Bradley Center with new ticket $1 fee
« on: June 08, 2007, 10:54:32 AM »
Hmm.  So .. I wonder, does this cost the season ticket holders, or just walk-up fans?

Bradley Center imposes $1 ticket fee
Officials at the Bradley Center announced Friday morning that patrons attending sporting events will be assessed a $1 ticket fee beginning with the 2007-'08 season.

A $2 fee had already been in place for entertainment events at the Bradley Center.

Steve Costello, president and CEO of the Bradley Center, said the decision to add the $1 fee for sporting events would be used to extend the life of the building and create more fan amenities. The building opened in 1988.

The fee affects fans attending games involving the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Admirals and the Marquette Golden Eagles.

The decision to impose a ticket fee comes after more than a year of deliberation among members of the Bradley Center board. With the fee, the Bradley Center will join many other arenas and convention centers around the country that impose a similar kind of fee.

A version of a ticket fee is already in place at the Marcus Amphitheater, the Pabst Theater, Riverside Theater, U.S. Cellular Arena and the Milwaukee Theater.

Costello said the new fee could bring in anywhere from $750,000 to $1 million a year, depending on the number of games scheduled and the number of tickets sold.

In 2006, the Bradley Center drew 1.5 million patrons, not all of whom attended sporting events.

The Bradley Center operates on a fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. Earlier this year, officials released financial information for the fiscal year ending last June 30.

In that report, the Bradley Center reported a net loss in fiscal 2006 of $2.6 million, which was $1.3 million lower than the previous fiscal year. The loss includes an annual depreciation expense of $2.5 million.

The arena's plant fund - a piggyback of sorts for future property and equipment replacement — stood at $4.8 million as of last June. In the previous fiscal year, the plant fund stood at $6.1 million.

The Bradley Center also has taken on debt to pay for improvements inside the arena, including the Cambria Club, which was opened two years ago, and the Courtside Club, which opened last year.

As of last June, the Bradley Center had debt of nearly $6 million. In the current year, the Bradley Center board also borrowed an additional $3.5 million, but that is a short-term loan that officials said they planned to pay off this spring.

The new Bradley Center fee will be in addition to a convenience fee charged by Ticketmaster and a processing fee for tickets that are purchased online or by telephone.

I'm not an accountant but isn't the Bradley Center's depreciation kind of "a phoney expense" because the money to build it was primarily donated.  If you take that out (or just looked at the debt service on the 6 Mil they owe) they'd be in the black by a long shot.  This seems to me to be just another in the trend of all levels of the "entertainment business" trying to pass their expenses directly back to the ticket buyer.  They all realized that Ticketmaster got away with it so why shouldn't they.  My feeling is that the organization renting the venue (in our case The Marq Athletic Dept) should pay all the costs associated that venue rental and then charge a ticket price that allows them to cover all their costs PERIOD.
If other industries did this I could see Pick n Save telling us "The banana costs 15 cents but then there is the 3 cent transportation charge, the 2 cent banana washing fee, the 5 cent checkout clerk fee"  Where will it end.

Its a wasting of an asset. each year the value of the building decreases and often the maintenance charges increase. The other way of looking at it is that it is setting asside money to replace the building. However, governments rarely set asside money.

It might look better for the BC if they just came to some sort of agreement with the Warriors/Admirals/Bucks to raise ticket prices $1, knowing they'll kick it right back to the BC.

Plus, I'd be in favor of doing it on a sliding scale.  Maybe an $80 ticket tacks on $2.00 and a $20 ticket tacks on $0.50.  That could be cleverly surprised.

Was a good idea by the BC----who isn't going to go to an event because of the additional $1.00 ? Will make an extra $250,000-$300,000 on MU games alone----another $500,000 or so on the Bucks!

Yeah, it's a good move from a business standpoint. As a consumer who frequents the place, however, it's another example of fans getting boned in the backside by service fees and the like.

Ticketmaster is a joke with their service fees and convenience charges and shipping and now...building fees. C'mon. A single game $15 ticket for MU purchased through TM will now run you around $21 or 22 (almost 50% of the price of the ticket).

This is a problem industry wide. Monopolies are a be-atch.

Sure it's a good move for them to get $1/ticket.  What's a buck?  Nothing.

That's why we at MUScoop.com will be instituting a $1/visit fee.  Who isn't going to MUScoop because of the additional $1, right?

There's a logged-in-too-long fee, too.  We're looking into a typing tax as well as a reading surcharge.

We'll also be adding misspelled word fees and incorrect grammar penalty fees.

Further, if you have fewer than 100 posts we'll charge a low contribution fee since the site obviously grows by the contributions of its members and low-contributors should be forced to help the site in other ways.

For those with 100 or more posts, there will be a high usage fee since they are clearly absorbing more site resources than the rest of the membership is.

Finally, there will be a processing fee for any complaints received about the new fee policies.

The actual values of each fee are still being negotiated.  Have no fear, however, as the fees will likely only be a (relatively) small percentage of your annual site subscription charge.
