Your all time favorite MU player and why? And your Top 10...
« on: March 21, 2007, 07:56:59 PM »
As much as I'd like to keep talking about who TC pays TC's salary...how about a change of pace.

Who is your favorite MU player and why?

Mine would be (shocker) Damon Key.  I was a freshman at MUHS when DK was a senior.  I can't still remember walking the halls and seeing him and Jason Allen (San Jose St) strolling along.  From my freshman perspective he looked to me like Oden does to the world now.  I was able to watch him march all the way to the state final only to be upset by DePere Abbott-Pennings.  From there he went to my favorite college team and helped rebuild a once proud program.  Mac & Robb had a ton of hype but DK was the most effective his whole 4 years.  He was a big man but his footwork was outstanding, he always knew where he was around the hoop.  And that 15fter...great stuff.  One of my favorite stat lines was from 1994 when MU played Arizona (KO vs Lute) and in a losing effort DK went off for 36 including 4 of 6 from 3pt range.  Others have garnered more fame during and after their MU careers but being able to watch Damon's HS career and then be a freshman at MU when we got to the Sweet 16 makes him #1 on my list.

My next 9:

2. Crawford (Woody was just so solid his Jr & Sr year, underrated & became a decent scorer in the NBA pre injury)
3. Lovette (Great feet, his FTs vs Cinci are still amazing, we could use a Lovette)
4. Diener (Toughest, ball-iest player ever)
5. Wardle (One of my biggest disappointments is not seeing him in a NCAA game)
6. Wade
7. Joe Chapman (Called him Joey Hustle, he showed why seniors are so valuable)
8. The Garbage Man John Cliff (more garbage time points than anyone in MU's history...his 2nd half vs Memphis will live in infamy)
9. Pieper (Went from all O in HS, to a tough Defender in college)
10. Trevor Powell (I can still remember where I was when he commited)

"I limited mine to the players I actually saw in an MU uniform ..."

1.  Butch Lee  (silky smooth, never, ever rattled--almost beat team USA by himself in the Olympics--somehow Puerto Rico was its own country for the Olympics)
2.  Wade
3.  Tony Smith
4.  Dean Memminger (my older brothers were in college and took me to a few games)
5.  Steve Novak
6.  Doc Rivers
7.  Pieper  (C-USA tourney--I think 1996--we lose in the finals to Cincy in OT--get a 4 seed in the dance)
8.  Hutchins  (he came of age in the NIT 1995)
9.  Diener
10.  Jim Chones (the whole go pro or stay in college debate way back in the day)

1. Dean "The Dream" Meminger--Our dream, their nightmare. The game was always safe in his hands. Curry Kirkpatrick of SI said he played with a Cheshire cat smile and he was right. I cried on his Senior Night.

2. Jim Chones--Big man extraordinaire. Man, Tommy should ask him if he still has eligibility left?

3. Alfred "Butch" Lee--Had a body like a fireplug, but there was nobody stronger with the ball than this DeWitt Clinton alum.

4. Maurice Lucas--Meanest SOB on the court and had the game to go along with it. Was on my bowling team in Individual and Dual Sports class. Held some pretty boy by his ankles out of an 8th floor McCormick window.

5. Maurice "Bo" Ellis--The hightest BB I.Q. I've ever seen on the court.

6. George "Brute Force" Thompson--This is the man who put Marquette on the basketball map. The current powers that be should always respect that.

7. Lloyd Walton--Lucky Lloyd would beat you with the jumper, the drive, or the dish and was quick as hell.

8. George "Sugar" Frazier--Always felt bad for Sugar having to play 6th man. He told Al he was as good as Allie, but Al said he had to be better than his son to play in front of him.

9. Tony Smith--Had the misfortune of playing on some crappy teams. Played golf with Tony once and he could hit the ball a mile, just didn't know what direction it would fly.

10. Glenn "Doc" Rivers--First saw him at Rick Majerus' camp while Doc was at Proviso East. Knew then he was going to be someone special.

11. William "Earl" Tatum--The Black Jerry West. Knew the girl that typed Earl's papers and he would get pissed off if she changed grammar, punctuation, etc.

12. D Wade--Simply the best and getting better. Represents MU as its finest. There are some who should kiss his toes each night before bed for what they have.

Those I've seen in person... (I'm only 19, so there's not a ton to pick from)

1. Wade--for 2 reasons: 1. The regional weekend in MPLS was my coolest sports moment ever. 2. Thanks to him, I could talk to friends about MU hoops, and they'd know something about it.

2 Cordell Henry-- My first favorite player once I really knew what was going on.

3. Robert Jackson-- I watched him play to improve my own post game.

4. **Empty** --I was a big Dameon Mason fan. I was convinced he was going to pull us out of that 2-year "slump" following the Final Four year. (I'm no longer quite as convinced.)

5/6. Amal McCaskill/Chris Crawford-- My introduction to Warrior basketball.

7. Steve Novak-- For his work in the 2003 tournament, for the way he stepped it up his senior year, for MU 94-UCONN 79, and for that shot against Notre Dame.

8. Jerel McNeal-- I love defense.

9. Travis Diener-- So tough.

10. Dominic James-- When he's on...WOW

Guys I saw and I'll limit it to 6 players (in no particular order):

1) Wade - Nuff said. Nobody I saw don an MU uni could compare in all around game.

2) Diener - Heart and soul of the team. Gritty and undersized, he always played the game within his abilities.

3) Aaron Hutchins - I still shake my head when I remember hearing the news that he was involved in a car accident. I sometimes think of what might have been. A small guy (like Acker) but he was an instant sparkplug.

4) Tony Miller - Not a great shooter (but when he hit a three it was HUGE!), but he was a court leader. I can still picture his baseline to baseline drive against Duke.

5) Jimmy Mac - I thought about Faisal Abraham and his underrated rebounding and on the block D, but this guy was truly the centerpiece of the early/mid 90s MU teams. His blocks ALWAYS made me smile.

6) Jared Lovette - He was kinda freak show. Didn't LOOK like a basketball player, but he sure as hell put up the numbers. I was expecting big things from him the season he had the depression or breakdown. I think he was one player I could truly say affected MU's game because of his absence. We just lacked the energy and experience down low when he didn't return.

ill keep the list to the players i have seen on the court as well.

1. Travis Diener - great guy and tough as nails on the court
2. Robert Jackson - the real reason for the Final Four run, everyone overlooks his double double against Kentucky and his post defense.
3. Dwyane Wade - who doesn't love this guy
4. Joe Chapman - no one takes more charges and always clutch
5. Cordell Henry - best handles on the ball that i have seen in a long time
6. Jerel McNeal - plays with heart, not always with head, but with tons of heart
7. Dan Fitzgerald - love how versatile he is and he hustles his but off.
8. Steve Novak - still remember the OT against Mizzou where he was perfect from the floor and the line.  Money
9. Terry Sanders - played great post D and made the most of his minutes
10. Todd Townsend - his big plays got the BC rockin - his senior year showed a lot about him and his determination

Also limit it to guys I saw a bit.

1.  Damon Key (Most underrated guy we've had since I went to MU.  Much better than McIlvaine in college)
2.  Tony Miller (Ultimate gamer.  Just wanted to win.)
3.  Michael Wilson (Flat jump shot, great athlete, great competitor)
4.  Dwyane Wade (Ungodly talented)
5.  Steve Novak (Watching him release a 3 and just KNOWING it was going in was lots of fun)
6.  Aaron Hutchins (Lots of fun to wach)
7.  Anthony Peiper (Great scorer, fun to watch)
8.  Terry Reason (Best hair ever)
9.  Sam Worthen (Think skinny, 6-5 Dominic James)
10. Don Smolinski (Hank Raymonds' victory cigar when I was at MU.  If Smo was in the game, the game was already won)

1. BlockIlvaine - the blocked shot is my favorite event in basketball.  Loved it when they'd drive, he'd swat it away, they'd get the loose ball and go up again, he'd bat it back - had to be demoralizing.  For this reason I'd have to include Faisal as well.

The only other name that I'd include in the top 10 that others haven't mentioned is Ron Curry.  A bright spot in dim times the way I remember him, silky smooth, nice hops.

Probably Aaron Hutchins - That sawed off little bastard was really a great player. Tough as a $3 steak and an absolute killer. I hated the way it ended for him.

Similar to the discussion below about the NIT game against USF. I remember vividly being in St. Louis in '97 (I think) when we won the conference tournament, beating very good teams along the way. That also ranks up there as on eof my best MU Bball memories. Hutchins performance in that tournament was freaking awesome.

Of course Wade gets a mention, as does Deiner, and I always loved Michael Wilson as well. Someone else pointed out Jarrod Lovette - another career with an unfortunate ending. He wasn't mich to look at, but was a damn good player (wouldn't have minded having him the last couple years.) Cordell Henry is another guy I always liked. He just got better and better every game he played.

1. Wade (Do I need a reason)
2. Cordell Henry (Nobody does the floater better, plus throat slash gesture vs UC in 2002)
3. Steve Novak (His Junp shot was like watching a beautifully poured Beer, it just ribboned like silk right into the glass, and you were 90 percent sure that it was good)
4. R-Jax (First, and last time I have seen a low post game at MU)
5. Joe Chapman ( Grit, toughness, an ugly shot that went in more times than not)
6. Brian Wardle (not the most polished of players, but he got the job done)
7. Travis Diener (Without him their is not game against Missouri as we would have lost to Holy Cross by like 10)
8. M-Jax (Marquettes First "Point Center")
9. Jerel McNeal (Nobody knew what he meant to the team until we got crushed by Providence, and than get crushed by MSU)
10. Brian Barone (Hit some huge shots against UC his Senior year)

These are in no particular order

I go with Tony Miller -- came in and played and was a leader for 4 years and, to me, really keyed the return of the program as the floor general for those O'Neill teams.  His performance at breaking the press vs. Kentucky was one of the best single performances in an MU uniform, IMO.  It also helps that his four years coincided with my four years there.  We've had better "scoring" point guards (Hutchins/Henry/Diener/James), but no one who played the role of a "pure" point as well as Miller.

Of course Wade.  I've been at nearly every home game for 20 years primarily because I want to root the team on to win.  But during Wade's time I just savored watching him play, seeing what he would do.  Everything else is second best and frankly its been hard to get used to.  But the rest of the list.

Diener - Sooo tough.  Really wished he could have broken the school scoring record and he would have, had he not gotten injured

Jimmy Mac - Guys just gave up driving into the lane against him

Hutchens - So Quick - Loved that little swipe at the ball and the the "I didn't touch him" look

David Boone - Best 6-6 rebounder we ever had.  Seemed to have gumby arms

Mandy Johnson - Another tough guard

Anthoney Pieper - Played against Cinc with a dislocated shoulder.  How tough is that

Novak - I could watch his shot release for ever.

Tony Smith - That guy could score

Tony Miller - Most heart of any Marquette player

1. Tony Smith...Greatest Senior year ever!
2. Dwyane Wade...Doesn't need an explanation
3. Travis Diener...Nobody had bigger B@LL$!
4. Robert Jackson...We could use a guy like him every year.
5. Jimmy Mac...Still remember how he altered almost every shot that Kentucky took in the tournament.
6. Brian Wardle...he was there when I was there.  He had a nice shot.
7. Kerry Trotter...I remember him when I was a kid.  Had a decent game against UNC.
8. David Boone...This was my older brother's favorite.
9. Steve Novak...Smoothest stroke EVER!
10. John Polonowski...Was one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet!

There is no doubt who my favorite player was to watch at MU

Travis Diener was the heart and soul of MU basketball for 4 years.  He was so much fun to watch because of his smooth shot and his intense defense.  Diener would be so emotional on the court and played with so much heart that I believe he is the stereotypical MU Basketball player

Without him we would not have made that run to the final four and lets not forget he single handedly shot down the badgers (an elite eight team that year) in his senior season at home.

If there was one player I would want back on the court it would be Diener

Mine will be limited to players I've seen in person.

Dwyane - I know it's a little cliche, but the kid was just flat out better than ever other player. From his first game in the GAS to the the victory over UK, he was dynamite. Most of my favorite memories in college have something to do with watching Dwyane.

Steve Novak - I love guys who can defend, Steve really isn't one of them. But, he could flat out stroke it and rip the heart out of any team. Nothing was quite as fun as watching him almost single-handedly put teams away (Mizzou, DePaul on the road (twice), ND, etc.). He was absolutely cold blooded. I still can't believe he missed that 3 against Bama. I don't blame him, I'm just shocked it didn't go in.

Blankson - I know he tranfered and some people hate him now, but I really loved his athletic ability and he might have had the best hands of any forward I have seen... he could grab weakside rebounds better than anybody. (the opposite of Merrit).

Harris - Didn't really touch the floor as a frosh, but you could tell when he came back as a soph he was ready to go. His guns were HUGE and he did a very good job as the "sherrif" for those MU teams. Also, I had class with him and he was a very, very nice kid.

Diener - He used to drive me nuts with his fast break 3pters, but he was the cocky kid on the playground that you always wanted to play with and never wanted to play against. He gets more out of his 6' than most guys.

Wardle - My friends and I always kind of disliked him when he was at MU because the teams weren't very good, and people treated him like he was a God. Anyways, I have to admit he was pretty good and probably the best thing MU had in 98-00.

Polo - He won the dunk contest one year, which I think is funny. I also used to drink with him at parties quite often. Some of the basketball managers used to claim that Polo was actually very talented and could have been a very good player... he just didn't care... he was just kind of a free spirit and did what he wanted.

Marcus Jackson
- Super scary looking... really friendly in person. He's a very nice kid. I love his hustle and his PG ability hahaha.

1)Jim Chones, Had he stayed in college MU would have had 2 legit chances @ the NCAA championships in 71-72, and 72-73. Ranked 2nd in country behind UCLA in 71-72.
2)Dean Meminger, had all the skills Of Dominique James, plus a brain.
3)Maurice Lucas, All around player. tough, intimidating(to friend and foe alike) great rebounder, good offensive smarts. His NBA career was more of the same.
4)George Thompson, Wonderful to watch on offense, seemed like he carried half the other team on his back going to the basket.
5)D Wade, you've all seem him, enough said
6)Earl Tatum, The D Wade of his day @ Marquette.
7)Bo Ellis, All the skills and a team leader on the floor.
8)Doc Rivers, Was Marquette when he was all Marquette had. Not an easy job!
9)Allie Mc Guire, the Rodney Dangerfield of Marquette, (doesn't get no respect!) Great floor leader, unselfish, great passer, good scorer, a complete all around player. Made the others look good.
10)Butch Lee, Great scorer, with Bo he didn't need to be the floor leader.

top ten in my experience post 1977 are:
Wade  How did we ever get this guy? Will we ever get another?
Hutch  He had so much confidence and that NIT was special
Doc Rivers  Classy guy made one of the greatest alley oop dunks I ever saw
Damon Key Undersized guy who could score
Michael Wilson a compliment to Doc. Am I the only guy that remembers him?
Novak  Keyed our first year in the big East
Pieper and Wardle a tie for my appreciation
Cordell Henry great control of offense and best small man in the lane moves
Mark Marotta and Terrell Schlundt Two "good" players but they were on my favorite team
R.Jax and McCaskill tie

There were great players before my time so I cannot include them having not seen them. The current class is great and some will be on this list next year.

I think I'll limit mine to the top five during my four years.

1. Tony Miller -- After the team went 11-18 my freshman year with Anglavar, Aamot and Logterman taking turns at the point, he was truly a godsend to the program. Classic gamer, a pass-first point guard who just kept you honest enough with his perimeter shooting. I was fortunate enough to be on press row for the Kentucky game and was just in flat-out awe of his ability to break that press EVERY single time, capped by the race upcourt, drive and dish to Key that led to a 3-point play that ultimately put away that game after nearly squandering that double-digit halftime lead. While I love the fact Cubillan is a worthy wearer of the No. 10, I would like to believe Miller warrants some discussion about getting his jersey retired one day.

Damon Key -- I remember seeing him when I was 16 at a 5-Star Camp at Robert Morris while attending Bill Raferty's first-ever Basketball Broadcasting Camp (McIlvaine was also among them as was a top recruit named Grant Hill) and just being shocked by his size, which was 6-8 about 255. And I remember seeing him in media day and needing the first row of benches to interview him. But what I liked about DK was that he always came to play, busted his ass and had that step-out ability to 17 feet.

Robb Logtermann -- This is sort of based on memories, but how he was ever able to ride out KO's incessant screaming is nothing short of miraculous. I remember one KO tirade in Memphis after Logtermann fouled someone who made a 3-pointer that lasted about four minutes, and one of my fellow MUTV people asked me if KO does that "all of the time." Great spot-up shooter and every now and then surprised you with a dribble-drive.

Amal McCaskill -- I will forever hold a spot in my Top 5 for any D-1 player who was willing to pass me the ball in a pick-up game at the Rec Center.

Roney Eford -- Maybe it was a New York thing, maybe the goofy smile he always had on the court, maybe it was the fact he looked like he was a 27-year-old out there, but nothing ever bothered him when he played. I also think part of it was he made KO nuts at times, but in a good way.

Limited to players I saw play:

1.  Earl Tatum (McGuire nicknamed him the black Jerry West)
2.  Lloyd Walton (behind the back dribble and score after length of court fast beak drive in 1974 NCAA championship game)
3.  Doc Rivers (25-foot last second shot to beat top-ten ranked ND in last game of season)
4.  Maurice Lucas (tough, bruising inside player, beat UW on last second jumper in 1973-74 season)
5.  Butch Lee (tough guard who could take it to the rim)
6.  Aaron Hutchins (all heart, never quit, almost single-handedly beat Cincy in conference tournament championship)
7.  D-Wade (for obvious reasons)
8.  Sudden Sam Worthen (great passer)
9.  Tony Smith (smooth as silk)
10.  Michael Wilson (great team leader)

1. Wade (obvious reasons - first being I saw his coming out party FIRST-hand in Alaska...)
2. Mike Bargen (was there '95 - '99 just like me and the guy did EVERYTHING - score, rebound, block shots, assists)
3. Travis Diener (toughest little man I've ever seen.  what a Warrior!)
4. Anthony Pieper (I still remember the plane ride home after the Providence game and seeing his beat up face...)
5. Steve Novak (SWEET stroke - wonder how much he'd charge to teach my two girls??)
6. Aaron Hutchins (would have been higher in my list if he hadn't f*&^d up his life and NBA chances)
7. Wardle (I remember watching my TV in Campus Town when he hit the three at Louisville...wow)
8. Jimmy Mac
9. Chris Crawford (looked very unathletic - until he dunked on you!)
10. Wes Matthews (Smooth, smooth, smooth - will be the best of the Three Amigos - mark my words)

Blankson - I know he tranfered and some people hate him now,.

First off, I don't think I've ever seen anybody say they hate him--I think its fair to say most thought he was making a huge mistake--but the universal sentiment was to wish him well.  At worst, there was probably some small pleasure that his team never reached the level of success that he would have seen had he stayed at MU--that's not hate, just human nature.

1.  Jim McIlvaine.  Started out on a path to the record for most concussions, but turned into a pretty good player, has represented the school well over the years, and does a great job on the radio.

2.  Wade--for all the reasons others have cited.

3.  Travis Diener--loved his enthusiasm and on-floor leadership. Would love to see him on the bench after his NBA days are over.

4.  Roney Eford.  Seemed to be the guy who could stand up to O'Neill without being thrown in the doghouse.  Loved his fearless play

5.  Allie McGuire.  As a kid, I thought he was only in there because he was the coaches son, but over the years realized that he was a good player in his own right.

6.  Sam Worthen.

7.  Michael Wilson--as far as I know still holds the MU record for smashed backboards in a game, season, and career.

8.  Walter Downing--any guy who could turn his back on DePaul is okay by me.  Always seemed like a legitimate nice guy, not caught up in being a big-time basketball player.

9.  Doc Rivers.  Had he done nothing more than hit that half-court shot against ND he'd be on the list.

10.  David Boone.  Held the team together during the begininng of the fall.

. Dean the Dream ( I used to put his tapes on in the language lab. Incredibly fast)
2. George Thompson ( Probably the best all round player)
3. Maurice Lucas (the enforcer, a mean rebounder and personally a gentleman)
4. Jim Chones (loved his rebounding)
5. Ric Cobb (ditto)
6. Jerome Whitehead (ditto)
7. Allie McGuire (never got enough credit for what he did at the point)
8. Gary Brell (crazy man got points for not saluting during Vietnam)
9. Doc Rivers (greased lightning- loved to see him run on the break)
10. Wade (I wish he had stayed. Imagine the team with Wade and Diener)

Players I've seen (back to '94)

1. Robert Jackson (automatic if he had the ball w/in 5 feet, most unheralded player from the FF team)
2. Dwayne Wade (remember watching the Great Alaska Shootout and thinking HOLY $H!!!!!!!!!!+!  Then he outperformed expectations)
3. Jerel McNeal (makes us look like we have 6 defensive players on the floor)
4. Jim McIllvaine (Don't even think about driving.  More than twice the career blocks of any other MU player)
5. Travis Diener (would pick a fight with Kimbo Slice)
6. Lazar Hayward (wait for it...wait for it...   Has the making of a star)
7. Brian Wardle (all 16 first half points against Cinci my freshman year.  Would have liked to see him on better teams)
8. Steve Novak (kinda the same reason I could watch Tiger Woods on the practice range for 4 hours without blinking)
9. Cordell Henry (Loved that floater)
10. David Cubillan (the most annoying player I've even seen; drives me nuts; what a pompous, arrogant, son of a; he should be kicked off the court.  Oh wait, he's on our team, never mind then)

In no particular order, and for a variety of reason, these are my favorite MU players that I personally saw play and/or knew while at MU:

Dwaine Streetor
Cordell Henry
Anthony Pieper
Chris Crawford
Dwyane Wade
Travis Diener
Steve Novak
Jim McIlvaine
Brian Wardle
Aaron Hutchins
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If forgot to mention the great John Glaser, even if I never saw him play. No one could rebound AND use exclamation points like JG.

Damon Key - This is the easiest choice, by far my al-time favorite.

Doc Rivers - The last second shot vs ND .... Awesome

Maurice Lucas - Dominating

Butch - Could carry the team and made everyone better, loved it when he almost beat the US National Team single handedly with Puerto Rico

Bo Ellis - Classy, and contributed to the program longer than any other player...Coaching and Playing

Rick Majerus - One of my favorite all around commentators

Dwayne - Put us back on the map

DJ, Jerel, and Wesley - Keeping us on the map

Based on the players I actually saw play...

1. Wade - Nobody can even come close to him for me...gave me the most fun year of my life.
2. Robert Jackson - Like people have said...most underrated part of the Final Four run.
3. Hutchins - Loved how he played.
4. Wardle - Cash.
5. Nnamaka (spelling I'm sure is wrong) - Not sure why I loved him but I just remember being a huge fan of his.
6. Lazar - So efficient, love how he plays and by his senior year he'll be a stud.
7. Henry - Loved the jersey tug after making a 3 pointer.
8. Pieper - Also cash.
9. Novak - Well, a little more than cash.
10. Christopherson - Great kid, hopefully can have the cash description soon.
Honorable Mention: Ooze - Just love the cheer and loved the energy when he jumped on Burke's head after he made the 2 free-throws when they intentionally fouled him in the UW game.

Favorite transfers: Mason, Blankson, and Karon Bradley

My list (beginning with 79-80 season, my freshman year).  No current guys as I'll wait until they finish their careers to include them (but McNeal, for certain, will make it)

1.  Damon Key - Overshadowed by McIlvaine for some reason but was the much better college player
2.  Tony Miller - Tremendous competitor, small, couldn't shoot, but smartest player I have seen at MU
3.  Michael Wilson - Forgotten guard from the early 80s, but could really play.  Tough as nails
4.  Dwyane Wade - What can be said that hasn't already?
5.  Steve Novak - Loved to watch him shoot
6.  Aaron Hutchins - Fun guy to watch
7.  Mandy Johnson - Unassuming glue guy for Hank Raymonds (I love unassuming glue guys)
8.  Anthony Peiper - Dynamic offensive player
9.  Doc Rivers - An exact contemporary of mine at MU.  A tremendously gifted athletic player.  You'd never know it if you watched him in the pros because his legs went early, but this guy could jump out of the gym.  He made the single greatest play I have ever seen on a basketball court against Louisville when he took a horrible alley-oop pass that had to be at least 5 feet wide of the basket and 11 1/2 feet off the ground and somehow one-hand tomahawk dunked it.  Strangest reaction to a play I have ever seen.  Stunned silence followed by an eruption of screaming and yelling that lasted two full minutes while play continued.  Would be higher but had a peculiar habit of collapsing to the floor and feigning injury whenever he made a really dumb play.  (It was actually kind of amusing, you could count on it)
10.  Brian Wardle - Warrior
Honorable mentions (Group A) -  Sam Worthen, Artie Green, Oliver Lee, Terry Reasons, Kerry Trotter, Walter Downing - Colorful characters with various skill levels that helped make following MU fun and exciting.
Honorable mentions (Group B) - Robb Logterman, Ron Eford, Robert Byrd, Ron Curry, Trevor Powell, Amal McCaskill - unsung guys who get lost in time but who were good players who were overshadowed for various reasons during their careers.

Apologies to Tony Smith, who played in an era when I lived on the East Coast and MU was NEVER on TV, so I only saw him play a few times.

I just noticed I did this back in MArch, my list didn't change that much since then, so that is good!

Apparantly from what I hear, Kerry Trotter was considered some sort of god in Belgium where he averaged over 30 pts a game over 10 seasons. But again this is just something I've heard from a friend. But i could see it.

How can anyone leave Lloyd Walton off their list?  What about Sam Worthen,  Michael Wilson or even Terry Reason?

Speaking of ages, I find it interesting that very few lists include any of our three junior guards -- who have been marketed harder than any group in MU history.

going with players I've seen:

The top tier are pretty close, hard to separate,

1.  Diener - never quit, tough as nails.
2.  Novak - great senior season, awesome shot
3.  Wade - would have been higher, but didn't stay as long as Diener & Novak so I didn't quite have the
same level as attachment.  More natural ability than the other two, so I appreciate the others a little more for their accomplishments.

The rest:

4.  McNeal - heart of the current team
5. James - when he plays to his strengths, unstoppable
6.  Wes - team player
7.  Wardle - He was all we had when I was in school, plus his soccer girlfriend was hot
8.  Hutch - smooth
9.  RJax - without him no Final 4
10. Townsend - class act, another team player

I thought the same thing. The vast majority of these players are from the 90's or 00's. I'd love to get Murf's thoughts on this and some of the other old guys as well.

Okay, older guy here.  My dad is an alum, so our family had season tickets beginning in 1970 or 71.  I was on my 6th grade team so I was BIG TIME into hoops and this was the dawn of the greatest decade of Warrior hoops (remember only the great John Wooden's UCLA teams had a higher winning percentage in the 70').
I'm just going to throw the names out there in no particular order, but many ofthem have been mentioned already.

Butch Lee- I loved this guy - I'd have to say without verifying it, that he may be the only MU palyer to garner player of the year honors.

Maurice Lucas - the guy was dominating - was the second (or maybe thrid MU player to go hardship - which is what they called it when you left early for the pros).  Murf, maybe you can help me out here - did Luke go pro before Larry McNeill?

Dean Meminger - he was Pete Maravich before there was a Maravich - the guy had a handle that was unbelievable for the era.

Jim Chones - the first "hardship" case.  I remember how devastating it was for me as a kid to find out that he would not be coming back to MU his senior season.

Bob Lackey, another bruiser - the black swan (probably not politically correct to say that today) man MU used to have some talented bigs.

Lloyd Walton - great point guard with superior court sense.

Earl Tatum - he could fill it up.  Scored 20 plus per game on a regular basis - picked up the scoring when Butch left.

Jerome Whitehead - the quiet, solid big man - RJax reminded me of him.  I will never forget the length of the court in bounds pass from Butch Lee to J Whitehead vs. UNC-Charlotte in the Semi-finals of the 1977 championship season.

D Wade - so exciting, love the fact that he has singlehandedly put MU in the national spotlight.  I know some may argue that point, but I live in Atlanta, and if you mention Marquette to a casual sport fan - those not old enough to remember the Al era) and their first response is - that's where Wade went right?

Diener - again, if you saw the kid on the street and someone told you he was a baller- you wouldn't believe it.  But you'd be so wrong.

Doc Rivers - came to MU my sophomore year - great, great guy - got his autograph in Grebe's Bakery one day for my little brother.  The nearly half court shot to beat ND on the first game back after Christmas break set off a non-stop party like I hadn't seen since the championship3 years before.

Sam Worthen - one ugly man, but one of the first to shave his head and shine it up (like Slick Watts who won an NBA championship with Jack Sikma and the Sonics in the late 70's).  I considered him the "new era" of point guards.  Had the no look, effortless passes that were spot on.  Just had a whole different style than the point guards that came before (Allie McGuire, Marcus Washington, Lloyd Walton, Jim Boylan)

I know there are more, but chew on that for a while.

McNeill left one year before Maurice. Larry was drafted by the Kansas City Kings and Lucas by the Bulls and St. Louis Spirits of the ABA. Opted for the Spirits and later joined the Blazers.

Was McNeill a hardship case?

I also realized I goofed on Tatum - he left before the Championship year.  As a matter of fact, we had some t-shirts made up that we were national champs in '76 because we were so confident that we were going to beat the undefeated Indiana Hoosiers in the tourney.  Unfortunately we lost to Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May.  The we lost Tatum to the draft and went all the way the next year.

1. George Thompson. I was 13 and my brother was 9 and my father would take us to the freshman game to watch Thompson, which was much better than watching the varsity play. My brother and I have always had the brotherly rivalry thing going. I was a Tom Flynn fan and he was a Bob Wolf fan. I was a George Thompson fan he was a Deam Meminger fan, I am a Marquette fan and he is a Wisconsin fan. I have not heard from him since I e-mailed him that I knew Marquette was quick, but I did not realize UW was so slow.
2. Jim Chones
3. Lloyd Walton
4. Wade (only here because 13 year olds are much more enamored about stars than people over 50)
5. Ellis
6.  MacIllvanie for his shot blocking ability
7. Diener I loved his toughness and attitude
8. Worthen(passing ability)
9. Lucas - he would be the past player I would add to this team to make it an NCAA champion
10. Meminger only this low because he is my brother's favorite.

McNeill went hardship.

So MU's all hardship (early NBA draft entry) team would look something like this:

Jim Chones
Maurice Lucas
Larry McNeill
Doc Rivers
D Wade

Pretty strong!

I believe Maravich and Meminger were the same year, so Meminger was not Pete Maravich before there was a Maravich. I saw Maravich play three times. he played in the Milwaukee Classic when he was a sophomore and scored 43 in both games. I was at the NIT semi-final game at Madison Square Garden when we held him to 23 points his senior year.

Bilsu, what was it like being at MU when they turned down the NCAA?

I can only imagine the craziness if that happened today.  ESPN.com would meltdown.

Where did Michael Wilson break the backboard?  I have vague memories of that game (@Stetson?), didn't it take something like 30 or 45 minuted to replace the backboard.

I'm pretty sure it was at Memphis State during a loss to the Keith Lee led Tigers.

1. Wade -- ubertalent and a class act
2. Butch -- unflappable leader
3. Diener -- scrappy little guy
4. Doc -- the ND game-winner
5. Bo -- lead the 77 team along with Butch
6. Novak -- sweet stroke
7. Worthen -- the last great from the 70s
8. Tony Miller -- field general
9. Wardle -- maximized his talent
10. Nethen -- can't spell neanderthal without "nethen"

How about top 10 most frustrating players?
