I understand why fans do it, but I usually find it to be counterproductive. Booing can make athletes tense, which is the opposite a fan wants the team he/she roots for to be.

Being a student athlete is not an easy thing. Booing is never appropriate for college sports at any level. If they play lousy stay silent.

Oh yeah.  I will boo.  That said, I'm not expecting a lot from this squad.  Not sure they deserve all the stick they are getting no matter who they lose to or when they lose, let alone boos.  Last years product, though... Booooo!

I agree that Booing is not appropriate for college athletes.

That said, the reason people boo is when a team underperforms expectations. What are your expectations for this team and what have they underperformed?  Yes UNO was a bad loss.  What could they do that make you boo against Wisconsin? Lose by 20?

I don't think there's just one argument.  I'd rarely-if ever-boo any college player (other team included) save for times when they engage in grossly unsportsmanlike conduct.

I think there's more than just one reason for not booing your own college team, perhaps the greatest of these is that they are representing (most of) us as alumni or relatives/friends of alumni. We chant "We are Marquette" at games--and it's not laughable--because the team is an extension of a community centered on specific values [insert Jesuit slogan of choice, here].  Feel free to believe that the price of admission gives someone the right to boo these current representatives of the Marquette community, but realize that this almost immediately outs you as someone who isn't truly part of it. 

I don't want to say I would never boo a Marquette player or team, but it would have to be at a point where I felt an overwhelming need to express to them/him that they were engaging in behavior that runs contrary to being part of Marquette.  That's a very high threshold, and would have to be something far worse than sucking at basketball.

I've never boo'd the players.  I've boo'd Mike Deane.  I've boo'd Bob Dukiet.  I've boo'd the tan one when he called a timeout that prevented US from getting a fast break layup.  We can boo the guys that get paid.

But we cannot boo Wojo... not yet, not this year, not til he has a chance!

Exactly and if you have any contact with them you treat them the way you would treat your own. Give them encouragement that through hard work things will get better one step at a time.

For some yes. Not for me. But I don't really cheer for any pro sports teams.

People can do whatever they want within reason at a game. If they choose to boo, they can do that.

I don't boo, but I don't tell other people not to boo. As ticket prices increase, and cost of entertainment increase, so do expectations, generally speaking. It is on one hand college kids/student athletes vs increasing costs of experience.

Unless there is a out of the box completely un-sportsman like conduct, I cannot ever see booing.  Others are free to, it isn't against the rules of attendance, but it is in poor taste in my opinion.  These are kids, and school should be the number one priority and getting a degree. We need to value these kids as people and students.  Not as entertainment for our egos.

Let's think about the environment here folks:

Weren't there only about 3000 fans there to witness the debacle?  A Saturday game, of which, I'm sure many students were getting wasted.  Those who are younger are more prone to show emotion during games.  Had there been a 3/4 full Bradley Center, the boos would have been muffled a bit by the more educated fans.  Blame it on the students who I'm sure most of, have low basketball IQ's.  They're the ones who expect the drunk fueled high of winning.  When you take away that stimulus, the horde revolts, especially after high expectations with a prominent, new, head coach. 

Of course, isn't it ironic ....... student booing student.

This I agree with. The only thing I've ever booed was an official for an egregious bad call. Bad calls are tied to Jim Burr at a statistically significant high level.

Yelling and Booing officials is part of creating a home court advantage.  I think it is fair and okay.
