At 14. Not buying it!

You can definitely tell at that age who the better players are.  You can't tell that that is going to project four years from now.  He could "blow up" like Dekker...or he could fall off like Kyle Kelm.

Think Buzz was strong armed into scholarshipping the kid or do you think that the kid was strong armed into committing or both?
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Why would either happen?

MuMark

No chance anybody was "strong armed"....come on.... ::)

Why would either happen?

Dad who went to Marquette, "you get a scholarship there you're going! No ifs ands or nuts about it!" Or Someone (Larry or Pilarz) to Buzz, "the second that kid is in HS you scholarship him he gave a lot of money with that stipulation!" I could see the first one being true but I just think its strange with buzz sending a scholarship to such a young player and him committing 14hrs after it was reported.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Well, I guess the first could be true if the dad is a raging A-hole...but I don't think it is.

The second doesn't make much sense because I don't think Flory is some type of multi-millionaire.

Why does there have to be an angle to this?

Mike Florey obviously loves MU, and so does his kid who just happens to be a bball phenom at what 14yrs old.

Heck, I'm a 3rd generation MU alum, and my 8yr old son has told me several times he is going to Marquette.  I believe him - and no, I'm not an a-hole and I don't force him to say that.

Per Mark Millers twitter, Flory just committed to MU

With the 2017 offer, I was wondering if this would occur.  I was wondering if this is a kid (dad former MU player) who was skilled and solid with MU as a dream school.  Buzz goes and visits, kid and dad say he intends to go to MU if he gets a chance and Buzz says, why wait, we want you too, lets do this now.

Looks like a good get.  Supposedly solid already, dad knows the ins and outs of what the kid will need to do.  We lock up a top Wisconsin guy, from a part of Wisconsin that MU doesn't normally dominate.

How the hell can anybody rate somebody as top for 2017--4 yrs. away, when he has not played a game of HS ball yet?

Off the top of my head, a couple of ways are traveling team ball, ans pickup games against current high school kids.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Hopefully he takes school more seriously than dad and doesn't need a year off to redshirt to get things together...if I recall.

Do you know for certain his Dad's problem was not taking school seriously enough?  Could it have been something else--a learning disability--for example?  As for myself, I honestly don't know.

Willie and Chicos........sigh.    ::)

Yep, I am so excited about this. It is only very rarely that you can get a top recruit from grade school to commit to MU. Everybody knows how easily it is to predict who the studs will be 4 to 5 years from now.

At any rate, that is one less schollie we need to worry about filling for 2017-18.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Blackhat

Buzz seems like he's trolling Larry and Pilarz now with these traditionals.

Article from Milwaukee paper from back in the day..

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1368&dat=19871014&id=LatRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ixIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5046,3213467

I was a student at MU then....actually glad he got it turned around and I'll leave it at that. Sorry the truth bums you out dude, but that was the case back then. He played at Colorado his first year, then transferred to a junior college, then transferred to MU.  So he had some credit issues among other things if I recall.  He then got in the car accident and lucky to be alive considering the head on collision.  I remember him driving around campus, a convertible if I recall (the memory is getting hazy).

School is important, I'm glad he realized that (better late then never) and I hope those lessons are imparted.  I'm sure they are.  I'm not anti-Flory at all, I just hope son learns from dad and puts the time into the books.  Is that a bad thing to say?  I don't think so.

A lot of bad memories from that 87-88 team...Flory's academics, Pop Sims smacking around his girlfriend, Ellenson quitting, Tony Reeder ineligible due to bad grades (after his own car crash) in the second semester, Joe Nethen academically ineligible, etc, etc.  10-18 finish, first losing season in a LONG time.  What a disaster.

GGGG

Actually it's just a dick move to mention his father's academics as if they have any bearing on him.

It would be like me saying, if your child committed to MU, "geez...I hope (s)he's not an arrogant douchebag like his (her) father."

You wouldn't want your child to be saddled with your past would you?

In all fairness if Tom Crean had a kid commit I'm sure that most everybody not named chicos would say something along those lines.

I'll remember that time next time someone brings up Crean's wife, son, etc and the lack of "dick move" comments from you and others outraged.   ::)

I pretty much ignore every Crean thread....so good luck with that.

You'll forgive me then for the attacks here ad nauseum on Maymon's dad, a few on Vander's dad, etc, etc.  I don't recall the "dick move" comments, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.  And those were rather aggressive attacks.  I merely said I hope the kid takes the books more seriously than his dad.  I'm not anti-Flory, as I said, and I'm glad Flory figured it out.  That 1987-88 team might have been the most problematic in 50 years for all kinds of reasons.

Lessons learned.

or you could just say "if another poster jumped off a bridge, would you" or "he did it first"....kind of the same thing.

if buzz offered the kid, and he accepted...i'm good with it.  i know buzz doesn't know how to recruit as well as willie, but we have to take what we can get.

You're correct.  You are simply a victim of another unjust poster.

Honestly what a piece of work you are.

Hey chicos.. keep the father out of it when its an attack on his character. How would you feel if I talked about your father as a bum?

Topper,

Why not condense/merge this thread with the other Flory thread and delete Chico's posts.

Terror, I agree with you.

Chico's is begging for another time out.
