I think Mayo may have added more from the bench for THIS game and this game ONLY.

He was the only one early in the season who was playing offense without fear. He needed to play that role. I think taking him out forced others to step up and play that role. And forutnately, it seems like the entire team stepped up. I think we can add Mayo back in and keep the others fearless.

Mayo would have helped off the bench, but if he comes in I'm not sure Jake ever gets going and not sure Derrick forces the issue as much as he did. Yeah, I wanted the win, but that game last night could be one of those turning-point moments we look back on in a few months as the time this team started to realize just how good they could be when they played not for themselves, but for each other.

And when Jake's shot aren't falling, which will happen from time to time (which has happened from time to time), we will need someone to come in and play.

I have mixed emotions on Todd for the most part. That said, with a team with little scoring punch he is an overall positive IMO. Often I think he just does not get it and that is the frustrating part. Like him or not he is a D1 quality player.

The final play is a make (or a FT) with Todd on the floor because:
a)  JJJ wouldn't have been out there and Todd wouldn't have been lost
b)  Todd with the ball on the drive would have drawn a foul rather than throw up a weak shot
c)  If DW does drive, Todd creates more spacing

todd can be selfish however MU is a better team with him.  The man can score.  He just needs to focus more on the team system.  Imagine a 3 guard system with Derrick playing point like he did last night, Jake making 3's and Todd a threat from anywhere.  Wow, that would be dangerous.

Or how about this:

It was only one game.

If Derrick and Jake averaged a combined 30 points in the first 4 games and then had only 6 combined against ASU, we'd leap to their defense and call the bad game an aberration.

But after teaming to average 6 points in the first 4 games and then combining for 30 against ASU, we're ready to say the 30 is the norm?

Let's see them do it again.

And again.

I'm encouraged, but I'm not ready to proclaim our guard problem solved, with or without Todd Mayo.

I'm not saying it's the norm and I'm not saying those 2 are going to be big time offensive threats. But I don't think it's a coincidence that all around the offense moved the ball and spaced the floor much better without Todd in the lineup, and was this much more efficient.
