TC's rah-rah style wouldn't work in the NBA, Murff. The players make too much money to respond to it. If you don't believe me, check out Pitino's NBA coaching resume.

Oh John Calipari or Mike Montgomery or Tim Floyd or Lon Kruger or Leonard Hamilton or Jerry Tarkanian or ...

Murffieus

ecompt----i didn't say TC would succeed in the NBA (may or may not)------i said it may be his next move. But let me add this-----as one gets older he's less "rah rah" as energy diminishes.

I'm not sure that Crean's approach wouldn't work in the NBA----as in anything else-----it would be the quality of the "rah rah" that would be decisive! You might remember George Allen with the Redskins----very "rah rah" but yet very successful!

warthogdriver

No, you said that Crean would be more successful in the NBA than in college ball. Since most of us here believe that Crean is a successful college coach we take your statement to mean he will be even more successful in the NBA.

You are just so full of crap that it's painful.

Frozen Caveman Coach

Besides Arkansas and IL, do we know for sure that Crean was either offered or the #1 candidate for any other jobs at any point during the search?  That is not to say that he made himself a candidate, just that the university put him #1 on their list.

Previous posters keep mentioning FL and UK having been possibilities for him.  There is no evidence to support this.  I don't believe there is any evidence to support Indiana or Ohio St as I have heard in the past either.  For recruiting purposes, it is annoying that his name is floated out there every spring, but also annoying is people assuming he could have just about any D1 job when available.

PuertoRicanNightmare

His name is floated because Crean floats it! Also, Crean was NOT offered the Illinois job. I have it on very good authority that after he met with them they decided to go another direction.

The idea that Crean hasn't expressed interested in other jobs is absurd. He practically hangs a "head coach" available sign outside his door every March.

whether he floats his name, or has someone do it for him (ala Rick Majerus), I agree.  few are the coaches w/ the balls to say "I'm home here, I'm staying here, please don't contact me".  (as did Bruce Pearl at Tenn last year).

See, this is hard to understand your logic.

You say that you have it on good authority that Crean wasn't offered the Illinois job. I'll take you at your word. (you could be right, I don't really know).

BUT,

Why do you find it so hard to believe people who are close to the program when they say that Crean doesn't float his own name out there, and that he is very happy at MU?

We are just supposed to take your word on the Illinois information, but you refuse to believe what anybody else says about Crean.

Why should I believe you and dismiss others?

Your logic is is often weak, misguided, and full of bias. You've already said that you dislike Crean and don't want him at MU.

The Lens

He wasn't offered b/c his demands bordered on obnoxious (he has a GREAT deal here).

He floats his name out mostly to inflate his own brand value.  It helps everyone, MU included, if TC is thought to be a candidate for UK (teams can't negative recruit on this anymore b/c he's been here 8+ seasons now).

He ain't going anywhere...but he will float that name forever.  Dude knows what he's doing when it comes to marketing.

verify that Crean was never offered the Illinois job. My source is a former NBA assistant GM.

MUDPT

I heard he was interested in the Ohio State job by two sources, one within the MU program and Jim Tressel.

This post seemed most negative.  Even the topic was a negative one, and then the bantering between the posters.  Pretty lame if you ask me.

Avenue Commons

Why do people insist on carrying on with this topic and keeping this at the top of the message board? Crean isn't going anywhere, and that's been shown by the fact that he has never left and he has no reason to leave now. Let's "kill" this issue and focus on another season of Marquette basketball!!

PS: I know by making this post I "bumped" it to the top again, but it was already up there and I wanted to add my two cents.

Exactly Avenue.  It seems some people here would rather see Marquette fail with Crean than succeed with him; just so they can say "I told you so."  It is ridiculous and obnoxious.
