Interesting comments on Crean in article about Billy Donovan
« on: April 04, 2007, 11:53:22 AM »
From today's palm beach post:

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/content/sports/epaper/2007/04/04/a1c_stoda_0404.html

The deeper and most important truth is that Donovan has made the Florida job about as good as any - yes, including the gig at Kentucky - in the country. That means that a Donovan successor isn't going to be somebody like what Donovan was when Foley hired him out of Marshall a little more than a decade ago.

Foley isn't going to hand over the keys to Florida's emerging basketball kingdom to some young gun in the mold of Billy the Kid, who was 31 when he coached his first game for the Gators.

He has raised the hoops stakes at Florida to such an astonishing level that the wish list of replacement candidates should include the likes of Marquette's Tom Crean and Memphis' John Calipari and Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Texas' Rick Barnes and Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie.

He is not saying Crean's going to Florida or is even under consideration, if Donovan leaves, just that he should be considered. Impressive list that Crean is included in.  Pretty cool that our coach gets such respect.

I like the respect too, but I sometimes wonder if it isn't simply lazy journalists regurgitating the same names that have been bantered about again and again since last week.

I could not agree more, anytime a new coaching job is discussed it's always the same list of candidates when you know certain ones would not be considered.  For once I would like to see someone go out on a limb and give an actually insightful opinion.
