Buzz is awesome. Calling the Astros terrible was awesome.

Interesting Buzz sent the station a bunch of MU gear. Wonder if he does that to a lot of shows? He does seem to be on a fair share of segments and gets great pub. Nice to have a salesman but not as slimy as TC.

Or better at hiding it. Buzz knows how to work the system and I don't totally buy that he is as authentic of a character as he portrays himself. To me, he's crazy like a fox.

It does seem like he goes out of his way to say how selfless he is randomly. Instead of just saying it was great to represent MU at the Brewer game, he goes on a story on  about how he made them announce everyone because its not just him. I have nothing against Buzz and love him a lot more than TC. But to get a position like that you have to work hard and be self-serving.

In this rant I guess I'm saying Buzz is human and still is self-serving.

All good coaches at the college level have to be great salespeople. By definition it lends itself to a certain amount of perceived "phoniness." Each coach has to figure out what works for him or her.

Buzz has built his shtick on excessive humility, straight talk (honesty) and character (caring about the whole person). The more success he has, the harder it is to buy the humility part. The straight talk and character pieces work to convince parents and the kids he wants to come play for him.

Some coaches can simply succeed on their history i.e. "Don't worry about my character, I can get you into the NBA."
or the school they coach at i.e. North Carolina, Kansas, Duke... (Granted this is an oversimplified view.)

Buzz is starting to get a rep as someone who can get players into the NBA. He has MU's reputation as a national power growing (3 straight Sweet 16s). Maybe someday he can sell on history and school, but now he needs character and honesty and maybe still the humility.

You can condemn him (and any coach) for the approach he uses or you can say at least Buzz is trying to do it "the right way" for now and hope he sticks to it.

Buzz is sharp. He certainly isn't the rube or the "guy from the other side of the tracks" he likes to portray. He is quite cunning and knows how to play the game,  ie basketball, media and hype. He's a professional by all accounts and has garnered some great success while at Marquette.

The amazing part of his whole persona is how he gets his "kids" to buy into working hard all the time. It's no secret that his teams seem to be among the hardest working, if certainly not the most talented, around. They have their times, of course like any team but they seem to get it at season's end.

Hey, it's his profession and he's a professional. Now when does the "Buzz hates the AD and administration" and "Buzz is going to leave" talk all start again?? He certainly isn't going to the poor house here...so is it playing conditions? Family atmosphere? Being wanted? Felt appreciated? Wanting to go south? What will it be??

Remember, he's a sharp guy..............don't be fooled.

BINGO! I've said this to my buddies several times. How many times have you heard about how he came to be a coach? I have no problem with it, I love the story and it's great to see hard work pay off. But he rarely misses a chance to play the good ol' boy role.

As for TC, the guy left for Indiana! I know it's an overused joke on this board but that does mean something. Just look at the kids he's able to get, it's a no brainer. If Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, etc. came calling for Buzz he'd leave as well.

I love Buzz and hope he stays forever, but if this success continues I'm not counting on it.

Lots of wisdom here from a guy with 19 posts. Well-put.

And, I will say that while I know some of his stuff is "schtick", I still find it entertaining and interesting. His approach is unorthodox, but brilliant in a rainman kind of way.

Did anyone else Pick up On buzz's comment about the rigors of the profession?  If he leaves MU, it might be for the broadcast booth and a simpler life. I just hope he has a national championship at MU in his back pocket before he makes the switch.

Buzz strikes me as the type who will burn himself out, "retire" from coaching at a relatively young age, go the analyst/broadcasting route and be back on the sidelines burning himself out again within a few years.

Lennys Tap

Has anybody said that Buzz isn't a sharp guy or a good salesman? Some of the smartest people I know carry themselves with humility and a deep respect for the people in their profession who proceeded them and the best salesmen I know promise hard work and dedication from their end - and they tell the truth. Nothing slimy in that.

Buzz has an incredible life story, one I never tire of. He's grounded and grateful, two qualities I think are essential to a good life. He's not perfect, but only the most cynical would find him phony.

Few are fooled.  He has his schtick, but most know the deal.  As you say, he's a sharp guy and anyone who thinks he isn't is either buying into the schtick or isn't paying attention.  It works for him which is fine by me.  Whatever gets the job done.  His story (not a schtick) is attractive to many which it should be.  The old, I'm just a country bumpkin\not too smart portion is the schtick part that I believe few truly believe is the case.

Hilarious that he is going to introduce Jay at the Pabst Theater in August......and wanted to know the exact time he had to be there.

Man, there are a lot of people that believe that Buzz has a"schtick"/or playing a role. If that is true, and I certainly don't know, there isn't a lot of difference between that and Crean's phony baloney schtick? Not defending Crean, I always thought he was a huge self promoter.

Crean was and is the quintessential phony and poser, smiles and glad handing for the "rich and famous" while bullying the secretaries. Buzz is the anti-phony. Anyone who doesn't see the difference isn't looking or is a phony himself.
