I was excited about the new conference not because it was anywhere near as good as the old conference, but because I no longer was worried about looking at a basketball schedule that included Tulane, Tulsa, Houston, Central Florida and East Carolina and worrying that we could lose those teams to a better football conference.  The old arrangement was never going to last and we took a step down, but it's still a step up from where we were prior to joining the Big East.  Hate to say it but I just wish we could have kept Notre Dame.

Just to play devils advocate. Butler made it the NC game that year and some guy named Brad Stevens. Twice the BE knocked each other out. Gerogetown is well...Georgetown and VCU beat everybody in their path and the 8 vs 9 matchup us essentially a toss-up.

And the other way to spin it...the #9 team in the conference won the national title and the #11 team went to the S16.  What were other conferences' ninth and 11th place teams doing?

Even if the new Big East had a down year--it didn't--it's one year, one measley year. My lord. A lot of wasted energy in prognositicating the long-term success of a conference based on one year.
