The charge-block call has become too complicated, and is ruining the game far more than the shot clock. If they want to increase scoring, they need to cut down on the ability of secondary defenders to draw charges. Keep calling wipeaways, lowered shoulders, pushoffs, etc. as offensive fouls. Everything else is a block.

The game has incentivized getting in the way and falling down. That's not defense, that's blatant obstruction. Make secondary defenders actually contest shots, and things should open up.

Jay Bee

There are lies in that article.

As for the 35 vs 30 - I'm not sure it'll go through. Curious how much debate there has been had on the topic relative to what the goal is. We'd like to lower the shot clock to achieve ______, ____ and _____. We understand it may also impact ___ and ____.

Not convinced it's been well thought out.

The practice changes proposed are fine - the 5pm shouldn't be adopted with the other change, but it's not a big deal either way. I'm OK with the changes - even though Katz, some of the coaches and most national media don't understand it.
The portal is NOT closed.

Though he says he's ok with the change, I'm thinking Bo has to be one of the 9 who voted against.  But he's right on with his assessment that there's a lot more reason why scoring is down.  Looks like the NBE was represented well in the poll with Cooley, Buzz, and Stevens.

GGGG

I think Bo voted for it.  His teams now have five less seconds to defend each possession.

Sunbelt15

Wouldn't understand how any coach would disagree with more practice time unless you don't plan on winning. A shortened shot clock will allow more possession and help "the selected" be better prepared for the next level.

Yeah, Bo would not want to speed it up to the pace for Women, which is already at 30 seconds.
Maybe 25 seconds would be a better idea.

I really would like to see them cut down on the physicality of the game.  The so-called better defense of today is really that players are allowed to clutch and grab and reach when all of that stuff used to be a foul.  Fix that first, then worry about the shot clock.

The other big change that needs to happen is the block-charge call.  If the referees just called block 100% of the time they'd be right more often than they are now, and eliminating the flopping and charge drawing attempts would do more to open up the game and improve scoring than anything else.  It is far more exciting to watch balls contested at the rim than it is to watch some guy try to slide in and undercut someone going hard to the hoop.

I'd like to see some calls off of the ball for bumping cutters and try to allow players to move a little more freely without the ball. I know that will be ticky tack, but once they start calling it, teams will adjust.

Also, "over the back" rarely gets called at this level. Maybe reward defensive players more for establishing good rebounding position and prevent offensive players from just jumping up and reaching over them. I know that won't help increase scoring, but it's just something I get annoyed with.

Completely agree. They should also do away with the alternating possession rule. Bring back the jump ball.

I'm fine with 30, just don;t want to see it go much lower. The NBA shot clock forces too much isolation at the end.

Buzz is most likely still going with his comments.  Most likely, he is about to really drill dowm into the statistical impact of the shot clock change on possessions where MU generates 2+ paint touches, while going north to south, on even numbered days.  Katz is surely taking plenty of notes for a follow up piece. #lookingforwardtoit

Do not agree with the change.  Every second they take off the shot clock moves us closer to every offense looking the same.  Less diversity of offense = worse for basketball = more like the nba.

Changes I would like to see before they change the shot clock:
1.  Widen the court.    Give more room to operate on the sidelines.
2.  Crack down on defensive contact on cutters.   Which segues into #3...
3.   Call every foul.   I don't care if it means that teams shoot 40-50-60 ft's a game.   I don't care if teams finish games with 3 players on the court.    Call everything, make the coaches and players adjust.

All of these things will open up the game for more offense.

must start calling the push/hand-check that is allowed to stop forward progress of the offensive player. it has resulted in the push-off which is then called.  it now gives the defensive player an advantage.  Could also start calling the 3 second violation again.
I would like to see the 3 point shot either done away with, or, if kept, then a 5 point shot instituted at mid-court.

USA Hockey did something similar to #3 about ten years ago where the rules were changed - whereby many instances of what was once considered usual contact and stick play were now deemed a penalty - so drastically that critics argued that the penalty boxes weren't large enough and it would take years to adjust.  When the rules were implemented in the fall of that year, to the surprise of everyone (including USA Hockey), most players/teams had it figured out by New Year's.  That said, the October and November games were ugly that year.

I LOVE #1, but I doubt it'll happen. It would require major infastructure changes and cause arenas to lose seats.

But, the average player seems to be so much longer and quicker than when the game was formed. Give them an extra 4ft to operate. It wouldn't fundamentally change the game, but it could help with spacing.

What? Why do you want the 3-point shot removed and, more than that, why do you feel a 5-point shot is necessary?

Because the Hot Spots in NBA Jam were awesome, that's why.

That is my concern....I'd like to see them test it in a few conferences and see the outcomes before rolling it out en masse.

The three point shot is probably the most positive rule change to happen in basketball in the past 50 years.

augoman

3 point shot negates good defense.  The Warriors, under AL, would gain a lead then 'take the air out of the ball'.  the shot clock has done away with that potential, but it's demise is helped mightily by the 3 point shot.  Work your ass off defending and gain a small lead only to have it negated by a couple of 3's.  I don't like the style of teams that sit outside passing around the perimeter and launch a 3 at the shot clock buzzer.  If the reward is equal the higher percentage shot becomes more attractive.  Teams will penetrate more.  It'll start to look like real bball again.
the 3 is an ABA gimmick.  I assume they'll bring back the tutoned ball next.
