First, best of luck to Todd in getting his academic house in order.      But the season goes on for the rest of the team.    So how do we see Todd's 25 MPG getting redistributed?
Jake Thomas, come on down.    DWilson, time to step up.    Young Mr. Ferguson, parlay some of that acrobatic athleticism into some positive contributions.       This could also open the door to playing Lockett at the 2 and letting Taylor/Juan get some time up front at the 3.      Lots of scenarios.   Heck, it could even open the door to some twin tower action.
But......no getting around it, this hurts MU's 3 pt shooting, hurts MU's depth, makes the rotation even more of an unknown.

Right on all accounts. This is a setback that becomes an opportunity for others. I think someone steps up and the team is ok. More importantly, let's hope Todd takes advantage of what is surely his last chance at MU. I remember last year when Buzz was almost in tears talking about Todd - saying that he had never been loved before and he didn't know how to deal with it. He's still struggling, but how can we as Marquette people not be pulling for him?

Skatastrophy

There's a reason we made Trent Lockett a priority.

The Equalizer

Based on four years of history, Buzz has never looked at the loss of a player as a reason to extend his rotaton.

For example, last year, with Otule out for the year and Gartner injured for 8 games, Anderson, Wilson and Jones saw no signifciant increase in average minutes.  In fact, those three players combined for 21.7 mpg on the season, and just 21.3 mpg in those 8 games.  Take away the boosted minuts against WVU, and they averaged 17.8 during that stretch when we lost Gardner.

If anything, I think we'll see a consolidation to a 7 or 8 man rotation even earlier this year.

I fully expect that we're going to see Cadougan, Blue, Lockett and Wilson average 30 or more minutes, Gardner and Otule average 20 each, and everyone else splits the remainder.    The bench will get more in blowouts and against cupcakes, and less in tight games.

GoldenZebra

Agreed, perhaps players that werent going to make the rotations as much wont see minutes, but rather the players we expect to step up will do so, big time. MU will be fine, I hope and pray for Todd to get back on track though.

Dr. Blackheart

With a year off, Jake is more BE ready than expected.  Taylor is more ready than any freshman under Buzz.  And, Juan will be a surprise. Lockett was Buzz's insurance, but MU needs a shooter-scorer to step up.  I pick Junior Blue.

Marquette will be just fine. It's up to Mayo to get a grip and decide how he wants the rest of his life to play out. Frankly, I'd be shocked if he ever laces up his Nikes for MU again.

When God closes a door, he opens a window.  And should the door turn out to be closed for good, then I hope the window is big enough for a 7-footer from Cameroon to fit through.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

madtownwarrior

agree with everything you said - MU will move on just fine - plenty of players in the rotation and I don't expect to see Mayo in a MU uniform...

If you're right, I wouldn't expect to see him on campus this semester.

How this plays out...

Too early for a Mayo to Memphis thread?

The offense is a concern.

Opportunity is there. And with it comes minutes, if successful.

Why? His brother plays for the Mavericks and he grew up in West Virginia.

Mayo to North Texas?

Probably because it was reported he almost transferred there already.

I was a huge Mayo fan and I always believed he was the one who would be really, really good this year.  So much for that.  Any kid that cannot maintain a 1.9 GPA should not be playing athletics, let alone be still admitted.  I am sure he was not taking Thermo Engineering or any courses such as.  Losing Crowder, DJO and now Mayo, my hopes for a big season just went on downward spiral, but love the underdog aspect and see who steps it up.

No Big East transfers at this point.

In the end, I think Lockett and Blue just went from 28 MPG players to 33 MPG players and Jake Thomas just went from spot action to 10-12 MPG with Taylor and Juan picking up the rest.    And next year's class had better be ready to go the minute they step on campus.

Bummer for Todd.  Would love to see him get his act together and return.  Have to admit, this a bit of a head scratcher, with Todd's comments to Hunt last month, and also knowing that MU has a department full of tutors dedicated in whole to athletes.  Hopefully Todd steps up, and learns from what could be just a minor setback in the big picture.

We have enough depth.  Two great 5's, lots of athleticism at the 3/4, Jr at the point, and Lockett/blue at the 2. Also senior leadership from CO, Lockett, and Jr.  We will be fine.

We will know in 3 days what kind of team we have.

Todd is still on campus, the injury thread has a picture of him in amu yesterday afternoon.  If he is still on campus, their is hope he starts going to class and gets it together.

Posted on this in the other thread, but I think Todd will be back for the Big East season. Maybe not the UConn game, but by the middle of January I expect to see him out there. I hope he makes it through and continues on at Marquette, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he looked at getting paid for basketball after this year, especially if he can have a Dion Waiters-type impact (12-14 ppg, 2-3 apg, 2-3 rpg) off the bench. I realize he won't be a lottery pick like Waiters was, but he could get a shot in the league, and if not definitely in the D-League or in Europe.

I'd love to see a few cubillan-type games out of Jake this year.

Todd Mayo is light years away from being an NBA player.

And that's probably understating it.

Didn't say he was there yet. Said it wouldn't surprise me if he looked at getting paid for basketball. Getting drafted isn't impossible. Getting paid in the D-League or overseas is virtually guaranteed.

How I'd like it to play out.

MILWAUKEE, WI - January 1, 2013, -- Tonight when the Marquette Warriors take the floor for their Big East opener against the UConn Huskies they'll be missing one familiar face and welcoming back another one.

The Warriors will look to defend Al McGuire Court at the Bradley Center without the familiar and quixotic presence of Head Coach Buzz Williams who is serving a one game suspension but will once again have the springy presence of Sophomore Guard Todd Mayo.

Williams said that Mayo, who sat out the first semester after being ruled academically ineligible, took stock of himself and his academics during his time away from the team.

"It speaks to Todd's character that he delivered a grade point average that many people would have thought possible. In the 100 days he was away from our team he took 12 tests, wrote 4 papers and bought apples for all his professors..." Something about 'character revealed.

Pipe dream but a fella can hope right?
