Get off the ledge
« on: November 22, 2014, 03:41:19 PM »
A poor game all around.  Positives?  Duane and Derrick. On offense.  Other than that?  Not much.  Sandy is a keeper and will get stronger.  Maybe this loss will kick them in the ass for the rest of the season.  There's a lot of work to do all around, especially on D.  97 points?  F%$*!

JJJ no time in the second half.  Teve had very little impact.  JD again a no show.

For those who think a mistake was made on Wojo, get serious.  No one figured this team to be very good, especially with Luke not on the court until December 14.  Give him time to get all the players back this year and HIS players next year.  It's maybe expected from some of the newbies on this board to go off the deep end, but it surprises me about some of the vets to have that attitude.  Wojo will be fine.

Go Warriors.

A first time head coach, with a very young and very inexperienced team, is struggling early in the season? And this is the team who didn't go to the NIT and then proceeded to lose a ton of points, rebounds and minutes from last season? This is a total shocker!

Seriously, just read the thread title and breathe. This season is a building season and a season to gain experience and grow. No need for all the hyperbole or ripping on the players and coach.

Thank you.  There's no denying it was an utterly embarrassing effort but some people need to get a grip and gain some perspective.  Judge this team on the progress (or lack of) from now until the end of the season.

If our defense still looks like this come up February/March then fire away.

Exactly.

This may not be the worst game this team plays this year.  They are very inexperienced, have an inexperienced head coach, have major gaps (especially without Fischer), and will have some pretty ugly days.  I also (still) expect better, more consistent play by January, and expect us to steal a game or two we shouldn't.  My biggest concern is how this will affect our tourney seed for 2016.

On the plus side, the game looked halfway decent on my iPad on my fox sports app.

Fine, but people can't have it both ways.  Look at all the optimistic people who said the team would be improved because we had a coach who would play the right players.  Too many people here wearing blue and gold goggles.

I will not feel better until we play a top 100 team and don't give up a ton of transition baskets.  We have played two good offenses (yes, I think Omaha is a good offense, obviously horrible defensively) and each of them ran layup drills.

Lots of talk about the D. How about our 22% 3 point shooting and how about that rebounding? We have more than just a few holes besides being vertically challenged.

Not on the ledge, but with the players on the roster, there is no reason to lose that game at home.  This is a Summitt League team with one/maybe a two star players.  Wojo will work out the playing time, etc., but I am sure he and his staff are in a state of shock as we type.  This team will be chucking up threes every game and if they don't fall, trouble.

Georgia Tech, maybe Michigan State, Wisconsin and then Arizona State.  Gauntlet for them.

The poor shooting to me is different than the rebounding and defense.  There are going to be games where you just don't make shots, especially if you don't have guys that don't have a track record of being good 3 point shooters.

Defense and rebounding can come down to effort and positioning and that's where I expect (hope) to see improvement moving forward.

I thought I saw that Omaha was #2 in tempo. Will be interesting to see if that holds up. Nonetheless, every opposing coach is going to watch this tape.

I'm not on the edge bc I assumed we would stink. I didn't think lose to Omaha stink but bad nevertheless. Now I don't believe that has any bearing on our long term (beyond this season)outlook. Next year and beyond I am confident we will be fine.

Anyways teaching students from different backgrounds takes a different set of skills. You can white and still be a great teacher to inner city youth. Take Bruce pearl or Buzz for example. Bo, Wojo and others might have other qualities

Do not disagree with your comments. Just not as optimistic that Luke or more practice is going to help that much. Wojo correctly focused on D this past week and it looks like they went in reverse.

If this was said about a black coach coaching "kids from the suburbs" would you take it as racism? Don't bother answering.

This is just incredibly ignorant.  You have NO IDEA how Wojo relates to kids of varying backgrounds.  For God's sake, he was on Coach K's staff for 15 years - I imagine he recruited plenty of kids from plenty of backgrounds.

The fact our defense was abysmal today has absolutely nothing to do with where any of our players are from.

I'm certainly not expecting quick improvement, unfortunately.

Once Luke is eligible and we have a bit more size, rebounding and rim protection and Wojo has had time to get better I do expect to see some improvement.  If we are consistently allowing 55%+ FG percentage come February/March then I will have more long-term concerns.

On the bright side I don't expect to see any floor slapping anytime soon.

Wojo was pretty monotone in the postgame interview.  Typical spiel...... we need to do a better job of this and that.  No emotion at all.  Seemed exhausted.  I hope he's not in over his head, because he sure sounded like it.

No chance for .500 with this defense.  MU has more talent.... way more talent.  Omaha is a division II team for crying out loud!  This game should have been a twenty point blowout.

Thank goodness we don't have a football team. Sometimes head coaches get hired late in the cycle and they have to work with 85 players they didn't recruit for their system that might not fit. Phew!

It just sucks to be honest. It just seems like badgers have ask the momentum in the rivalry now and with them adding Stone they become a force while we have all these good 4 starplayers and can't beat the 2nd best team in Omaha.

Bull$hit. You can call this team "short, inexperienced and undermanned" but this should have been a win. There is no excuse for this loss.

Well we all knew this year was going to be bad. I had accepted it long ago.

Issue is I still had this game pegged as a win. Such a shame.

While I knew we were not a tourney team I was at least optimistic we could collect some high major wins(against bad teams). But now I highly doubt we beat either GT or ASU.

Bull$hit. You can call this team "short, inexperienced and undermanned" but this should have been a win. There is no excuse for this loss.

I understand the talent is lacking but guys just aren't putting in effort on the defensive end.  When you hear the radio analysts say "standing around"  there's a problem on the coaching end of things.

My only prediction for this year was that we'd win some we expect to lose, and lose some we expect to win.

Today did nothing to change that.

It just sucks to be honest. It just seems like badgers have ask the momentum in the rivalry now and with them adding Stone they become a force while we have all these good 4 starplayers and can't beat the 2nd best team in Omaha.

Nate, put the bong away.

Wojo's clueless on D.

Nothing more infuriating than watching inept defensive teams.

Wow. You might want to educate yourself a bit before commenting on how " clueless" he is on D.

SH IT!!!!!!!!

Fischer should help a lot, enabling STJr. to move back to his normal position. But JJJ and Deonte just don't care about defense, and that's a problem.

Cluessless?   Tell me how many times Omaha scored within 6 seconds after a Marquette bucket.  I bet 25 times.

Yeah hopefully Fischer helps. Really no one cares about D much except probably Derrick. Steve is just disappointing.

We'll see. I was really optimistic for next year at least but jeez if we keep losing games like this idk if there will be enough improvement

Only bright side is our complete lack of D means we are not getting much foul trouble lol

The problem is we've got Buzz-type players in a Wojo system.  The transition will take a couple seasons.  Wojo will get more players who can shoot from the perimeter. All things in time.

The problem was on the other side of the ball.

Wondering if Wojo doesn't have personality to teach inner city players.

Unlike others, I didn't view this as racism at all.

Agreed.  We couldn't stop their up tempo or the rare times they were in the half court.  Sad that a lot of the D simply looked lackadaisical.

Boo, just Boo.  You attack both MU and the fan base, something you position to "care about".  Please take the N'ers out (though he at least tried to back opinion with facts, not just vile).

MU will be fine, WOJO will be fine, the fan base will remain supportive, i hope you aren't raising any kids.

My first 'ignore' goes to you.

"This should have been a win." Based on what? If you think MU should never lose a game it's supposed to win you're setting yourself up for major disappointment because it happens to EVERY program.

Posted this in another thread but maybe it's better suited here.

In 2005, the triplets first year, we lost at home to Winthrop in our 2nd game of the year. We also lost to Nebraska by ten, who proceeded to go 7-9 in the big 12 and lose in the first round of the NIT. The following year we needed OT to beat Idaho State at home, then lost to North Dakota state. We all know how that season turned out.

I don't expect this team to improve to the extent that the 2005 team did, but we're a young, inexperienced team. It will get better. And if it doesn't, we still have next year.

The only reasonable measure of this team is how much they improve from now until February.
Should improve markedly considering where we are at right now.

For now, yes.

Most folks who were really able to objectively look at our roster knew this wasn't going to be a very good season. It's all about the future.

1. I'd like to think that the players who matter for our future will improve over the course of this season -- and those who don't improve will show they probably shouldn't be considered important players for 2015-16 and beyond.

2. Then enter Ellenson and the rest of the new blood.

Shame on the Marquette "fans" who are already giving up on Wojo after three games. Brent left us with a short, inexperienced and undermanned team. Lots of games left to play and this year is a work in progress for everyone, players and coaches alike.

My only prediction for this year was that we'd win some we expect to lose, and lose some we expect to win.

Today did nothing to change that.
