Are HS transfers for Hoops only a good or bad thing?

Not what I meant at all. By MUHS going against its standards, I meant that they only consider transfer after ones freshman year. Rarely do they take transfers who are not incoming sophomores, unless they are relocating from another state or some other extreme circumstance.

Like a student who just so happened to be the #1 basketball player in his class?

I don't necessarily like it, but I think it's unfair the WIAA makes a kid sit an entire year.

I think this is a fairly common rule regardless of state, Indiana does the same can someone chime in for Illinois?

The rule is there for exactly what this thread is about, moving from one school to another in the same city. Most times if the kid is not an amazing player and is changing schools because of a move or academic reason the old school will clear the kid to play right away. But if the reason is strictly basketball related it is extremely rare that the kid will be allowed to play the first year at the new school, especially if he is good.

The rule is meant to keep schools from, especially private schools, from just giving out scholarships and grabbing every good kid they can.

It really depends on the situation. Theres a similar case going on in Illinois right now. Duante Stephens is leaving Notre Dame (high school) to go to Niles North or Loyola. Hes doing it because the system they run at Notre Dame plays him in the post when in reality hes a big guard. Its good in this case because he is improving his stock by playing in a system that fits him better.
