard Markus Howard (Findlay Prep) will take an unofficial visit to Marquette on Saturday, source told @CBSSports. Five-star prospect.

Does anyone know if he's in town for an AAU event?  If not, It seems to be good news that he's paying his own way from Arizona.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Hopefully he can scrimmage against the coaches.

If Wojo could pry this AZ kid away from AZ-ASU-UNLV it would be a major recruiting coup.  Nice that he is visiting though....

Markus Howard Ready to Make Move to Las Vegas
Recruiting Thursday, July 23 9:32pmBy Mike Grimala

After scoring 32.4 points per game as a sophomore for his Arizona high school team in 2015-16, Markus Howard decided he needed a change of scenery and a step up in competition. So the 5-foot-11 point guard is packing his bags and heading to Findlay Prep.

“I wanted to be challenged more,” Howard said. “I wanted to play with the best players and against the best players in the country. So it was real easy to make that decision because Findlay Prep is a national powerhouse.”

It’s an intriguing development from UNLV’s perspective. Dave Rice offered Howard in the spring, just a week before Howard announced his move to Findlay Prep, so the Rebels appear to have an inside track. Howard has also joined the Las Vegas Prospects, an AAU team that features several other UNLV recruiting targets, including Troy Brown, Oshae Brissett and Charles O’Bannon Jr.

After playing with the Prospects on Thursday in the Las Vegas Classic, Howard said he’s just starting to dip his toe into the recruiting process.

“I’m very open to any school that’s willing to recruit me,” Howard said. “Probably around the beginning of my senior year or the end of my junior year, I’ll start to cut my choices down and begin to make my decision.”

In addition to UNLV, Howard said he’s also hearing from Arizona, Arizona State, San Diego State, Baylor, Indiana, Marquette, Wichita State, Nebraska and Oregon. For the Rebels, it’s been Rice and assistant coach Todd Simon maintaining contact, according to Howard.

Howard doesn’t arrive in Las Vegas full-time until late August, so he hasn’t had a chance to survey the UNLV campus yet. But he’s smart enough to give Rebels fans what they want to hear.

“I know it’s a great history with coach Tarkanian building that program,” he said when asked what he knows about UNLV. “And that national championship run they had in the 90’s was awesome with Larry Johnson and Anderson Hunt. I’m very familiar with the program.”

Howard is a deft ball-handler with a natural knack for finishing in the lane despite not possessing elite athleticism. While his size limits him to the point guard position, Howard is most definitely a scorer. He averaged 2.8 assists per game last year, but shot 47.2 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from 3-point range and 87.0 percent from the free-throw line.

He’s rated as the No. 31 player in the Class of 2017, and he counts his scoring mentality as a strength.

“I’m a very explosive scoring guard,” Howard said. “I can also lead a team and I’m a very good defender as well. I’m a point guard that can score.”

Ha, ha, ha...

Everyone knows North Luzon Institute of Technology is where you want to go.

Northern Luzon is too cold. If you can find Central Luzon it is anything but frigid.

Stan Johnson has already paid immediate dividends since being hired.  The fact that we are now getting access to several top recruits from the west coast speaks volumes.  Excellent hire by Wojo, IMO.

I am optimistic, but I will wait until we land one to declare that it is paying dividends

After what MU plunked down for Isaac Chew to not land big recruits, I think this is a wise move.

Markus Howard told me he's very close with #mubb assistant @MUCoachJohnson. Marquette wasn't on his radar until Johnson was hired.

Chew was the guy who got JJJ. I know he hasn't yet lived up to the hype, but he was the highest rated recruit (going by RSCI) of Buzz's tenure. He was also the lead assistant on Ahmed Hill.

The way he talked about Stan Johnson he definitely seems to have a very strong relationship with him.  We just might have a shot on this guy...

I hope we do. We'll be in bad need of a PG by 2017. Will also need to find a big man somewhere.

Really? Traci will be a Junior.  Sure we'll need and want one to groom but it's not like the year Travis got hurt and we couldn't get the ball over half court.

I'm off the opinion that you need to recruit a PG at least every other year. It's the hardest position to learn at the college level. You want your future starters to have an opportunity to be a backup for a year or two.

Like, for example, Diener did behind Cordell Henry.

A circumstance that led directly to one of the most shameful moments in the long, proud history of Marquette hoops. Who didn't feel the sting of humiliation as we were thrashed soundly by Western Michigan on our home turf?
