Has anybody heard about this "controversy?" What a joke. He berates a player for acting like a jackass towards the other team and says, "I'm going to kill you!" Are we to believe there are people who thought that was a legitimate threat?

It boggles my mind how intrusive sports coverage has become to the point where coaches cannot discipline players without it being thrown on SportsCenter with some solemn tone about "going over the line."

This is about as contrived a story as I've ever seen.

GooooMarquette

Agree.  Press looking for a story.

Wonder what the press would have said about Al if he had a microphone in his face every time he something to a player....

MerrittsMustache

- Player consistently talks trash and acts like a jackass.
- Coach consistently tells player to knock it off.
- Player once again talks trash and acts like a jackass.
- Coach yells at him for it.
- Coach becomes the villain.

Yep.  And if the player talked trash and Stallings didn't do anything, the press would be claiming he doesn't keep his players disciplined.

We are such a soft unnatural carnal knowledgeing nation it is pathetic.  Stallings was exactly right to do that.  My dad or coaches would have knocked my head off right there in line.

Clint...your words are needed again....the pussification of America and when did it start...

I'm not mad that Stallings chewed the kid out.   I question the location.    Take him back to the locker room, take him aside, and chew him out then.    Don't do it in the handshake line.    Because that is as hypocritical as spanking your kid for hitting other kids.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

He did it in the handshake line because he was demanding he apologize.

LAZER

Seems like most people agree this isn't a big deal, I haven't really seen that many people outraged or calling it a controversy.

wadesworld

Maybe LaChance will feel threatened and look to move back and play for the private hometown school, ai'na?

Ooooh, Clint. You're such a manly man when you're doing make-believe.

He should not even have to apologize...that's what chaps my arse.  He should be applauded.  I read the comments under that story, at least a bunch of people get it, but a bunch sure are limp noodles.  Good Lord.

I think you need to add some context to who "He" is.  I'm assuming the coach?

Yes, Stallings

I generally agree with all of this, although "kill" was an unnecessarily harsh word. Just IMHO.

Yeah I don't think the coach did anything wrong as it obviously wasn't a literal statement, but where would you even come up with those words?  I would think of a lot of different things to say to the kid before I said "I'm going to kill you!"  I'd think a lot of coaches might yell "What the eff are you doing?  Get off the damn court!" or something along those lines before they go to "I'm going to kill you" (which, again, obviously wasn't meant literally).

I agree...but still find it odd that we're more offended by the "kill" reference (which we know wasn't meant literally) than we are with f-bombs and the like.

I agree. I know people obviously do not mean it when they say it, but it always makes me cringe. I do think it is the media making something out of nothing

As TACPs in Afghanistan we often said, "I'm going to kill that guy..." then called in an A 10 to do just that.

ESpN embarrassing themselves as much as ever this morning...just opened college game day with a 13 minute rambling, nonsensical discussion about this nonsense...and that's exactly what it is. To make matters worse, they brought out confirmed idiot Stephen A. Smith (I am 100% certain he would have been nowhere near that set if they didn't plan to talk about this.). Absolutely ridiculous.
