Hey students, worst chant ever. Especially when Gardner misses his first two free throws. Just don't cheer during Marquette free throws.

It's not all students, just a group of about 10-15 people in section 431.

I agree.  SHUT THE HELL UP when Marquette is shooting free throws.

I feel like the students yelling "sit down" to the FSU player that fouled out caused Jae to miss a free throw at the end, haha.

Pretty sure Jae wasn't here yet when we last played FSU ;)

And agreed on "automatic". Horrible chant, people in my section were yelling at them to shut up.

Whether they're meatball Bear fans or meatball Packer fans they should shut up when Ox is shooting free throws. He missed his first 2 badly while those morons chanted.

Really? This was the first time I'd heard it...  Right when Davante missed 2 straight free throws.  The stupidity of the chant makes me wonder if this has any ties to the Spanish ODs.  I did like the Scott Walker shout out though.

Didn't hear this either of those games, but it surely was embarrassing tonight. Definitely originated with some idiots in the 400 level. I tried to start boos directed at them after Davante missed his first two, but I didn't get great reception from those around me. I think if they try to do it again there will be enough hostility amongst students that it'll be stopped.

Nope, I still heard them on espn3 late in the 2nd half for DG's free throws.  Believe he made them both?

The chanting has to gotta stop... no good comes from it.  Can't imagine anyone thinks it's a good idea to chant during your own player's free throws... probably started by a few "bros" or attention wh--es and some lemmings follow along.

It definately wasnt the first time they've done this. They always sit halfway up section 431. I'm three or four sections over so I always hear them.

I believe I saw MUAhoya06 try to wave them off as well.

WTF is wrong with them?  DG's FT% is a whopping 74%.

Maybe they are chanting "Auto-Matic" and then real quiet "exceptonequarterofthetime"?

The cheering reminded me of the idiot Giants fans sitting around me at the last Packer game. Even in the first half, before the game was out of hand, they got all excited when Packers fans were cheering loudly on a Giants 3rd down and started cheering along with us. Too bad their team was smarter than their fans. :(

That whole "Left. Right. Sit down!" thing is pretty stupid anyway and needs to go. It's been played out for years and it doesn't even work because the guy who fouled out stands in the huddle and then mills around for a while. It also causes the 15% of students who are actually paying attention to the game to stop paying attention and do things like scream right as Crowder is shooting a FT.

See you all at the Seton Hall game AUTOMATIC

Awesome, bro.  Make sure to high-five the fellow bro's if Gardner makes it.  Feign disbelief to your bro-mates is he misses.  This joke will never get old.

Signed,
an actual Bears fan who doesnt use teal.

Side-note... this is what happens when we feed the bro's by giving them attention... myself being guilty of it.  You get "bro" responses from a gimmick account like the one this hipster bro just did.  The only reason I assume bro's like these even go to games is to be noticed or for attention... starting a chant in the upper level, only leads me to believe they enjoy being ironic... a classic hipster bro-tendency.

One very important lesson here... Don't feed the bro's.

/endrant

None of this would be relevant if Gardner shot 100% like NBA Jam.  When he missed those two free throws last night, I believe that was a sign maybe chanting's not a good idea.

Precisely the type of response that I expected from that group of idiots. It got to the point that we were secretly hoping DG would miss his free throws just to shut those morons up...clearly that didn't work. I guess we will have to find another means to shut them up vs Seton Hall. See you bros then.  ;)

If people aren't too busy complaining about students not showing up, apparently now they are complaining about how they cheer?
I sat right by 431 last game.  I agree- that cheer was (very) lame.  But it was also a couple dozen students having fun and enjoying the game. Who cares what they cheer?

Not everyone is going to cheer how you all want them to.  Its almost like some students/alumni on this board are on their high horse. When I was a student a couple years ago, you'd look down in 106 and the guys down front would freak out if anyone behind them started some cheer that wasn't their own. Holy crap, give it a break. The idiots in 431 have every right that you do to cheer, whether its lame, drunk, hilarious, or whatever. Even if they didn't get to the game two hours early or if they don't post on this message board.

Anyways, go MU. Let's make it 6 in a row...

agreed. my mortal nemesis was the kid who wore the warrior headdress whose jaw perpetually hangs open as if Crean were about to pour Diet Pepsi into it.  Ran into him at Real Chili after a game once, and told him everyone else in the student section hates him... he ran out bawling.

-- once we skipped class to be first in line for a game, ran to the front row of 106 before him and his boys could get there, and once they arrived, they made such a scene that only THEY could be in the front row, that we just had pity on their sad souls and went back into the third row --

This comment is so telling.  Just because you have the right to do something, does not mean that A. It is correct for you to do so or B. Free from criticism.

So yeah, do the jugheads in 431 have the right to cheer "Automatic", of course they do.  But if fans screaming during FT's aids in the chance of Davante missing 1 FT out of 1,000 then maybe they should rethink this stance on free speech.

Cincy 20-24 FTs
DePaul 22-23 FTs
ND 7-9 FTs (God that's bad...the attempts that is)
SH 20-28 FTs
Nova 25-32 FTs

It doesn't really make any sense to chant during our own team's free throw attempts.

In Chicago, fans chant MVP while Rose shoots free throws, but he has gone on record saying it motivates him and he likes it.

I don't know if De' De' would feel the same way.

This coming from the guy who thought it would be a good idea to nickname two of our players after Pokemon characters...

I admire your memory.  Also, I believe it we gave him my proposed nickname, then he would have performed better these past few games.  I realize we do not all share the same opinions, but this is how I feel.

So if Davante were named after a Pokemon, his knee would be magically healed or never injured?

Spelling/grammatical errors aside, I just do not have a response for that.  I believe if we would have called Jimmy Butler "Captain Fuzzy Pants" he would have gone #1 overall.  I understand you may feel differently, but that's just how I feel.

With the number one pick in the 2011 NBA draft, the Cleveland Cavailers select Captain Fuzzy Pants from Marquette University.

This is one of the most blatant contradictions I have ever read.  You literally gave evidence to support the chanting, then proceeded to conclude that Snorlax would not like it.

Look, Gardner (and most basketball players) have spent their whole lives shooting free throws in silence, or to put it better, not having stupid chants in the background. It absolutely is a distraction and has no positive effect.

D-Rose says it motivates him. D-Rose is the reigning MVP in the NBA. Those guys are wired differently.

I'm not saying it has a negative effect, but there's no way it does anything to help Gardner. And if I had to guess, it IS a distraction.

Better than yelling during his own team's free throw shots...

Debatable due to the BC having thousands of STH that sit down the whole game without saying a word.

1.  It's stupid.  Home fans don't chant when their home teams shoot free throws.

2.  Please act like you are older than 12 and ditch the dumbass Pokemon nickname.  My kids used to be into that stuff...and then they went to middle school.

Couldn't have put it better myself.
