The more sissy #1 sits out the more Jimmy is a focal point.

Cmon man, that's not fair.  Rose isn't a sissy.  He is just worried about his future business meetings.

Jimmy has been fantastic.  Definitely playing aggressive and with a bit of an edge.

Interestingly, F is also Derrick Rose's middle initial.

Yup. So it's a good idea to be sitting out games in November. Rather have him around come playoff time. He is what he is at this point.

That wasn't even his excuse lol. He said the other day he could play right now...but its about life after basketball like his kids graduation...WTF.

He doesn't have the heart of a champion.

Luckily Jimmy does so the bulls are still alive.

So? The guy makes a personal decision about what shape he wants to be in physically in his life after basketball. Good for him for making a decision and making it public. How many players have already said they season should be shorter? Do you lambaste them too? What about when players sit out games to recover? Don't be stupid.

I'm not being stupid. You are for defending such a stupid position. And you are in the VAST minority to.

He's healthy enough to play but doesn't because of a hypothetical problem that may or may not occur in 20 years. If you can't see how that's pathetic you are a lost cause.

This isn't football. It's basketball.

Charles Barkley and Shaq had a great point the other day. Chuck mentioned how he may limp back to his mansion but he still gets to go home to a big house and a really nice car. Not bad for a kid from Leeds Alabama. Shaq for the for the first time ever agreed with Barkley which NEVER happens.

Come retirement Derrick will be just fine. Sure he may limp to his kids graduation, but he is still making 20 million a year to give him and his kid a great life. Not bad for a kid from the Englewood Chicago. Im not saying he owes it to the fans to go out and play, but he does owe it to himself and his teammates or all of the people who werent given this great opportunity.

jesmu84

That's fine, I can accept being in the minority.

If Derrick is okay with his stance and his teammates and the organization are okay with it and the franchise is still successful, what else matters? For fans, all they really care about is winning. If the Bulls won the championship with 5 Kirk Hinrichs, while Rose sat out just in case he got injured, no one would care since they were winning.

For me, I don't mind a guy putting his future first, as long as everyone else is aware of what is going on and are okay with it as well. I bet Chuck would still have that car and house in an alternate universe where he didn't have the limp since he tried to take care of himself more when he was younger.

Dang do I wish I could tell my employers that I'm worried my vision in 20 years will be worse than it is today and cause me to need glasses because I had to sit and stare at a computer screen so much at work so I'm just going to take a day off when I feel it is needed and not take any kind of pay hit for that. Must be nice.

I'm sure the Bulls' management is more than fine with this. It's becoming the norm in the NBA. The Spurs sit their stars all the time, the Heat sit Wade, it's all about the playoffs, not November.

If it results in the same kind of ultimate success the Spurs and Heat have had, the Bulls and their fans should be fine with it.

If the Bulls don't have postseason success and it turns out simply that DR was not tough enough -- meaning he was pocketing his $100 million while fans were shelling out big bucks to see a Rose-less team play regular-season games -- it no doubt will be less than fine.

It's what we call a "developing situation." Let's revisit this in May.

Wait. Hasn't he already capitalized on this great opportunity? He wrote that check already, by cashing in huge checks.

Owing it to himself? Eh. Again, he's made his money.

How many of you, if paid $17 million last year, would still be working this year? A lot will say they would, but I would wager that fewer actually would. Especially if working this year put stress on your body that is very likely to cause issues (assumed fact) down the road.

As for owing it to the teammates, you might be right. However, these dudes look at this like a business. I am sure they care, but maybe not as much as you would think.

I am not defending Rose; I am just pointing out that this is not all black and white. The reality is, as fans we place these people up on pedestals. Sometimes it is hard for us to realize they are actual people with actual real life concerns. If the guy wants to take his $17 million per year and baby up so as to save himself some grief later in life, so be it. Who am I to complain? He may not meet my herculean expectations as a fan, but really, do you think he cares?

In the end, I will conclude by stating he is a giant baby. Man up, Rose.

So if it works it was the right call, if it doesn't it was dumb? No one can predict the future with 100% certainty. It's all about giving yourself the best odds with the information at hand at the time. I think that exposing Rose to less chance for injury gives the Bulls better odds that he is healthy when it counts. Does that mean he will definitely be healthy when the playoffs start? No. But is it worth it to increase those chances? In my opinion, yes, because a healthy Rose is the only chance the team has of winning it all. And that's what it's all about.

He doesn't have the "heart of a champion"?? common.. what does that even mean? you're talking about a guy who won MVP of league.  Sadly his last two seasons were lost due to catastrophic knee injuries.  He is still a great player, let him sit out all the games he wants as long he is healthy for the playoffs.

In short, though, yes. Isn't that the way it always is in sports: success is the ultimate proof?

I don't think Sean Payton would be celebrated as a coach if the onside kick failed, would he? It was the right call because the Saints recovered and went on to win the Super Bowl. If the Colts had recovered and then rolled to victory, I'm pretty sure most would have called Payton's strategy, well, "dumb."

I can agree with the end of your post, but what ever happened to doing your job because you're getting paid to do your job, or playing a sport for the love of the sport?  If I got paid $17 million last year and had signed a contract to work the next 3 years for $17 million per year I sure as heck would still be working this year.  After this contract runs out would I?  No.  But I'm also not playing a sport for a living, so I would certainly love to sign a new contract that would pay me boatloads to keep working if my work was playing basketball.  A lot of people play because they just love the game.  I play every Monday night and some Wednesdays and by the time I am home and showered it is past 10:00 PM and I'm still wide awake, and then I have to be awake by 6:15 AM to get to work on time the next day.  That puts stress on body, and it already has as I've already had an ankle surgery as a result of a basketball injury.  Oh, and I'm not a millionaire because of my basketball playing ability.

As you said, man up, Rose.  I would never wish injury on anyone, but sometimes you just wonder if there really is bad karma going on when someone willingly chooses to sit out of a Playoff run despite being physically cleared to play months before and then gets injured shortly after he returns the next season.

All good points. My sentiment was only to say this is not a clear cut thing; it is not black and white. There are a lot of different aspects to it. For example, if the Bulls organization okays his sitting out while getting paid, then why wouldn't he take advantage if he truly believes it to be in his best interest.

PS. You should love your job as if it were basketball!!! Do what you love! I am so kidding. Teal not necessary (ever).
