Anybody a soccer fan?
« on: July 13, 2012, 12:21:08 AM »
I hate it...so hopefully somebody can help me out.

MU men's soccer associate head coach Stan Anderson is no longer listed on the roster and Coach Bennett has hired a new assistant. Nothing on Google about Stan taking a new job. Anybody have any idea what happened?

Maybe he didn't like Larry's attempt to make him a better coach.

Something's not right with that situation, cause he was one of the top assistants in the country and a great goalie coach.  Plus they never announced it.   This admin. doesn't mind lying/spinning to us as the C-ham situation proved with him "leaving to pursue other opportunities".

It's bizarre. I actually heard some rumblings about this back in February from a local club coach, but it was never announced. Not sure why.

It has nothing to do with the admin, no need to get your knickers in a bunch. This was Louis Bennett's decision and his alone.

It does stink though seeing as Stan was an absolutely terrific person, always willing to speak with anyone in student media and promoting the team better than anyone at Marquette. He was and is a great coach.

Something b.a.d. musta gone down or Louie just burned Anderson bad.  Cause Anderson was in line to get a hc job.

Nah, that's the whole problem (from my understanding). Stan tried to get a H.C. job, failed, and Louis was none to pleased at him for it.

This makes no sense to me. He's an assistant trying to get a head job. Pretty much all assistant coaches try to become a head coach. Why would Louis be upset about it?

When the head coaching job your assistant is after is yours things can get sticky.

Not sure. Thinking it might have something to do with UWM though.

Usually universities aren't going to put out press releases saying people are fired or that they are leaving unless they are high profile.

They didn't say anything when Collins or Benford left either....but did announce Chew's hiring.

Should be interesting to see how Louie does this year.   Talk about a weird ride.   Last year progressed in league play tremendously after frankly stinking up the joint for four years.  Does the winning trend continue?   Looks like they have some offensive pieces this year, C. Nortey, etc.

Which leads to the point that you can't judge a coach until after five seasons.

Looks like you can't judge until after six years with Louie.   Got to do it twice for me before I would extend him out(don't know what kind of contract Williams gave him after his contract came up last year), to prove last year wasn't just an anomaly.  Especially after watching junk soccer for four years prior.

Well, if I'm the coach and have 4 crappy years followed by a good one I sure want to be judged on year 5 and have 1-4 forgotten/forgiven. Wouldn't work for me as a fan or the boss, though.

I'm still astonished they hired the little guy.  His teams at UWM were hacks.  Just dirty as hell.

Never understood MU soccer. It seemed like they always try making it more than it is and losing money in the process. I used to work the games and it seemed like every game I was getting paid more than what they brought in for attendance. On top of that they would use Marquette Concessions and the amount of food thrown out afterwards was crazy. The program just seemed like a complete money pit from my point of view.

I know it's a Big East program but they put much effort into games. Just set up the field and focus on the field. No need for the extras.

I graduated in '08 and there would be two graduate marketing interns and myself (or TT34) just to run the merchandise stands, throw out t-shirts and do the promotions.

There's no doubt a lot of work went into it, but I just wonder if the juice was worth the squeeze. From my experience attendance was really low. If it was cold/rainy, why would you want to be at Valley Fields? If it was hot/nice, why would you want to be next to a meat plant? Just don't get why there was so much work 8 field workers, paid concession staff, paid ticket attendants, 2 graduate interns etc. for the $500 worth of gate and food receipts.

Just kind of reminds me of Res Life hall events, it seemed like hundreds of dollars would go into an event only a few people would attend just to say they had the event.

I'm agreeing with you.

Staff outnumbered fans on rainy nights. The only people there would be Ms. robmufan so she could earn points for the trip to the Big East tournament.

The issue is that you really shouldn't half-ass division one sports - especially if you want to stay in the upper echelon of division one.  If Marquette is going to be a soccer playing member of the Big East, it needs to play in a nice facility and try their best to build the program to a top level.  The era of letting everything else fall by the wayside to focus everything on basketball is gone.

I have the complete opposite feeling you do. Soccer will never generate the publicity or the revenue. When was the last time you saw college soccer on ESPN? And if you did, wouldn't you immediately change the channel?

I understand why people would enjoy a top soccer program, but I don't think there is any way to justify the amount of money that you would have to thrown in if you think they are half-assing it right now. Those associated with the program would benefit, but 90% of the student population wouldn't. Rather have a nicer rec center than a new soccer stadium.

To justify that amount of money, I would think you would need 8K+ attending every game. I don't think Milwaukee is that kind of town.
