Thanks for sharing. Didn't watch the whole game (maybe I will later) but from what I saw early on the game Hill has a nice stroke, is very athletic, and is lightning quick. Gonna be a fun player to watch at MU.

Markusquette

Very impressive numbers for Hill.

ecompt

who knows if Buzz will ever give him minutes?

jzpenguin

Good point - there might be another walk on next year who starts because he practices hard.

+1, but it won't shut them up.

If Jake Thomas couldn't outshoot the scholarship players, what other reason would there be to give him a jersey?

None but he can.

If Chris OTule wasn't 6'10" what reason would there be to give him a jersey. If Derrick Wilson couldn't dribble what reason would there be to give him a jersey? Etc. etc. etc.

My point was that the fact that Jake can hit threes better than anyone doesn't justify playing him if the totality of his game doesn't warrant it. Being the best inbound passer isn't necessarily enough to play; neither should being the best three point shooter.

He had one fg in the second half - you need more production than that from your 2 guard getting the bulk of the minutes.

It wouldn't matter with Buzz's limited use of frosh. Wasn't JJJ Tennessee Player of Year, and he only gets off the bench for about 6 minutes a game, which includes the 4 or 5 cupcakes we have played?

Actually it's 15 mpg.  But let's not let that in the way of a good narrative.

Directionally, however, he makes a good point.

7 minutes vs. New Mexico yesterday.  All seven minutes were in the first half, when we built a 7 point lead--which, BTW, happened to be JJJ's +/- on the game.

Yet he doesn't get in at all in the 2nd half, when New Mexico outscores us by 14.

I can see where a player would start to get in his head that he deserves more minutes.

Then you look at some of the other games (aside from cupcakes)
10 minutes vs. Wisconsin in a game with Mayo out with a suspension.  And a +4 for the game.
9 minutes against SDSU
11 minutes against GW.
Not at all against Ohio State

And he's told to be patient beucase he's a freshman, and well the best thing about freshmen is the become sophomores.  So to find some common ground, ESPN's #27 player has to be looking around at similarly ranked players to see how they're coping with thier limited minutes as well.

So he looks up the rankings ahead of him and sees #26 Anthony Barber and sees him starting for NC State averaging 28 minutes and 12 points.

He looks down to see #28 Erik Mika and sees him starting for BYU, getting 26 mpg and 14 ppg.

I'm not saying that Johnson is looking to transfer--but its not unreasonable to think he's dissatisfied with his use so far.

Superfan

The most frustrating thing has to be who he's watching on the court.

AirPunches

Johnson is way underused. Needs to be at that 25-30 min per game mark. He's one of the most talented players on the team. Also has the most potential of anyone on the team. It would be awful if he left. He has to be considering it though.

jeffreyweee

What bothers me is that Buzz even said he was the most impressive freshman by far. Let him play.

WellsstreetWanderer

Freshman is the operative word. But I am all for wanting the freshman to play. Let's see the future now

I made a similar point in another thread but you have backed it up with good stats, so your point is even stronger. Nicely done.

I would think it isn't unreasonable for JJJ to get the kind of minutes that freshman Blue and freshman Mayo received, about 20 per game each.

Otule's Glass Eye

So far JJJ is averaging a shade under 16 MPG. Vander averaged 19 MPG, on a better team. JJJ to me has shown more than Vander did his freshman year thus far, and I would also say he has more potential than anyone on this year's roster. It's not like JJJ isn't playing at all, but with my opinion that he is better than freshman Vander in consideration, I feel he should be playing more, maybe 20-25 MPG.

Jake Thomas isn't awful, but there is no way he should be taking that many minutes away from someone as talented as JJJ. Mayo also plays less, but I can understand why (the off-the-court stuff). Jake is shooting 41.5% on threes, which is pretty good. But on two point shots, Jake is an astoundingly bad 7% from the field. He has no ability to drive to the hoop, and his defense is decent at best. Mayo and JJJ are both very good drivers, and solid outside shooters. Jake should be a role player who comes in when a three is needed, not a starter.

As Equalizer said, JJJ has gotten little PT in the games against the better teams we've played. Why? I don't know. He is a freshman, and will make mistakes, but would they have made this team any worse than they currently are? Probably not.

Vander played more because he was a *much* better defender.

While I am in favor of more PT for JJJ, I disagree with any suggestion that his +/- figures are "good stats".

I agree with this and didn't take it into consideration. Is Jake Thomas really that much of a better defender than JJJ, though?

Id say no. Different styles though. Jake is more conservative obviously and doesn't get caught out of position as much as JJJ would. However, JJJ is a playmaker and has the ability to block shots and intercept passes that lead to easy baskets which jake doesn't have the ability to do.
