Interesting.  Eight of the top 30 are Big East schools.

Kentucky with three top 10 recruits who are probably one and done as in previous Kentucky classes, but still impressive.

brewcity77

Interesting how they come out with these before the Spring Signing Period closes, and with two of their top 100 unsigned. Disappointed we aren't on there, but my guess is this recruiting class will be remembered very fondly.

MuMark

Juan was 61 in Rivals final ranking. Mayo just missed the top 150 according to Bossi.

Hmmmmm.... at least 8 BEast schools ahead of us. Are we keeping up with the Joneses?

We'll know in 4 years whether it was underrated.  The one thing I've never seen is a recruiting analyst ranking teams on filling current needs.

With Dwight Buycks graduating, Reggie Smith transferring and Darius Johnson-Odom entering his senior year, Buzz needed to address guard depth and we'll have to see how Derrick Wilson backs up Junior this year.  Derrick seems to be a solid player on and off the floor at this point and may be as good or better as a point guard option than Reggie Smith was.  Todd Mayo might be one of the more underrated players nationally right now, in my opinion.  If you watched any Notre Dame Prep video, you'll see that he was probably the most advanced player offensively on that team and that included McDonald's All-American Khem Birch, top 10 2012 player Ricardo Ledo and a few other D1 recruits.  Hard to tell how he'll do defensively, but there's a chance that Mayo could line with up with DJO and play a combo role at times as a freshman.

Juan Anderson needs to add some strength, but I think he could give MU some time similar to what an injured Joe Fulce gave last year and as he develops physically, he will be a good one.

Nobody includes D1 transfers in these rankings and Jamil Wilson will be the key newcomer this year.  I'm going to guess he's close or just a shade below 6-8 now and may be in the 220 range.  If his focus on the task at hand has developed in the past year to match his growth physically, he will be a very interesting player to watch and MU will be a very good team. Can he put a big dent in helping replace Jimmy Butler's production?

willie, for your sake, I hope Marquette never wins a national title and gets a #1-rated recruiting class in the same year. If you didn't have anything to complain about, I imagine you'd probably just up and die.

Says the poster who did nothing but ask for more playing time for Gardner...you know the same guy that hurt our recruiting ranking.  I would say with a Sweet 16 finish we did keep up with the Joneses.

HoopsMalone

It's possible J Wilson will be one of our top 3 players so our new guys are underrated by that list.

Stretchdeltsig

I agree with Ted.  When you add 6'8" Jamil Wilson in with Mayo, Anderson and Derrick Wilson MU looks solid next year!  The high talent level will continue.  Still curious to see if Buzz can sign a good "big" though.

While Calipari must be doing something right (or wrong) to get the elite talent to come play for him, I don't know if I'd trade our 4-year players for one-and-dones year after year.

EDIT: Thinking about it more I guess I don't know exactly how I'd feel if we were in that position.  I'm guessing I'd be thrilled if we had a John Wall type player come here even for a year.  Either way, I still love our guys.

willie warrior

Rivals just released their Top 30 teams, with 6 BEast teams. We were not one of them. Hmmm... we did not make Scout's either, where the BEast had 8 teams.

Tivals did have Juan Anderson at #61, which is pretty good. Nobody else from MU was in their top 150.

As someone who does prep rankings of individual players in Wisconsin for a living, I can say truthfully that these things really don't matter all that much.

The rankings are fun for fans to debate and they do give at least some insight into what a player can and cannot do, but none of it matters until the players show up on campus and get hit upside the head with the reality of how hard you have to compete each and every day just to survive at the DI level.

Not really.  Most other Big East teams have three or four willie warriors trolling their boards.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Can you hit us up with a critique of Kevon Looney?

Looney has a great upside. Diener loves him. Skilled, intelligent and versatile. Class kid on and off the court. An honor student at Hamilton. I would say he projects to a wing forward position in college. Can create off the dribble, can shoot it and can pass it. He's going to be really, really good. No. 1 class of 2014 prospect in Wisconsin and it's not close.

In regard to what Mark said.  Juan was not rated at all a year ago, so to end up at about 60-70 that is pretty solid.  Mayo was overrated a few years ago becuse he was OJ's brother.  He was a top 100 for 2010 at points when he was a Jr.  But it took a little time to turn his natural talent into a good all around player. So he was a borderline top 100 2 years ago and killed it this year but they would not put him back in.  derrick Wilson I think all would agree his best talent is he is a winner, but that does not translate to highlight films.  Plus he is not great at any one thing.  He is guy that could play from day one but maybe never be a starter.  My predictions are Juan will make the guys look wrong, just like lazar going from a 60-70 to a guy that plays in the league.  TM, if he is willing to work harder then he has ever worked before will be a double digit scorer by year 2.  DW will make everyone wonder why he was not rated higher, because all he will do is not make mistakes and help the team win.

Couldn't agree more. Bet he he grows to 6'8" or taller. Needs to get stronger and quicker. He's only 15 years old.

2012 through 2014 is where it looks good.  This year is just a couple of traditional players in Zeller (will be very good eventually) and Etherington (tall traditional that can shoot from distance).  The recent commit for 2011 (Abell) quit on Bradley recently.  Nothing too exciting though.

Their 2012 class is impressive:
Peter Jurkin is a 7-footer.  Not great, but tall and a good name.
Ferrell - Sometimes he looks very good.. but he's a little guy.. well under 6 feet.. point guard... I don't think he'll be that amazing on day 1, although many think of him as a '5-star' kid.  Not I.
Patterson is good, not great.   Could turn into a very good player.  Settles a lot, although he's not close to an elite shooter.  Can do multiple things though.. solid overall, not great.  Could be pretty good, but I'm not sold.
Hollowell... good size at about 6'6".. I was about 15 feet away from him when he busted open his chin (actually it wasn't THAT bad.. just a little gash) and hurt his wrist at a tourney.. that was ugly.. sometimes doesn't do a lot.. then all of a sudden he'll come on and it can get amazing.  Can get to the hole and can also knock it down from deep.  First couple of times I saw him in person I was unimpressed.. he just wasn't doing jack and missing some shots, looked a little disinterested.. but since those first couple of times, I've seen him do some amazing things.  If he puts it all together, look out.
Hanner Perea... I'm sold.  He's a man.  He'll continue to get better at rebounding and the offense will come around.. but, he's already a specimen... mean dude out on the court, physical, athletic, can erase shots.. looking forward to Dawson and him going up for the same ball off the glass in Big Ten play.

btw... Eron Harris (2012) who has run with these kids for Indiana Elite is a nice looking player.  If he winds up at a mid major, he may be the man on a team.  Not a strong frame, but long and athletic.  Drills open deep balls with ease and can attack to the rim or pull up for the j.  Active on defense... looks close to 6'4" to me.. fairly versatile.  I wonder if a bigger school doesn't eventually snatch him up... so far it's just been mid-majors I think.. but I like the kid a lot (more than any of those I4 jagoffs).

Not this year, though not bad.  The next two years are both top 10 classes based on the verbal commitments they have received.
