Barnes not expected to return to Texas
« on: March 27, 2015, 01:51:44 PM »
Barnes to DePaul?  St. Johns?

Is Buzz a candidate at UT?  Probably not if Barnes won't acquiesce to UT's AD demands--can't image Buzz would get more leeway.

Bazz to UT, wojo to VaTech, wardell to MU, purnell to GB, Barnes to Depaul.

Wojo to UT.

I mean, if Buzz goes to UT you think we could get Med Hill back here?

Nope.  It wasn't MU that he liked, really.

Doubt it.  Like it or not, he picked Buzz over Wojo.  If anything, it's more likely he'd follow Buzz to UT.

I should have tealed that. But honestly if he moved on me twice, I'd be pretty miffed as a recruit. Interesting to see what CTB PC (Coach Team Buzz Panic Room) does in this situation.

DePaul should've grabbed Howland if he really was interested.  With SJU, Tennessee and Texas suddenly opening up, DePaul suddenly looks a lot less attractive to HC candidates.

Although I would be very entertained seeing Buzz leave VT after just one season.

It appears that ASU may have been enough to distract Bobby Hurley from DePaul.

It's already in the cards.....just look at the PR mission Bert was on once the VT season ended.  He's laid the ground work to justify the move and will absolutely jump if offered.  Just a question if UT wants him.

Taint gonna work out for Berty boy. The smart play for him would have been to leverage his top 15 recruiting class at MU and stay the last year. And then jump all over this.

But now, he's the coach for the last-place team in the ACC with a recruiting class outside the top 25. Not sure how Texas can pitch that one to the boosters (if there even are any bball boosters).

Of course, that all assumes MU wouldn't have sent him packing had he not left.

I don't think Marquette would have been all that much better this year had he stayed.  Maybe .500 in conference.  No NCAA bid.

Right. Not saying WE aren't better off that Bert left last year, I'm just saying that BERT would have been better off had he stayed another year and been competitive with a good class. Then he'd be in a position to leverage that into a job at Texas or...anywhere other than Va. Tech.

That's actually part of the reason there might be concern.  The boosters may have been reluctantly willing to bring in one minority coach, but may be against both major coaches being minorities.

It's interesting to compare this coaching search to UCLA's last search when UCLA couldn't get any big names (including Shaka, IIRC) interested.  Is Texas now a higher profile program?  Is Texas now a blue blood of recent vintage?

Texas has a better upside IMO.  Some of the limitations on the UCLA program, such as air travel, were documented here last year.

I still think you won't see Shaka or Marshall there.  I think you will see an out-of-nowhere, sitting, successful coach.

I recall laughing at VCUI sider when he said the school was spending money on their facilities.  The company I work for does commercial construction and we have two projects on VCU's campus both for their athletic program.  We will see if it's enough to keep Shaka.

When we no longer have to impress people, but are living to please God, we will have freedom to be who God created us to be, & enjoy life.

I wonder when Buzz will start enjoying life...?

So why would Buzz leave?

On Friday, I reported that the Tennessee job is Rick Barnes' if he wants it: http://tw.nbcsports.com/lL5

Sources: Rick Barnes not expected to return to Texas
Rob Dauster Mar 27, 2015, 3:36 PM EDT

Rick Barnes is not expected to return as head coach of the Texas men’s basketball team, multiple sources told NBCSports.com.

Barnes met with athletic director Steve Patterson, who told him that he needs to replace his coaching staff or risk being let go, sources confirmed to NBCSports.com. Barnes is not expected to meet those demands.

All three members of Barnes’ coaching staff have been a part of the program for a long time. Russell Springman has been with the team since 2001. Rob Lanier coached with Barnes from 1999-2001, and then came back to Texas in 2011. Chris Ogden played for Barnes before joining the Texas staff in 2008.

247Sports.com was the first to report that Barnes is seriously considering stepping down.

The Austin American-Statesman reported on Thursday night that Patterson and Barnes have met face-to-face twice since the Longhorns were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

Barnes is the winningest head coach in Texas basketball history, having led the team to the Final Four in 2003 while churning out NBA stars like Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge and T.J. Ford. But in recent seasons, prior to signing Myles Turner, Barnes has struggled to reel in the elite talent coming out of the state of Texas. The Longhorns surprisingly made the NCAA Tournament in 2014 — a run that earned Barnes a contract extension. But this season, Barnes led a preseason top-ten team into a No. 11 seed and an opening round tournament exit.

One potential landing spot for Barnes is Tennessee, sources said, with one source adding the job is “absolutely” his if he wants it. Barnes’ wife, Candy, is a Tennessee alum.

The list for replacements, should Barnes opt to leave, will be long, as Texas is one of the top ten coaching jobs in the country. Gregg Marshall, Shaka Smart and Buzz Williams are among the names that will likely be involved.

Marshall, Smart, Turgeon, Pastner, & Miller have all been contacted by representatives of Texas to gauge interest in open position.

How great would it be if Turgeon took the Texas job and Stone decommitted.  Badger fans would be eating their words real fast, and their coaches daughter would be issuing a really quick Twitter apology and deleting quite a few Tweets.

The coach that reportedly turned down Alabama may not be the top target for the job he is reported to be most interest in.

Texas is targeting VCU's Shaka Smart, not Wichita State's Gregg Marshall, according to a report from 8News WRIC Richmond in Virginia.

Texas fired longtime coach Rick Barnes Sunday, creating an opening that has further complicated the Tide's search for a coach to replace Anthony Grant, whom Alabama parted ways with March 15.

Reported to be alone atop Alabama's wish list, Marshall told the Tide that he is not interested in their opening, according to a report from Yahoo! on Saturday, a report that said Marshall is interested in the job at Texas.

It is unclear if Marshall would have interest in the Tide if he does not get the job with the Longhorns.

Barnes to Tennessee?

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12588541/tennessee-volunteers-close-hiring-rick-barnes-former-texas-longhorns-coach

It's all but done, "barring a late snag" is the only caveat at this point.

Well, unlike St John's and DePaul from our conference, Tennessee got their hire right.  It must feel like Christmas in Knoxville to get a guy as accomplished as Barnes.

You can add Virginia's Tony Bennett to the list of people contacted by Texas' search firm. He probably could have had the job, but said no

It must surely be a coincidence that Williams didn't know what "tweeter" was when he coached Marquette, however, for the past 369 days since he's been employed by Virginia Tech he's about as active a profile as you'll find in a current head coach.

I don't remember exactly when but Buzz started his twitter account awhile before he left Marquette. I want to say it was the summer of 2013.

He had someone sending almost all of his tweets when he was here, probably still the case.  He would have a "^bw" at the end if it was actually him typing it.  Like what the President does, since he's just as important now.

Who does he have dirt on?  I get being Pitino's son, but he hasn't exactly set the world on fire at Minnesota.  Is an NIT championship that impressive these days?
