question: anyone use ghostery?
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:19:36 AM »
I installed the ghostery extension on firefox to block scripts.  I did it primarily because JSonline has over a dozen running, and too often when on that site the page locks up on me.  Just wondering whether anyone uses it, or any similar products, and whether there are any negatives to using it.

I've been combining Ghostery with AdBlock Plus for a number of years now.  I don't see ads, popups, or anything similar, and can even safely use sites like First Row Sports without having to worry about malicious scripts.  If you have all scripts and cookies blocked in Ghostery, you might very occasionally run into some usability problems with different sites.  When that happens, I just pause blocking or go through each tracker being blocked on the page and figure out by trial and error which needs to be temporarily re-enabled.  The notification panel will often tell you which blocked scripts might be "breaking" the page.

I use Chrome .. never had a problem with the JS site locking up on me.  (I've used AdBlock, but recently switched to uBlock.)

Why did you switch?

I read an article about uBlock vs. AdBlock, specifically that uBlock uses far less CPU and RAM than AdBlock.  -- Admittedly, this article was about UB vs. AB on Chrome.  No idea if the same holds true with Firefox.

I often have a lot of tabs open, so my memory usage is high .. uBlock basically does the same stuff, so I gave it a try.

How are they different than using private browsing which for me kind of accomplishes the same thing?

They are entirely different than private browsing.  Ad or uBlock are to filter out advertisements.  Private browsing does no such thing, it just flushes your porn history, cache, and cookies, once you close the browser.

Finally.  I knew all this Scoopin' would pay off dividends eventually.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
