Here is the account of the game that the Marquette U. Archives sent to me.  They really made an exception in allowing me to post that to YouTube.  I think it was a humanitarian gesture.  I told them that nobody on that team has any video of them playing basketball at all.  So they are all going nuts being able to see this game.

Great that those guys are able to see video of themselves playing, and great work by you to get it to happen!  Thanks again Bill!

IIRC, it was John Wooden that told Lew that he needed to develop a hook shot.

People forget that he was as dominant in his 20's as MJ. He went for 30 pts/16 reb/ 4.8 assists/ 4 blocks over his first 7 years in the league.

I don't forget. I LOVED Kareem. When I was a kid, I taught myself how to shoot a jump hook. I used to announce it, in Marv Albert's voice, as I made my moves.

"Kareem with the sky hook ... YES!!"

Obviously, as an East Coast kid, I didn't know who Eddie Doucette was.

I know Marv is loved on the East Coast, but Eddie was great. Many great expressions and nicknames.

"Toaster" was the lane cuz guys were jumping up and down all the time; "Land of the Giants" was another nickname for the area around the basket; "Bango" was for when a guy swished a long jump shot - usually Jon McGlocklin or Brian Winters; "Sky Hook" for Kareem's shot; "Boulevard of broken Dreams" was where a guy drove the lane and had his shot blocked.

The "Twin Towers" were Marvin Webster and Bill Cartwright; "Cement mixer" was Dick Cunningham; "Greyhound" was Bobby Dandridge; "Speed Bump" was Paul Mokeski; and Pat Cummings was "Road Apple" (although I don't remember if that one was from Eddie or just the guys I hung with).

There were a lot more as well that I can't recall off the top of my head.

Thanks, G.  Usually when I post on non-Tennessee boards, I get ripped!  LOL  But not on this Christmas morning!

If you guys are ever by the library, please give your outstanding archivists Katie Blank, Susan Stawicki, Amy Cary, and Michelle Sweetser a big hug for me.  Those women really made the day for a couple of us gringos and a ton of people in Chile.

I heard Doucette a lot when I was at Marquette. I still think Marv is the gold standard, but I always enjoyed listening to Eddie.

I was there.  My season tickets go back to 1965.  Mentioning Lucas who only played varsity for two years at Marquette, I remember the 1971 freshman varsity game  that always began the season.  Freshman Lucas was playing against some great players and did very well.  I still remember the wish that Chones, McNeil and Lucas would be our forward wall some day but it never happened of course.  There were some great freshman games before the varsity games and many fans like myself would go down early to see the opening game.  I think that ended after Maurice's freshman year when the rules changed and freshman could play on the varsity. I remember a great MU Illinois freshman game.  It might have been when Luke was a freshman.

MU, I guess that is Jim Chones?  Never knew he played for Marquette.  I remember him with the Lakers.  He was tough.

I found this article on the Chile game, but the box score does not come through.  If anyone has a box for this game, I'd love to see it.

Don't forget the one and only David "two tots toasted" Haines! Was the news straight man for Larry the Legend and the most melodramatic local news guy I ever heard in my life. "Two tots toasted as your Milwaukee fire department responded...."

I remember "hot lead, in the head, now he's dead" or something like that.

Best freshman game I remember was MU vs ND during the 67-68 season. IIRC Marquette won in OT and Dean "The Dream" scored 40+ for the Warriors. Austin Carr had 40+ for the Irish team that included HS All Americans Sid Catlett and Collis Jones. The varsity game was anti-climatic after the show that Meminger and Carr put on.

Yeah, people still referred to it as the Arena long after the name officialy changed to MECCA.  And I think you're right about the reason for the name change.

Actually, it wasn't "officially" the MECCA.  In fact I have ticket stubs for concerts in 1978 that say Milwaukee Arena.  No mention of MECCA whatsoever.

StateStreetMission

Interesting that the basketball floor was changed to the colorful MECCA design ("the floor that made Milwaukee famous")
in 1977 yet official events still listed the venue as the Milwaukee Arena.

Ticket stubs seem to be the only "official" reference to the Milwaukee Arena after 1974.  Newspaper articles of the day referred to it as MECCA, the UWM website describing the history of the arena has referred to the name change in that year, and if you'd gone to a basketball game from 1977 on, you would have seen them playing on this court:

Edit:  And here's a JS reference to the name change in 1974:

Well, I stand corrected, I guess.  My dad had season tickets sine Dean Meminger played.  I used to go to all the games (mom, Dad, brother and I) throughout the Al years in the 70's and then while a student - graduated in '83.  I personally don't ever recall calling it the MECCA, nor do I recall any of my buddies or fellow alumni ever referring to it a s the MECCA.  As someone mentioned earlier, it was always "the Arena" to us. Kinda like "Warriors", right?

On that I agree.  Even with the MECCA name splayed in front of us on the court, we always referred to it as "the Arena."  And when I am forced to use a nickname (I usually just refer to "Marquette" or "MU"), I will say "Warriors." ;)
